Wisdom teeth

Ack.
I have to get my lower wisdom teeth taken out in about a month, and I told the oral surgeon that I would just like a local anesthetic, instead of sedation. Judging from my friends’ reactions, I’m thinking that I should have opted for general anesthesia!
Just curious about other people’s experiences– I’m assuming that most of the people here have gotten their wisdom teeth taken out...

I had my wisdom teeth removed two years ago I think. For me it wasn’t all that bad because all four of my teeth were through, meaning they had to do less digging around to get the teeth. I went into surgery at like nine in the morning and I was home and in bed by ten thirty.
I do remember waking up in the recovery room crying. Apparently when removing wisdom teeth they hit the same nerve that causes you to cry. I thought I was so good after the operation that I would be able to drive home. Needless to say my mom took my car keys.
I got home and slept from like ten-thirty until six at night, than woke up and watched Sponge Bob Square Pants. The next night I was eating pasta and cereal again. I like... didn’t swell up or bruise at all which is a shame... I was looking forward to it.
If you want I can post the picture of my wisdom teeth... unless that would freak some people out.
Cheers

About 2 years ago I had both my upper wisdom teeth removed. They gave me local anesthesia and it took about 15 minutes before it worked (which is normal). Both the teeth were out in about 2 - 3 minutes (though one of them was kinda grown towards my cheek). I got a painkiller (in Holland the brand is ’Ibuprofen’) which I took before the anesthesia wasn’t working anymore. I took the painkiller every 4-6 hours for about 1,5 day. I didn’t feel any pain. So, next time (if there will be one) I won’t be scared :-)

Some month ago I had my lower wisdom teeth removed (first 1, later the other because there was a bit of the bone covering them). I got local anesthesia. It took some days till I started eating “hard” food again... to be sure that there would be nothing in the wounds... The first teeth was really no problem, if you only keep it cool all the time. after the second surgery my cheek got really big. but I got some penicillin and it was over after some days.
I hate taking pills so I didn’t the first time. I was aching big time, but I survived.
Second time the pain was stronger (the surgery was little more complicated also), so I took 1 pill (even I took ibuprofen), but then it had to be.
But I guess if you take some pain killers it won’t be hurting so much.
And in the end everything works out in all cases...

I sobbed a bit after I came out of the anesthesia as well—they told me it was a common reaction to the stuff.
Had mine out—all 4 in one go—Spring Break the year I went to college.
Got dry socket. Not fun.

I had mine removed about six years ago. First the ones on the left side and two weeks later the ones on the right side. I had local anaestesia both times and didn’t have much problems - well I got strong painkillers (Ponstan) and of course my jowls were swollen and I couldn’t eat properly for some days. Strange enough the third day after the surgery was the worst when it comes to pain...
Now I’m glad they’re out because there isn’t enough space in my jaws...

hi
a friend of mine got the 4 of them removed and she got general anestesia, but I don’t know if this is like that in Spain/my town or if she asked for it.
She couldn’t eat for some 10 days or so (because it was the 4 of them at once! she didn’t want to go through the operation, anestesia etc 2x), during that time she ate mostly liquids.. she said it hurt but it did hurt a lot more meanwhile she had them.. (that’s why she got them removed ;))
Most dentists say that these teeth aren’t useful /necessary and that in the future (millions of years ;)) we won’t have them.. and many recommend to remove them just because.. well mine are there, they hurt while growing (normally they do.. every month or 2x they used to hurt for a couple of days) but if they grow fine.. no problem (unless they get caries ;))
So don’t worry so much about the operation! If you feel you will take it better with general anestesia (and you are fit for it) then just ask for that. It takes longer to awake but if it makes you feel more like.. “secure” - well, why not.
Good luck!

I had mine removed about 5 years ago. All of them at the same time and the postion of the upper ones wasn’t that good but I wouldn’t say it was a very bad exprience. It was ok. I got a local anestesia and about 3 hours later had lost 4 teeth, looked looked a hamster and took two pills and that was it. It didn’t hurt much. Of coures eating was quite a problem but just because I couldn’t open my mouth. I was even able to go to a party at the same day. Sure, there were parties I enjoyed more than that one but it was possible to go there. But people react differently. A friend of mine got fever and felt totally ill for a whole week. But don’t be afraid! There are many horror stories about having one’s wisdoms teeth removed but they don’t neccessarily have to come true.

