Some Statements About Joyride and Tourism Albums

14 replies

Hi Folks!

Here are two statements about Joyride and Tourism albums that I would like to share with you:

- As you may know, “Queen Of Rain” was intended to be placed at Joyride album, but it was replaced by “Perfect Day”;

- “Vulnerable” was written for Tourism album, but it was placed in Crash! Boom! Bang! album;

Those statements lead to the following conclusions:

a) Joyride album would be a “real masterpiece” with the addition of “Queen Of Rain” (and the subtraction of “Perfect Day”)...

b) Tourism album would be weaker than it already is, without “Queen Of Rain”, or stronger, with the addition of “Vulnerable”;

But those statements leave some doubts, too:

a) Which Tourism song would be picked as second single, instead of “Queen Of Rain”, if this song was placed in Joyride album? Would that be “Vulnerable”, if it was placed in Tourism album?;

b) Would “Perfect Day” be placed in Tourism album if “Queen Of Rain” was placed in Joyride album? If that happened, could “Perfect Day” be the second (or third) single?

c) Which Crash! Boom! Bang! song would be picked as single, instead of “Vulnerable”, if this song was placed in Joyride album?;

What’s your opinion about this?

Very interesting topic, and some good theories as well. As for other opinions, I might as well share my own. ;)

a) Which Tourism song would be picked as second single, instead of “Queen Of Rain”, if this song was placed in Joyride album?;

-If I could personally pick a song, I would probably lean towards either “The Rain”, “Silver Blue” or “Come Back (Before You Leave)”. They all seem so radio-friendly. It’s a wonder they didn’t release a 4th and 5th single from the album...

b) Would “Perfect Day” be placed in Tourism album if “Queen Of Rain” was placed in Joyride album? If that happened, could “Perfect Day” be the second single?

-I’m not too sure about this, personally. It sounds more like an album track than a radio song.

c) Which Crash! Boom! Bang! song would be picked as single, instead of “Vulnerable”, if this song was placed in Joyride album?;

-My choices, hands down, would be either “I’m Sorry” or “What’s She Like?” Both very good songs, and not to mention radio-friendly as well.

:)

“”Vulnerable” was written for Joyride album”

I don’t believe that the song was written FOR the Joyride album...I remember reading somewhere that it was written too late to appear on Joyride, and it didn’t suit Tourism so it went to CBB.

@animalkingdom

You are right. Actually, “Vulnerable” “was written a week too late for the Joyride album” as Per said once...

And I can tell you that you read that at the “Don’t Bore Us - Get To The Chorus! Roxette’s Greatest Hits” booklet...

Anyway, I edited in my post, making that correction...

Ok, for you first question I would choose THE RAIN as second single off Tourism.

The single for CBB instead of Vulnerable.... I dont know, I dont think CBB has radio-friendly songs, except the singles chosen by the company in 1994-95. Nor even Vulnerable sounds radio friendly, maybe if they had included Crazy About You I´d choose that one...

They added Perfect day instead of Queen of Rain because it would be better for the concerts / tour that was planned.

I’ve always thought The Rain or Keep Me Waiting should have been released from Tourism.

Don’t think Perfect Day would’ve been a good choice as a single if it were on Tourism. as n-Somnia said, its more of an album track than a single.

And I’m Sorry or What’s She Like? from CBB.

“Tourism album would be weaker than it already is, without ’Queen Of Rain’, or stronger, with the addition of ’Vulnerable’...”

Stronger with “Vulnerable”? In my oppinion it would make the album even more weaker!

Hi Folks!

Don’t agree, Perfect Day and Queen Of Rain are both very good songs. The difference between both songs is not so big.

b) Tourism album would be weaker than it already is, without “Queen Of Rain”, or stronger, with the addition of “Vulnerable”;

Without Queen of Rain (and no replacement added), Tourism is indeed weaker then it is now.
If Vulnerable is added instead of Queen of Rain, Tourism is not getting any stronger (QOR is a bit better song then Vulnerable IMHO), but if Vulnerable would be added additionally to the cuurent Tourism (incl. queen of Rain), then Tourism would of course be stronger then now.

