Lover of Mine

and, of course, Black Velvet.

@LaMan: Funny you mention Ten Sharp.
One of my collegeas is the brother of the singer of Ten Sharp.
When this collegea was promoted to professor, his brother came to perform the big hit YOU.
Good One-hit wonders:
Ph.D-I won’t let you down.
Survivor-Eye of the Tiger
Men at work-Down Under
Mylene Farmer-Desenchantee
Critical Mass-Believe in the future
Cheap trick-I want you to want me
LaMan said on July 6, 2004 10:26:
Men At Work, Mylene Farmer and Martika are not 1 hit wonders!
MAW had 2.

Roxette: Listen To Your Heart
harriej said on July 6, 2004 20:22:
It is the only hit I know, sorry!
I’d like to hear more from them, then.
Euro4Ever said on July 6, 2004 22:16:
@ harriej:
I like some Critical Mass, Dutch dance, but they never released an album. but they had more great commercial dance/club songs (don’t know if they were hits but still):
“In Your eyes” - my fave, and their last i think.
“Together In dreams”
“Believe in the future”
“Happy generation”
Also Men at Work had anohter hit called “Who can It be Now’, was also very popular song
Roxlander said on July 6, 2004 22:26:
Survivor, Alannah Miles, Men At Work, Cheap Trick and Martika, none of them are one hit wonders.
I have a lot of favourite one hit wonder, I couldn’t choose one.
Euro4Ever said on July 6, 2004 22:30:
many people consider these to be one hit wonders, maybe in purely commercial sense they were:
Cutting crew “I just died in you arms tonight”
When in rome “the Promise”
A-Ha is pretty much a one-hit wonder in US.
So are Alphaville.... at least in US
coyboyusa said on July 7, 2004 12:33:
martika only had one #1 in the usa so technically here she is i love her album that had toy soldier on it i broke thetape twice i still have it somewhere lol

Euro: I have Believe in the future single. Lame.
LaMan said on July 7, 2004 14:14:

Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
Mr. Big - To be with you

Chesney Hawkes - I am the one and only
Nick Kamen - I promised myself

Soulsister - The way to your heart (was one in Germany at least)
Lou Bega - Mambo No. 5
Los Del Rio - Macarena (and oll the other “summer hits”)
roxtexanet said on July 7, 2004 15:59:
@coyboy: Martika had only one US #1 single, but she had 4 top 30 hits which isn’t bad...
“More Than You Know” - 18
“Toy Soldiers” - 1
“I Feel The Earth Move” - 25
“Love Thy Will Be Done” - 10
The two US top tens make her at least a two hit wonder, I think... funny, my girlfriend and I were just talking about Martika the other day, each of us surprised the other knew who she was!
roxtexanet said on July 7, 2004 17:43:
Anyone remember Michelé? Her hit was “No More Lies” and I don’t think there were any others. The chorus was some guy talking to her through a phone saying things like, “You’re all I think about” and her replying “No more lies!”... from the great year 1989, I think...
The best one though is definitely When In Rome’s “The Promise,” which someone already mentioned (also from ’89!)... what a great song, still sounds fantastic! The lyrics are nothing fancy, but simple and sweet... I think this is why this song stuck around as long as it did...
The lyrics:
The Promise - When in Rome
If you need a friend, don’t look to a stranger,
You know in the end, I’ll always be there.
But when you’re in doubt, and when you’re in danger,
Take a look all around, and I’ll be there.
I’m sorry, but I’m just thinking of the right words to say.
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be.
But if you’ll wait around awhile, I’ll make you fall for me,
I promise you, I promise you I will.
When your day is through, and so is your temper,
You know what to do, I’m gonna always be there.
Sometimes if I shout, it’s not what’s intended.
These words just come out, with no gripe to bear.
I’m sorry, but I’m just thinking of the right words to say.
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be.
But if you’ll wait around awhile, I’ll make you fall for me,
I promise you, I promise you...
I’m sorry, but I’m just thinking of the right words to say.
I know they don’t sound the way I planned them to be.
And if I had to walk the world, I’d make you fall for me,
I promise you, I promise you I will.
I gotta tell you, I gotta tell you, I need to tell you...
I will. I will.
coyboyusa said on July 8, 2004 16:03:
lol having a number 2 or 2 top 20 singles doesnt make u more than a one hit wonder i realliy like the songs like water and if your tarzan I’m jane that martika did i so miss the 80’s!
Roxlander said on July 8, 2004 22:27:
Besides “Runaway Train” Soul Asylum had two very good songs: Just like anyone and Misery, I think they were from their second album.
I loved Martika, she reminds me the early 90’s wonderful music. Good days.
For me typical “one hit wonder” are those who had a super hit, and that’s all. But if there are two or three songs known by an artist, they certainly aren’t one hit wonders, it doesn’t matter where the songs were hits.
coyboyusa said on July 9, 2004 15:00:
soul aylum had another number one with black gold unless i am mistaken
roxtexanet said on July 9, 2004 18:53:
@coyboy: I don’t agree with your definition of one hit wonder at all... it’s not just number 1 singles that count! When people talk about one hit wonders, they’re talking about groups that literally had one song anyone remembers and then just vanished, like Nikki French or Donna Lewis... by your definition, ABBA would be one hit wonders (1 US #1, “Dancing Queen”)!!!
roxtexanet said on July 9, 2004 18:55:
Oh oh oh oh!! Just thought of a great one hit wonder: Natural Selection’s “Do Anything” ! Anyone remember that one, from 1991? Jostled with “Fading Like a Flower” and “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)” for the top of the US charts? I loved that song, I even bought the album which sucked horribly... but that song was fantastic!
Another one: Calloway “I Wanna Be Rich” from ’89, I think...
Kiwein1 said on July 9, 2004 19:08:
@roxtexanet: I agree with your definition of a one-hit-wonder! :)

