World Idol

I’m so glad the guy from Norway won. Not much to look at, but he has a beautiful voice. Hurray!

what did I miss? Oh, a contest with those wannabees? ;) It’s so damn sad, so damn sad that these ppl who have never touched an instrument and have to be tought EVERYTHING are getting all this attention while real artists are starving and fighting hard to get a shitty demo-cd contract that won’t reach further than their local radios! (IF)

im pleased it was him aswell . see that US girls face LOL .

rox-kuryliw: YEah hahaha!
Judith: IT’s not like they brought someone there without any competition! SO many people auditioned to get to where they got to. Well yes some of them are horrible. I like the dude who did Nirvana, very brave of him. I also liked the Canadian Idol. He is a total rock and roller. And oh by the way, some had musical backgrounds. Some of them played in bands or weddings, restaurants and etc. I myself do not like Pop Music so any of those kids who sing pop music like the Brit guy, I do not like. Just my personal opinion.

Oy, all this negativity. *Of course* it’s a glorified karaoke contest. *Of course* these “Idols” will get their 15 minutes of fame and then fade away more often than not. I’m not saying that Pop/American/Canadian/World Idol is the greatest thing since sliced bread, it’s just a guilty pleasure for me. It’s a matter of taste. I like to watch people make asses out of themselves on television and be humiliated, because it’s pretty damn funny. But when they discover a singer who can *really* sing, like Kurt Nilsen, the pudgy plumber from Norway with bad teeth, it’s great. Sure, he could have toiled and toured and “paid his dues”, but really, he would never have ended up with a record contract, because he’s not photogenic enough to have on a CD cover. Doing the Norwegian version of “Idol” was the only way for him to break into the business. Ask yourselves, would Roxette have been as popular as they are, if Marie was an obese woman, and Per were a 90 pound weakling with bad teeth? They wouldn’t have had the chance to be heard by record execs, they’d have the door slammed in their faces. Give me a pudgy manufactured pop singer like Kurt Nilsen, over a manufactured pop diva like Britney who cannot sing to save her life.

” He would never have ended up with a record contract, because he’s not photogenic enough to have on a CD cover.” There we go. Very well said Anarem. I believe Rock and Rollers could be ugly or maybe in the 70’s they did not care about looks as much as they do now. Right now, it’s a slap in the face if you are fat or ugly. How many times did Simon call people fat or ugly on American Idol? He even called everyone on World Idol ugly except for Kelly ofcourse. Very well said Anarem.
kachina008 said on January 3, 2004 09:35:
they started caring about looks when MTV was first aired.
now it’s *all* about looks.
it’s funny about Idols...in Holland the most unlikely candidate won, it was said that they rigged the voting lines...now he is selling spectacles on TV.
whatever.

Just crious - what type of music does Kurt Nilsen do? I am thinking about picking up his CD from Ebay but can’t find anyplace that has samples of his cd. Is it pop rock? Something an ABBA/Roxette fan would like?
KungAvSand said on January 4, 2004 22:39:
I will say that it´s more pop than rock. But the songs are very guitar-based. Combined with his fab. voice, I think that it sounds good. Not as good as Roxette, but as a Roxette-fan I think you´ll like it. His cover-version of Tal Bachmans “She´s so high” was a huge hit in Norway this summer.
In the beginning I was very sceptical about this whole Idol-consept. But when this gives singers like Kurt (who is a very talented man) a chance to break through, I think it‘s great.

Tack! I’ll check ebay and see if I can find an inexpensive copy. :)

Kurt music is guitar based, mostly rock with the good elements of pop, U2 is his altime favorite band, so no wonder he chose to sing one of their songs in the World Idol. He is in a band called Fenrik Lane, and write most of his music on his own. On his album he has three coverversions; She’s So High, Odinary World and Games We Play.
His album will be released in Germany very shortly, no news about the rest of the world yet. Want to get it, try http://www.yeees.com/varer/Music/Music0156.html they ship internationally for free. (18.6 $, or 15.4 € )
During the Norwegian series he sang, amongst others, U2’s One,Beautiful Day & Stuck In The Moment, Saybia’s Day After Tomorrow, a-ha’s Hunting High And Low, and Ricky Martin’s Livin’ da Vida Loca.
He is just himself at all times, he refused to think he acctually could win, before the voting was over. He is very careful about his family, and was shocked when 3000 people met at the airport when he returned after winning.
He actually only just made it to the final 100 in Norway, the judges were divided in if he coudl really sing, but he proved them wrong. His gift is the song.
And for all those negative people about Idol, at least we got a lot of laughs of all those horrible tries of singing, dancing or whatever they did in tryign to become an Idol.

those British guys Will Young and Gareth Gates are crap.
—————————————————-
This is what Kurt said about his winning later on:
“it seems that those who voted for me ignored the jokes about my looks. People are beginning to understand that it isn’t just glamour that sells any more, but the opposite. People listen to the music, the song, and that was lucky for me.”
———————————————–
I´m glad any American or British did NOT win.

That’s absolutely right! The same with Duran Duran’s “Ordinary World”, just great. And of course his single: “She’s so high”

Its just entertainment thats all.... yeah youre right, soon they will fade.... look at those contests where they try and put pop groups together... some are still goin, but most of them are gone... cause they were obviously shitty! anyways, I just like to laugh at the ones with crappy voices lmao!
I like Simon Cowell though, he tells it like it is. World Idol was just a waste of time.

Anarem: I am very happy with the results although I wish Ryan had gotten more votes. He is amazing and not because he is Canadian, but his taste in music is awesome. He is a Rock and Roller and I just love it. I am very happy Kelly did not win which is a slap on Simon’s face.
