Saddest Songs Ever

Just thought about wide-ranging the question as the general Roxette forum has this about the Roxette songs...
So what are the saddest songs (or pieces of music) ever in your opinion?
- THE LONELY SHEPHERD (featured on the soundtrack to Kill Bill Vol. 1)
- TAXI RIDE & A SORTA FAIRYTALE (by Tori Amos)
- AGENT ORANGE (by Depeche Mode)
- BARBER’S ADAGIO FOR STRINGS (by William Orbit, as on the album)
- RETURN TO INNOCENCE (by Enigma)
- HERE COMES THE FLOOD (by Peter Gabriel)
- TIME STOOD STILL (by Madonna)

the cure - trust
sinead o’connor - nothing compares 2U & black boys on mopeds
are the first which came to my mind...

I don’t really know if Time Stood Still would be one of the more sad Madonna songs. I’d have personally thrown ’Has To Be’ in there instead - “i should be glad that i’m alive/ it could have been much worse”...
But I agree with your choice on William Orbit’s Adagio For Strings - 9:31 of pure beauty!
And also... my choices:
A Camp ’My Misery Is A Mystery’
Moby ’Guitar Flute & String’
The Cardigans ’And The You Kissed Me’
Sheryl Crow ’Weather Channel’
Bjork ’Harm Of Will’
Natalie Imbruglia ’Hide Behind The Sun’
REM ’Falls To Climb’

Agent Orange is a very sad instrumental indeed, animalkingdom. Walking In My Shoes, The Bottom Line, Home, Insight are so too.
Has anyone already mentioned Sting’s Fragile?
roxtexanet said on May 2, 2004 01:47:
@coyboy: “The Day Before You Came” really is a very sad song! It’s my favourite ABBA song, though...
Saddest song: “Point Hope F.O.I.A.” by the Indigo Girls... the lyrics refer to a group of Native Americans who used to get together and watch atomic testing carried out by the US government as a sort of fun thing to do on a Sunday, with no awareness of what it was doing to their health... part of the story is told through the eyes of a woman telling her son that he doesn’t need to mine uranium for a living, and how years of exposure to uranium radiation killed his father and is killing her too... extremely sad! But a brilliant song...
roxtexanet said on May 3, 2004 21:15:
Alanis’ “That Particular Time” from “Under Rug Swept” is pretty sad... she recorded it right after breaking up with someone and her voice balances on the edge of breaking into tears through the whole song. Beautiful track from an under-rated album.

There’s something about the ’mini version’ of The Cardigans’ “Hold Me” that really gets me. Maybe it’s because the song is only 36 seconds long, and maybe it’s just the sweet and haunting lyrics/melody.

How come no one mentioned Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven???
A song to his dead 4yr old son (he fell from a 53rd floor) :(
Tears In Heaven
——————-
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
’Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I’ll find my way
Through night and day,
’Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven.
Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.
Beyond the door,
There’s peace I’m sure,
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven.
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong
And carry on,
’Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Evanescence’s Hello is pretty sad. It’s like a darker version of My Immortal (but with only a dark piano refrain... like Beethovan’s Moonlight Sonata)...
Hello
“Playground school bell rings again
Rainclouds come to play again
Has no one told you she’s not breathing
Hello
I’m your mind giving you someone to talk to
Hello
If I smile and don’t believe
Soon I know I’ll wake from this dream
Don’t try to fix me, I’m not broken
Hello
I’m the lie living for you so you can hide
Don’t cry
Suddenly I know I’m not sleeping
Hello
I’m still here, all that’s left of yesterday”

These are the days of our lives - Queen (and the video is even more sad...)

I generally think instrumental songs are some of the saddest songs you could ever hear. It’s all well and good when the song has lyrics - but, if it’s instrumental, you can come up with your own meaning. I think these are some of the saddest instrumental songs:
Beethovan: “Moonlight Sonata”
The Cardigans: “Nil”
The Corrs: “Rebel Heart”
Moby: “God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters”
William Orbit: “Pieces In A Modern Style 3”
William Orbit: “Ogive Number 1”
They’re all pretty sad...

Bibi said on July 22, 2005 12:10:
The sadest song ever is definitely
NUR ZU BESUCH
which means “Only visiting” in English. It’s a terribly sad farewell-song by the famous German punkrock band DIE TOTEN HOSEN. Though this song is no punkrock but a beautiful ballad. It really made me cry a few times. The singer of the band wrote it down after his mother’s death. The song is about someone who visits the grave of a dear person. It’s a kind of dialogue.
Bibi said on July 22, 2005 12:19:
For those who speak German! Here are the lyrics:
rox-kuryliw said on July 22, 2005 12:30:
im suprised not many people said roxette ’anyone’
Anyone who felt like I do
Anyone who wasn’t ready to fall
Anyone who loved like I do
Knows it never really happens at all
It’s over when it’s over
What can I do about it
Now that it’s over
Everything more or less is looking so meaningless,
And fades to grey
Lying awake in an ocean of teardrops,
I float away
Bibi said on July 22, 2005 12:40:
@ Marie-Fan:
Yeah Celine Dion’s “My heart will go on” and Elton John’s “Candle in the wind” are also quite sad. I agree! Also “Only time” by Enya. But all these songs got this attention because they are connected with really sad events like the death of Lady Di, the 11th september or the terribly sad movie “Titanic”.
I think the special thing about my song suggestion is that it is not conneted with any tragedy which was in the focus of the public. I mean when you listent to “Candle in the wind” you remember immediately the death of Princess Diana for instance.
But NUR ZU BESUCH is a very personal song everyone can identify with because everyone will experience sooner or later what is discribed in this song.