I’m also beginning to wonder if iit isn’t all a big cash grab– my wisdom teeth aren’t even bothering me, and yet I have to get them out. Gah. Oh well.
Thanks for the kind words and stories you guys!

Mine was removed so they could fix the molar in front of it. No big deal. I still have 3 more and am STILL as dumb as a box of rocks.
annorlunda said on April 22, 2004 10:51:
Yeah, it seems strange to get the advice to take them out if they don’t bother the human being having them... I only got my lower out because there wasn’t enough room and they had come out with the frant halv and the other halv was stuck under the bones... so it was neccessary.
Why should you have to do a surgery if it’s unnesccessary? those doctors don’t seem reasonable to me.

I had oral surgery before. I forgot what they gave me but whatever they did give me knocked me out good. Get whatever knocks u out, u’ll be happy u did. But if ur afraid of needles beware! I’m not, I think they’re cool. *lol*

anarem: the teeth aren’t bugging you at all? maybe you should ask WHY you gotta remove them.. you know, maybe they don’t hurt but stop other teeth to be as they should or whatever..

When I was younger ( a little while back now!!) I had a total of 12 teeth taken out coz my mouth was too small (can u believe that?!) so now.....I have 4 wisdom teeth trying to get out......bastards....they bloody hurt!!!! but theres room for them to come thru :-) still.....now i know what pain little kiddies must be in when theyre teething, except they cant drink alcool to numb it ;)
stunt101sista said on April 23, 2004 21:17:
Really? My mouth was too small too. They had to take 4 teeth out and I had these freakishly messed up teeth in the roof of my mouth. So they had to take those out too. I swear afterwards when u looked at me I looked like one of the Who People from Whoville.
annorlunda said on April 24, 2004 20:48:
same here. they took out 2 upper teeth when I was a kid. result of this is that my upper wisdom teeth have enough room now... =)

I’m creeped out now by someone starting the topic... my friend went in to hospital to have her wisdom tooth out last week, she has waited ages to get an appointment...
And today I hear from my friend, her daughter who is my age has an impacted wisdom tooth...
What next ME! I hope bloody not!!! ;)

I had teeth removed too. I have a dodgy jaw, so was no room for my wisdom teeth to come in.
Darn did I throw blood up for AGES!
EWW EWW EWW!
I can still smell that gas:(
ally77 said on May 9, 2004 10:12:
The smell of the gas can be recreated everytime I go to visit the museum in Bolton... it just reeks of the same smell, makes me wanna throw up when I go... which is not very often I might add ;)

I don’t know why,I’m forever young!
LittleSpooky said on May 9, 2004 22:44:
Ana: Are you having other dental work done (busted molar fixed, root canal, etc)? That MIGHT be the reason for having your wisdom teeth removed. Especially if you’re getting braces or something like that.
Anarem said on May 10, 2004 00:18:
Actually, the oral surgeon said that my wisdom teeth should be taken out because he thinks they’re pushing against my back molars. I don’t feel anything moving, nothing is hurting, but I do notice that my bottom front teeth are becoming more and more crooked. So maybe the doctor is right, who knows? I just don’t like the idea of surgery. It’s like taking out your tonsils because one day you *might* get tonsilitis.
LittleSpooky said on May 11, 2004 05:39:
Ana: What he’s doing is preventing you what would be about $2,500 worth of braces and other orthodontic work. Not to mention the pain of that. This is one time that the ounce of prevention WILL be beneficial. I should have had braces when I was 11, but my dad never got them. Now I have a bit of an overbite, my back teeth are a bit further apart than they should be, and my fronts are a bit crowded.
I think it’s a good idea to get it done before you wind up with a REALLY bad smile. :-D

Hi all,
Got my wisdom teeth out this afternoon! Ow, ow, ow, the freezing is starting to wear off, but I just took some Tylenol-3s, so I’ll be as high as a kite soon enough, and feeling no pain. It really hurts to swallow, though. Right now I’m using ice packs to reduce/prevent swelling, switching to hot pads tomorrow... yee hah! And hooray, I don’t have to go to work tomorrow!
ally77 said on June 11, 2004 06:03:
Yeah Zoe had her’s done last weekend, she was in pain, the swelling came days laters... but she got a week off work!

I had my left lower removed some time ago and I went out. Can’t remember if I said I wanted that or not. And the pain afterwards is really different from person to person. Mine was a dull ache, took the necessary stuffs for it all and did just fine. I was back to work the next day and my job requires me to make announcements for intersections, transfers, etc.
