Holland / The Netherlands

is it true everyone rides a bike in Holland?
Does your bike get stolen easily over there?
Another question...
The Netherlands = Holland
or
The Netherlands = Holland AND Belgium?
What about Luxembourg?

Belgium + Nederland + Luxembourg = BENELUX
Refering to The Netherlands as Holland (as way too many people does) is as wise as saying that Glasgow is an English city.

Almost everyone rides a bike here, yeah. and bike theft is prevalent sure. but not more than usual.
Luxemburg and belgium are two different countries with their own sovereign (sic?) governments. Holland is also a separate country.

Holland = The Netherlands > country
We do have 2 provinces/counties that are called
’Zuid-Holland’ (literally: ’South-Holland’) and ’Noord-Holland’ (literally ’North-Holland’) and both provinces are in the western part of Holland/The Netherlands.
Anyway, you won’t offend Dutch people when you say ’Holland’ or ’The Netherlands’.

and to answer your ’bike-question’: Yes, many people ride bikes. The city Groningen is Europe’s #1 bike-city and # 3 (two cities in China beat Groningen) on the worldlist :-)
Many bikes are getting stolen, but if you have a good lock on it the change is smaller :-) A bike of a friend of mine was once stolen and she went to the police station. The police answered; ’So, why don’t you just steal an other bike?!’ and he meant it...

Holland is not the same as The Netherlands, although a lot of people think it is.
Even some dutch people say Holland if they mean The Netherlands.
In fact Holland is only the western part of the country (2 provinces; north-and south-holland).
The Netherlands has 12 provinces:
Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Flevoland,Gelderland, Utrecht, Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant and Limburg.
The Benelux is: Belgium, Netherlands and Luxemburg.

well, you can see businessmen riding bikes while talking on their mobile phones!!! At first it was so surprising for me but now I see how easy and usefull it can be. I can go wherever I want with my bike ...
My bycicle has been stolen 4 times in last 9 months and I am getting used to it. The onl thing that you have to learn is buying a cheap bike or keep an eye on your bike even when it is in the store downstairs at nights!!!
Aaso said on July 20, 2004 13:29:
yeah the first time I went shoping and I locked it infront of the supermarket and after 5 minutes it was gone. They funny thing was that they left me the brocken lock!
The second time It was at school when I came back to ride my bike home There was nothing ...
The third time I went out with my friends and we locked our bikes together in order to avoid anything like this and again it did not work...
and finaly the forth time, somebody got it in my own home I out it in my store and in the morning I had to walk to the school again!!!!

What is the number 1 city???
I always thought people mistake the Netherlands for Holland. It always confused me but i liked holland more so I often referred to it as Holland. So how come the football team was from Holland and not The Netherlands? I mean here it was. It’s still a bit confusing. But oh well :D.
Everyone rides his/her bike to school here in victoria as I think Victoria is one of the most active cities in the world. We have a huge over 60 population though so no matter how many students ride their bikes to school, we will still be far off from getting some ranking. My keyboard is a mess.

Not from there, but still... ;-)
“Another question...
The Netherlands = Holland
or
The Netherlands = Holland AND Belgium?”
Neither - Holland is only the name of a part of the Netherlands (a province or state or whatever you want to call it) and Belgium is a whole different country!