Tarzan Boy - Baltimora
So alive - Love and Rockets

I read some One Hit Wonder-chart (think it was from the US) and they listed Ace of Base as a one hit wonder :)
Also I find VH1’s one hit wonder chart rather amusing since they chose both Kajagoogoo’s (sp?) Too shy and Limahl’s Neverending story (Limahl was the singer in Kaja...)
coyboyusa said on July 10, 2004 14:08:
ace of base did only have one usa chart #1 with the sign, atsw was number 2 and living in danger was like num,ber 18 or something beautiful life never hit the top 40 neither did cruel summer

Proclaimers “I’m Gonna be 500 miles”
Rembrandts “I’ll be there for you”

Proclaimers one hit wonders? Maybe in the States, OK :-) ... But not here in the UK...
For those interested, check out this for the *most Scottish* band ever: http://www.proclaimers.co.uk/2003/the_music.html (from The Best Of click on Letter From America / Let’s Get Married / I’m Gonna Be (500 miles) which were big here in the UK). Enjoy:-)
(he he, they used to live near me, in Auchtermuchty, Fife...). All the best, Rich

I‘d like to add some to the list:
SAFETY DANCE (by Men without hat) Everybody
know this song (at least the music)
but few know who sang it and if they had other hit. That, for me, is the definition of a One hit wonder...an other:
BORN TO BE ALIVE: (70‘s) The guy who sang this particular one, had retired from the music business just after because he had enough money and he bought a bar somewhere in the south for ‘his retirement“
But the most famous One hit wonder for me is:
ROCK AND ROLL PART 2 : by (dont know his first name but his last is Glitter) it‘s the famous song that we hear in sporting events like hockey games and others. Even if this guy had know others hits for the rest of his life, the royalities must take care of the rest...