But those statements leave some doubts, too:

a) Which Tourism song would be picked as second single, instead of “Queen Of Rain”, if this song was placed in Joyride album? Would that be “Vulnerable”, if it was placed in Tourism album?;

I would have picked Silver Blue.

b) Would “Perfect Day” be placed in Tourism album if “Queen Of Rain” was placed in Joyride album?

Fine by me!

If that happened, could “Perfect Day” be the second (or third) single?

No, it is a good Albumcloser, but not a good single.

c) Which Crash! Boom! Bang! song would be picked as single, instead of “Vulnerable”, if this song was placed in Joyride album?;

Lies

a) Which Tourism song would be picked as second single, instead of “Queen Of Rain”, if this song was placed in Joyride album? Would that be “Vulnerable”, if it was placed in Tourism album?

“The rain”.

b) Would “Perfect Day” be placed in Tourism album if “Queen Of Rain” was placed in Joyride album? If that happened, could “Perfect Day” be the second (or third) single?

“Perfect day” is great where it is... but yes, I guess it would be placed in Tourism album and maybe it could have been a good single choice cos it´s a wonderful song.

c) Which Crash! Boom! Bang! song would be picked as single, instead of “Vulnerable”, if this song was placed in Joyride album?;

“Harleys & Indians”.

@harriej

I didn’t mean that “Perfect Day” is worst that “Queen Of Rain” when I wrote that “Joyride album would be a ’real masterpiece’ with the addition of ’Queen Of Rain’ (and the subtraction of ’Perfect Day’)”; I meant that if “Queen Of Rain” was placed at Joyride album, consequently, “Perfect Day” would be dropped from that album...

Sorry, I used the wrong words... I could never say bad things about that real gem called “Perfect Day”...

Oops! I almost forgot to express my own opinion...

Here it goes:

a) Which Tourism song would be picked as second single, instead of “Queen Of Rain”, if this song was placed in Joyride album? Would that be “Vulnerable”, if it was placed in Tourism album?;

I would had picked “Come Back (Before You Leave)” as second single: I don’t like the idea of two singles in sequence with the same main singer. So, “Vulnerable” would be the third single;

b) Would “Perfect Day” be placed in Tourism album if “Queen Of Rain” was placed in Joyride album? If that happened, could “Perfect Day” be the second (or third) single?

Yes, “Perfect Day” is perfectly suitable to Tourism album; it would be the forth single, after “Vulnerable”;

c) Which Crash! Boom! Bang! song would be picked as single, instead of “Vulnerable”, if this song was placed in Tourism album?;

My choice should had been “Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way?” or “The First Girl On The Moon”...

In my opinion Tourism is not “a whole” of an album, it’s a kind of musical collage. For what I think that no one would have missed Queen of Rain in it.
Only the album would have become quite worse if they included a piano version of Perfect Day, which seeing what happened to other two or three songs, would not have been very unlikely.
Anyway, 15 instead of 16 songs is not that bad either, and I don’t really understand why every single album of Roxette must finish with a ballad. It leaves this bittersweet taste that their albums have and that is not especially good neither commercially nor musically in my opinion, because they never get far from themselves.
Actually their best album end with one of the most positive ballads they have (I’m talking about “go to sleep).

“but if Vulnerable would be added additionally to the cuurent Tourism (incl. queen of Rain), then Tourism would of course be stronger then now.”

No Harriej, no... it would have gotten unbereably long. You can’t add ballads just like that. Ballads are hard to get thru.
Adding things does not imply improving. Many times remove things does, because only the best remains and the whole improves as there are less “worse elements”.

This reminds me of drinking alcohol. Since drinking alcohol kills neurones and the neurones being killed are the less operative, certainly the performance of the remaining brains improves as a consequence :DDDD

For me it’s very hard to imagine that Roxette albums could be different than they are now. I can’t imagine Queen Of Rain being included in Joyride. It doesn’t fit the atmosphere of Joyride. Queen Of Rain it’s too “dark” for Joyride, so to speak. The same goes for Vulnerable. It doesn’t reflect the atmosphere of Tourism. Maybe only I can imagine Perfect Day being included in Tourism (in this case, it should replace another ballad) or even Crash!Boom!Bang!.

And I would release -

1. The Rain from Tourism
2. Harleys & Indians (Riders In The Sky) or Go To Sleep from Crash!Boom!Bang!
