My 2 Melissa Etheridge concerts (+ pics ;))

OH MY!! what 2 shows I lived this + last week!
We went to see Melissa in Hamburg on 15th. We initially thought of going to Hamburg + Munic (23rd) but then we decided (on 9th July!) that we’d go to Halmstad to see Gyllene Tider instead of Melissa’s Munic... a “sacrifice” Connie did for me as she knew it was important for me to see GT live and see on of my dreams come true.. so ok, after all we’d see 1x Melissa + 1x GT...
GT show was great - on 15th was Melissa’s time. We got to the venue about 1 hour after the doors opened and 1 before she started to play. Amazing as it might be, the front rows weren’t that crowded - actually there was plenty of place.. and we even had time to go to WC, check the merchandise (hell of expensive!) and then get a nice spot in the audience just on 4-5th row (by the end it became I’d say 3rd as people kept on moving during the show).
Kenny - the drummer - and Philip (guitar) entered the stage some minutes past 19:30 and started to prepare us for the first song.. “Lucky”.. the song was sounding and :O where is Melissa? :P suddenly she appeard, my first thought was “OH MY! It is MELISSA in front of us, so close...” and almost at same time “hell! she IS small!” :P
Well the show was great, the best live experience I’ve ever lived. She rocked in front of about 3000 people. The atmosphere (spelling?) was totally calm, cosy, .. no pushing no bugging .. fans were really relaxed just enjoying the music, Melissa’s voice and speeches (hell does she speak!) and the great musicians, specially Philip’s solos.. jeez is this guy good!!
It was a total different show to what I am used to with Rox&co and even Eva. She DID talk with the audience, she listened to what they told her and simply answered and joked around.. there’s a part during the show when the musicians leave and she sings “petitions” from the fans. This time she sang “Precious pain” and “The weaknes in me” that somebody asked for - one shouting it at her and the other writing it on a “sign” or “banner”.
I was totally blown away, I think I had my mouth dropped open the whole time (not only to sing :P) ...
So.. we got back to our hotel and 2 days later home and.. yes Melissa is still playing on Friday in München.. we both felt we HAD TO SEE her live again, it was such a need.. so we decided on Tuesday that we would drive to Munic and what the heck, see her live again - even though our holiday-budget had been spent already... - we thought we could see her the next time she tours Europe but.. WHO knows what will happen?
So there we went! We hoped to be in front row but when we arrived at the venue there were already quite some fans waiting.. we guessed they had been there since early morning :S
The Hamburg show was more relaxed, fans took it easier.. so did the security as we could take pictures but here in Munic.. that stupid security woman found my camera in the bag (hell did she dig deep! grr!) - she told me to give it to her collegue, that I’d get a number and could get it back after the show, I went to that other security person but then I “run” to the door... another security came to me and asked if I had left the camera.. I said “ja ja ja”, fkg them! ;) Anyway, I didn’t take any pictures because I was so excited with the show that I forgot!!!!
We run to the front - which was already taken by quite some people.. but still we got a great spot on 4th row. This time we were closer to the stage because the separation between the fence and the stage wasn’t that huge, so actually we had a better view of Melissa!
And there she was again! She changed the setlist (as she always does) quite a lot - as I said, this was totally different to what I am used to. She totally improvises, she sang some songs on both shows we went to but she played them totally different at the beginning.. so it was great because we could hear different songs ;)
The audience here was really good, they sang along almost all the songs and she loved that. She kept on saying “Oh! we are going to have a looot of fun tonite, oh yes we will” :P
She got many petitions at this show and once she said “oh my, we have so maaany petitions tonite, I will end up singing all my songs - oh what a long night would be ahead us then, playing until early morning”.. so well in the solo moment she sang 3 songs, she was supposed to sing 2 but then she just added a 3rd.
She totally loves to talk with her audience - she doesn’t really have any prepared speech.. in the middle of a song, “if you want to”, she got the cell phone of a girl in the front row, she had asked her to phone somebody who spoke english, and there she was, in the middle of a song, talking to Klaus, the fan’s brother!! She then started to sing on the phone.. it was hell of fun!!
We had our Melissa moment too, during “This moment” people “use” to move in a certain way, erh.. how to explain.. with the whole body to the right and then to the left, couples or/and friends holding eachother.. and she follows the movement on the stage during the chorus, but this time people didn’t really move like that, except Connie and I - she saw it and she started to move like that during the chorus and looked into our eyes, first Connie, then me, and she smiled :D
I forgot to say that Hamburg was open-air.. so we don’t know if she actually recognised us from Hamburg or she just liked that we were holding eachother etc - anyway, THOSE EYES!!!
In München it was very very hot - the venue’s A/C wasn’t really working I’d say.. so after joking and asking for scissors to cut her hair, she got another (better?) idea, she asked for a wet towel that she put on her hair and made them totally wet! Then she bugged the musicians with the towel, put it around Philips neck and then on Kenny’s head (bald) ...
There’s also a moment when Philip plays the guitar against a part of Melissa’s body. In Hamburg he played it on her belly - this time on her ass!!
And what Philip does with the guitar.. jeez!! he played it with a bottle of water and with his teeth.. and during his “solo” part he played it “imitating” the sound of a violin - some Mozart thingie - I was @_o
Ahhh well.. now we are totally hoooooked!!
GT were great, Marie was great, Eva was great.. but Melissa beat it all. I can only recommend you see one of her shows if you have the chance too :D
This woman just lives to play live! (and her children + Tammy ;)) No need of a big screen-light show, neither great costumes or stage design.. just she + her guitar are enough :P
I could be talking about her non - stop :P

Muchas gracias, Vielen Dank, Thank you, Tack så mycket Judith! (any other language you speak, so I can thank you in that language as well?? :-))
I really loooooove Melissa. Her voice is soooo great (especially in songs like ’Dance without sleeping’ and when she sings really low....my oh my! THAT gives me goose bumps and makes me crawl!).
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to go to see her live in Amsterdam July 12th/13th because of the damn money I didn’t have and those ridiculous prices of the tickets (euro 42.50). Anyway, GT is waiting for me though :-)
Thanx for the review, it’s great to read it :-) I saw her live a few years ago and she does talk a looooot and interact with her audience a looooooot too! Hopefully some bootleg will show up soon :-)

Cool review. I’m glad you had a lot of fun both times! Melissa is one of my favourite performers, although I have yet to see her live.
