replies of moderators

Hello,
Sometimes I see that the moderators over here express their own opinion very sharply, not about the rules of discussion, but just about the topic itself (see for example http://www2.dailyroxette.com/smalltalk/thread.php/11825)
In my opinion a moderator should be neutral in his comments. If they want to give their own opinion, I think it is better they give this opinion using an other nickname or leave out the moderator-addition at their name.
Now it looks like a moderator has a certain opinion and that this is a fact, the only right opinion.
So: Tevensso, Judith, Roxeteer, LEO
My suggestion is that you only use the addition “moderator” to your name, if your comment is AS A Moderator.
If it is just a opinion, it would be better to leave out the “moderator”addition.
What do you think about this (as moderator)? ;)

we cannot leave the moderator “title” aside when we post. Either it is with or without - always
harriej said on October 26, 2004 20:11:
why don’t you use 2 nicks then?
Judith-moderator and judith-nonmoderator ;)
Jud (moderator) said on October 26, 2004 20:11:
lol too much work :P
besides i don’t think it makes a difference, everybody knows Judith or Thomas are moderators, whatever nick we would use ;)

harriej, don´t let the “moderator title” become a barrier to express your opinion on them or anyone else. They´re mature enough. They won´t bite you...
Judith you wouldn´t bite , would you? :)

True, but then it would be clear it was a post as your personal opinion and not viewing it from your moderator-point-of-view.

that’s the thing.. visually it could be distinguished, but in the brains and eyes of the people? Besides I think this is not necessary, moderators also have feelings ;)

yea, I don’t see what the artificial separation would do. It certainly wouldn’t be a benifit. Also, I think people overstate the need for nutrality in this environment. Its a by fans-for fans roxette (and related forum), right? Therefore, no-one here is entirely neutral. If jud, tev and visa were extra tolerant goverment officials (for example) providing a forum in which people could express opinions (positive or negative) about roxette, then nuetrality would be required. They would be there to oversee ethical and legal requirements in a neutral manner.
As such, they are just fans who run a very good fansite. Such ’nuetrality’ is not required. Yes, they maintain the site, archive threads, and oversee legal and other requirements. However liking or disliking the new Marie album (or anything else) is not really an opinion that will impair these abilities.
As for the name change suggestions: appearing without the ’moderator tag’ provides no significant separation, we know its still judith, tev etc....If for example judith was to change her name to ’Bob’ to express opinions, this would be potentially decpetive.
I think as its an ’online newspaper’ run for the purposes of journalism editorial opinions are appropriate.
only my opinions though, oam//
[edit] the government example could be better, but I don’t have time to fix it properly. How about ’providing a neutral public service/debate forum’

To me my opinion is always right, and that’s just because I’m me, not a moderator. I never moderate things that are “against me” if the comment is fair. I try to deal with everyone as professionally as possible. And I don’t think that moderators should be neutral at all. But hey, that’s me.
Still, I see your point, and many times I’ve felt that “this time I would want to post this thing as a normal user”. But on the other hand it feels hard to accomplish.
on_a_mission said on November 3, 2004 17:12:
yea, fair enough tev, that was the point I was trying to make, but its easier to say it when you are a moderator!
harriej said on November 4, 2004 20:35:
Fair enough, I see your points and it is ok with me.
Of course it is ok for moderators to give their opinion too!

I had the same thought once before when I noticed a sharp non-moderating comment in Small Talk beside the label ’Moderator’, as such opinions could be falsely interpreted as having a high level of authority like the rest of the superb TDR outfit. All the best, Rich
