digital camera?

so.. I’m looking to buy a digital camera. My first one (:O!)
And I have NO clue where to start, what to look for.. I am no professional photographer, I just want the pictures to look OK, just as they do with a normal camera.
What do I have to be careful with? Batteries? Display? Card? Is one of 256MB enough for a week holidays? (I don’t take that many pictures.. 2-3 24x films..)
Price shouldn’t be more than 200-250 Euro.
thanks :)

I have a Canon.
And if you don’t take many pictures, a 256 should be good for the week.

I got the Olympus C-765 Zoom. 10x optical zoom! Quite nice and not too expensive. I recommend this really.
There are some cameras who feature a display that you can move and turn - good thing for concerts. :)

The Nikon Coolpix 5900 is good for a beginner. This is what you should keep in mind:
At least 4 Mpixels
At least 3x zoom (digital zoom is not at all important)
At least 256 MB memory card (rather 512)
Rechargable batteries
That should get you good to great normal 10x15cm, or 11x15 cm, pix.

Judith, here’s hoping I can help!
The camera I currently have my second digital is this one Nikon 5600

If that link is too big... copy and paste! It’s a great camera for a starter and mine is only about 8 months only and cost me nearly double the price!
I started with a Kodak, my first modal is not availible now to buy but had 3.1 Million Pixels, it tooks great pictures!
This is another Kodak the next modal up availible now in most high streets...

Good Luck, you’ll be shooting pictures soon! and 256mb would be more than enough for an average holiday! The higher the pixels the less pictures you would fit on a memory card.

Santi is absolutely right. Forget digital Zoom and pay attention to Optical Zoom.

The two winners in more or less all tests for compact digital cameras are Panasonic and Canon. The Canon always tend to get a few more marks due to its ease of use. So if I would buy a digital one it would most certainly be a Canon. In addition the Canon also have a metal cover, which at least is a plus to me.
My father (who have had photography as a hobby the passed 40 years) owns a Canon which he is really pleased with. He tried brands like Sony and Olympus before he bought his and he was really not pleased with the picture quality they performed. So unless they got very much better in the passed year I would not recommend those to anyone.

Well I have been using a Kodak for over 2 years and have had no problems with it.... it’s been a great starting camera!

Just stay away from anything with digital zooms. Digital zooms are unimportant, they’re only there for marketing and if you want a quality picture you will never use it, because they square it showing all the pixels bigger. That sucks.
You want a decent optical zoom, don’t pay any attention to the digital one :)