Natalie Imbruglia (not Impruglia lol ;) second album was great much better than the first but I don’t think it did that well. I think she is working on something new as we speak.
Strest said on July 12, 2004 23:28:
The Rembrandts is NOT a one hit wonder
Even though most ppl know about them cuz of the Friends-theme they had a huge hit with ’Just the way it is, baby’ in the early 90’s.
While ’I’ll be there for you’ may be their most famous song it wasn’t even released as a single so if they’re a one-hit-wonder it would have to be cuz of their breakthrough-hit JTWIIB...
Strest said on July 12, 2004 23:45:
Oh, and Gary Glitter is definitely not a one hit wonder :)
He was one of the most popular artists in the UK during the 1970’s with several top 10 and #1’s
roxtexanet said on July 13, 2004 00:26:
I think Gary Glitter is best known these days for being a convicted pedophile!
Men Without Hats (who are Canadian) had another huge hit in Canada around ’86 - ’87 called “Pop Goes The World”... love that song! Much better than “Safety Dance”!
TheRain1981 said on July 15, 2004 07:07:
Yes, I love “Pop Goes The World” and also think it’s better than “The Saftey Dance.” “Pop” hit #20 in the USA, I believe. I also remember “Do Anything” by Natural Selection. That’s a great song!
TheRain1981 said on July 15, 2004 07:09:
“ace of base did only have one usa chart #1 with the sign, atsw was number 2 and living in danger was like num,ber 18 or something beautiful life never hit the top 40 neither did cruel summer”
Actually, “Don’t Turn Around” reached #3. “Living In Danger” hit #20. “Beautiful Life” hit #15. “Cruel Summer” hit #10.
TheRain1981 said on July 15, 2004 07:11:
“Crush - Jennifer Page”
It’s a shame she’s known as a one-hit wonder. I bought her second album, ’Positively Somewhere,’ (released in 2001) and was positively surprised at how good the material was - much better than “Crush.” In the USA, “These Days” was the first single. Germany got “Stranded” as a single. My favorite is probably “Here With Me.” Great album. Check it out.

Jill Sobule - I Kissed A Girl. I do believe this was her only hit?

btw Soft Cell were not 1 hit wonders

Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
You - The Bugler (has been only a hit on german radio SWR3)
TheRain1981 said on July 18, 2004 02:14:
In Europe, T’Pau’s “China In Your Hand” is their biggest hit. It was #1 on the UK singles chart back in 1987 for 5 weeks I believe. In the USA, people only know “Heart And Soul.” “China” is an excellent track too. I had no idea they had other hits either until I was looking at some UK charts.
LaMan said on July 19, 2004 08:38:
coyboy: where do you get your info from? lol
others: it always amazes me Heart and Soul was bigger than “China” in the States. I don´t think H&S has any hit potential at all.
cheers

Does it really matter whether or not someone is listed as a one-hit wonder or not. If you ask me that just means that those artists/groups were amazingly talented for their time and the music speaks for itself, otherwise no one would remember the songs let alone the artist/group. My fave one-hit wonder of all time is Sly Fox and their hit “Lets Go All The Way”
Not only is it catchy and hard to resist, but its also got a good main point to it!
Also, that song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” cause why not just admit it to yourself everone loves that song at one time or another.

Hmmmmm....a one hit wonder?
Does Chris Isaac count? He is a very talented musician.....but his hit “Wicked Game” was quite original. Plus he is quite cute.........i’m sure the girls could appreciate that. (wink....wink).
Although he may not be known outside of America.
Hmmm.........let’s see..a ” One Hit Wonder” everyone may recognize. Seems like such an unfair and degrading description for a muscian or musical group though....lol.
Would the Thompson Twins qualify? Their song “Doctor, Doctor”, that was a good one.
” Can’t you see their burnin’, burnin’ !” lol
Skye said on September 14, 2004 07:51:
Oh !....just thought of one more !.......Adam Ant ! Ya ! The ultimate...lol.Goody Two Shoes i think it was called.
RoxHard said on September 14, 2004 19:20:
The true definition of a one hit wonder is when an artist has only 1 rememberable hit to their name.
Take Aqualung for example. He had 1 top 10 hit in the UK (because of one of those mobile phone ads!). He has also had another appearance in the UK top 40 - but no one knows it! So, he is a one-hit wonder.
And I totally agree with the person who said their is life outside the US (obviously!). I mean, The Cardigans are 1-hit-wonders in the US... but, if they choose to ignore Gran Turismo & Long Gone Before Daylight... well then, that’s their stupidity...

Though the US is not ALL bad.
My only concern is that people over here in the US get a bit too pridefull and make the our country look bad. We’re not all like that.......i promise !
But enough about us...it’s about YOU !.......................ALL of YOU !.............NOT moi.
