Why is Soul Deep included on the 'Joyride' album?
Tempest said on June 23, 2005 19:04:
The song ”Soul Deep” is on both ”Pearls of Passion’ from 1986 and ”Joyride” from 1991...
Why did they include this 5 year old song on the ”Joyride” album? Any particular reason?
Roxette-atic said on June 23, 2005 21:39:
Ive also been thinking about that, why wasent “It Must Have Been Love” included on the “Joyride” album? Maybe it would have sold even more if it was??

I reckon IMHBL probably would sound like the odd one out, compared to the rest of the album. It doesn’t have that “Joyride feel”, in my opinion. Doesn’t make it a bad song though. ;)

Love the album version, never liked it live.. was too long winded for me!
Santi said on June 24, 2005 06:20:
If I’m not mistaken there is one more guitar in Joyride’s soul deep. I think they put it, as it has been said, because when touring in Sweden with Pearls of PAssion and Look Sharp that was one of the main moments of the concerts, but the international audience would not know it since Pearls of Passion had not been released worldwide, so to keep it the put it again in the following record.

“Soul Deep”- Joyride version is more rocky than the Perarls Of Passion-version. And Maries vocals I think are better on the Joyride-version!

IMHBL, most likely have been already contracted for pretty women movie and soundtrack you see at the time of joyride album they wouldnt have sold as many pretty women sound tracks in the song was aval on joyride aswell , maybe that what the deal that it should not be included on the joyride album., only the soundtrack .

IMHBL doesn’t fit Joyride IMO.
Vocals and the most part of the instruments on Soul Deep are the same as were recorded for PoP, they only added more guitars.
MiracleMan said on June 25, 2005 18:43:
I don’t think the vocals are the same at all—the melody sure, but there’s more energy on Joyride, more vacalise at the end. I chalk it up to the fact that after performing a song live for so long makes a richer, more comfortable version.
Is there anyone who likes the Pearls version better?
girl7twenty7 said on June 26, 2005 14:21:
Nah, the vocals were definetely recorded for PoP (see the Joyride booklet), the ending is slightly different, but listen to the Dance Passion remix, Marie sings exactly the same in the end.
Santi said on June 26, 2005 14:43:
If you listen to the complete record of Joyride you will probably notice that Marie sounds different in Soul Deep, she sounds fresher, louder, younger (If you listen to her solo work, you’ll see she also yells more in her first records... let alone MaMas Barn or Strul...).
That is why I said that think that everything is the same but some added guitars. The “slightly different” vocals could perfectly be an out-take for the Pearls of Passion recordings.
Roxette-atic said on June 26, 2005 16:29:
I dont know if I agree with you on that one santi..I think Marie sounds pretty fresh and loud on the other Joyride-songs too.. ( “Hotblooded”, “I Remember You”..etc etc..)

joyride was supposed to be roxette sgt pepper...i don’t hear any song liek it must have been love on the sgt pepper album so no it doesn’t belong on joyride

Oh i love the Live Version of “Soul Deep”. Marie has so much energy. I love Jonas playing the guitar. WOWOW!

The best Soul Deep version is from the b-side of Church of Your Heart. It’s Chris(?) Lord-Alge’s remix.
MiracleMan said on June 27, 2005 17:32:
So, after listening to both versions simultaneously on the computer this morning—It was an interesting experiment—yes, the vocals are the same (at least at the beginning, but I’ve never heard the Dance Passions mix. . .), except there seems to be an echoi on the POP that is’t there on Joyride. The guitars are different, the drums are definitely different (that 1-2-123 beat isn’t POP’s steady one beat rhythm), and the tempo seems to get quicker at the end of the Joyride version. No matter how they sync up, the reeeeeeeaaaaaaaly get away from one another at the end. It sounded like an odd mess by the time they finished.
Roxrikkie said on June 27, 2005 21:36:
I agree. Tom Lord-Alge’s remix is the best version of Soul Deep. The saxophone is great.
Staffany said on June 28, 2005 05:45:
I prefer the original version on Pearls of Passion. Dance Passion and Tom Lord-Alge mix are awful...
Santi said on June 28, 2005 16:01:
@MM: Are you sure you’re not getting messed up with the also added tambourine which makes the rhythm sound more complete?
About the voice of Marie, it’s true that it’s speeded up in Joyride. That is the primary reason why it sounds so “bright and younger”, apart from the fact that it was also recorded 4 years before the others tracks in Joyride.
ChrisWilliams said on June 29, 2005 12:14:
My only reason for wondering why they didn’t put IMHBL on the Joyride album was purely a financial one: They could have earnt a lot of money (and record sales, which equals more popularity) from having that song in there.
As for it not fitting into the album, at first glance I’d have said no. But tracks like Spending My Time follow a similar format, while (Do You Get) Excited? is, pretty much, a copy of IMHBL with a few more guitars thrown in. Similarities include the opening of a prominent drumbeat, synthesizers and the subtle background beat which almost sounds as if it was lifted from the opening bars of IMHBL (Christmas...)
:-)
As somebody rightly suggested, EMI might have struck a deal (with themselves, strangely) making IMHBL only available on the Pretty Woman soundtrack for a certain length of time.
But we’ll never know what could have been!
Sascha said on June 29, 2005 15:20:
Wasn’t the soundtrack already out in mid 1990? A 3/4 year should have been enough for beng exclusive. I think the real reason probably was that they didn’t want too many ballads on on an overlong album, otherwise they could have included QOR as well.
Santi said on June 29, 2005 15:53:
Joyride was the best selling Roxette album ever, I don’t think that putting It Must Have Been Love in there would have improved that by much...
coyboyusa said on June 29, 2005 16:27:
if they had put imbl on joyride it would have been overkill, imbl had pushed the pretty woman soundtrack over the 9 million mark a year before joyride, putting imbl on joyride would have been as annoying as how alot of the singles kept recycling the look and dangerous, and peopel would have been put off paying for an album with stuff already released, and no offense but do you get (excited) is no wheres near being anything like imbl

hey lawyer that was the first cassette i ever bought when i was 10 years old.i think the cover was cool.
tevensso (moderator) said on July 11, 2005 08:57:
Plus that, to Roxette, IMHBL was an old X-mas song. I don’t think they even considered putting it on Joyride.
ChrisWilliams said on June 23, 2005 20:32:
I believe it’s because they enjoyed performing it and so it was included in the setlist for the “Join The Joyride” tour. They then re-recorded/remixed it slightly and added it to the Joyride album.
Why they didn’t put It Must Have Been Love on the Joyride album is beyond me :-/
