Hocus Pocus & Almost Unreal

Does anybody here know the facts why Almost Unreal never made it onto the soundtrack to the film “Hocus Pocus” and why it really was featured on the Super Mario Bros. flop?

I think it definitely would have become even a bigger hit if it was on the Disney flick!

I heard it was because Bette Midler, one of the stars of “Hocus Pocus” wanted to do the soundtrack using mostly her songs, and no one else’s. And then the Super Mario Bros. people asked if they could have it for their soundtrack instead. Initially Per and Marie did it because they liked the actors in Super Mario Bros... then they saw it, and realized that they had made a terrible mistake! :-)

(I think it’s also partly explained in the liner notes of “Don’t Bore Us, Get To The Chorus)

In the 1994 cbb -concert in stockholm, marie said something like:” here comes a nice little ballad, but the movie its in is not that nice..”

LOL @ Marie’s comment at the concert!!

I read the funniest quote from Dennis Hopper...he said his 10 year old son asked him “Dad, why did you make Super Mario Bros?” Dennis answered “Well son, you see those expensive shoes you are wearing? That movie paid for those shoes.” His son thought about it and said “You know Dad - I didn’t need these shoes that much.” LOL!

i liked super mario bros me ! thought it was good fun ! but im from UK where film did best LOL

Yeah it did the best in the UK - but it still did shockingly poor! it’s not that great a film it has to be said...

I’ve never really watched more than a little of Super Mario Brothers, and it’s not one that I’m likely to seek out. But I get the impression that had the film been better, opinions about how the song was used would have been different. As far as I understand, they agreed because they like Bob Hoskins, who’d made a name on edgier, more adult fare. Instead they got it in a kiddie flick based on a video game.

As for Hocus Pocus, the song really doesn’t fit there either. And aside from the fact that the film’s title is in the first line of the chorus, I’ve never thought Almost Unreal would have been better off in that film. It’s a pleasant enough movie, but nothing great for anyone above a certain age.

I actually think I’d’ve liked it better had it been just a regular album track without having to have that subconscious relationship to any film, especially those two.

Well-said MM!!

I’m still trying to find a copy of SMB so i can hear the version of Almost Unreal that are played over the credits!!

the pulling of the song was pers decision, not bette midlers
