Disgusting National Dishes

Just for fun...

Name a traditional dish or meal from your country. The more disgusting, the better.

I’ll start...

WALES = LAVERBREAD
It’s not laver and it’s not bread, but rather raw seaweed, boiled until gooey.

Next...

Disgusting?

Ok!

Iran : Sirab Shirdoon

Nothing I can think of!

I LOVE, adore, crave... but some would probably think they’re revolting. It’s kind of like haggis, but without the gut. ;)

Hmmm, I think it’s safe to say that I could handle no pork faggots...

Hehehe! They’re like the most gorgeous thing ever! Especially ones from the local chippy.
I don’t know of any devonian foods, that are discusting! I’ve obviously never tried them!

Sweden - surströmming=fermented herring... Why someone would put something fermented in one’s mouth is beyond me.

beer is fermented and so’s wine ;)

US—The very Caifornia FISH TACO.

(I think I just threw up a little in my mouth.)

Well I live in the North West of England next to a town called Bury.. which is famous for it’s BURY BLACK PUDDING! Talk about yuk! **spews just thinking of it**

http://www.buryblackpuddings.co.uk

Black Puddings are a food made of dried pigs blood... I know disgusting!

ally: They look disgusting :(

Yashar: But so many people love sirabshirdoon. i myself have never even tried it cause of the smell. I also dislike zaboon which is the brain, tongue and other parts of a I dunno cow or some other animal.

In total, no matter how much I hate some certain foods, no food is disgusting.

Any vegeterians or vegans here?

I like black pudding... sure I was a vampire in a previous life! ;)

Vixz, your knowledge is beyond your years. ;)

@Damineh:Its smell is terrible. But I don’t know about its taste.

YAshar yeah ikh

black pudding is loverly....just don’t think about whats in it when you eat it LOL ....same goes for faggots really ;)

*apoligies for bad spelling, i’ve consumed lots of wine this evening* ;)

ewww I almost threw up reading this post!!!

I don’t like anything that contains any part of the body of an animal (besides the flesh) like liver, blood, intestins, brain, eeewwwww just thinking of it makes me wanna puke! I don’t like sausages, hamburgers.. these last ones unless they are home made and I know what is inside..

But I cannot think of any disgusing SPanish dish.. certainly cuz my mum doesn’t cook any disgusting thing :P

I don’t like so much of seafood, oisters and such, eeeeww!

Ah yeah! thinking of this now I came up with a discusting catalan or better from my region (Lleida) dish! the snails!! puke puke puke!

Of course, “Callos”. It’s the stomach of some animal...
If I have to say just a Valencian thing I would probably say “All i pebre”, with those eels they catch in that polluted lake called Albufera :s
I hate eels... they remind me of snakes and I HATE SNAKES... :SSSS

It’s traditional to put snails in paella (Another typical valencian creation...). Basically I don’t eat anything that is not rice and chicken meat in paella :D

brr :s

I think we’re the only country with “normal” food :p

Ohyeah,we have “Moules” :s Bleh :s

pickled pigs feet. my homie from Georgia would say: “mmm mmmm then yous can suck the vinegar out of the hoof all day like a jawbreaker”

** throws up over PC**

“then yous can suck the vinegar out of the hoof all day like a jawbreaker”

HAHAHAHA! Classic!
nothing I can think of right now, that is manky...

Haggis, man.....

I really hate
Boerenkool met worst
and cheese!
But most dutch people like this, so probably I am just weird!

Can‘t call it traditionnal but i don‘t understand why there still have it in grocery stores here: Pork tongues in vinegar... talk about discusting. I wouldn‘t even give it to my dogs...

True story, i wen‘t fishing in an indian reserve and ate black bear: the discusting part is that it was outside, raw, in summer, for three months...

i‘m good for fear factor...

In Norway we have Lutefisk - which means dried cod treated with lye. But it does look like gelly-fish, most people get off by the looks of it. It does devide Norway into two, one half that loves Lutefisk, the other hates it! Nothing differs people’s taste more than Lutefisk.

Some info and recipe (if you dare): http://www.sofn.com/norwegianculture/recipes/Lutefisk.html

Balut from the Philippines, which is basically an unhatched baby chick. That is so messed up!

Anarem: I’ve seen that on a travel programme... the guys shining unhatched eggs under a light... the chicks have to be near hatching size... then they’re cooked. I can’t imagine that... but I guess it’s no different to me eating normal chicken? Just less crunchy. ;)

I agree with Yashar!! I have never tasted it but I can guess the taste from teh smell!!! ughhhhhhhhhhhhh really disgusting. Ya know “Syrab Shirdoon” is a common food between traditional people I think!

piffffff peeefffffffff!

Damineh, i have tried zaboon. I had never tasted “kale pache” before ... until last month . It’s really amazing ... lolzzz

In Australia we have the Pie Floater...this is probably the closest thing to the national dish, which goes to show that even though the wines are great, Australian cuisine is sadly still developing :)

The Pie Floater is a meat pie which is drowned in a dish of pea soup, then smothered in tomato sauce/ketchup. Revoltingly tasty if you’re brave enough.

http://www.lard.net/piefloat.html

http://www.lard.net/pie1.html

Depends on your view of meat pies as to whether this is grossness...I don’t think any mass manufactured Australian meat pie actually has any of the meat from any animal in it (well, maybe some equine in there).

Pigs feet, black pudding, callos? The odd things people think would are tasty. Just baffles the mind.

I’m green with nausea, Bleu. . .

I think its a regional/state thing, more popular in South Australia (ha ha, I know there are some SAers on this forum), I’ve only ever had one and it was in SA a few years ago :) I would not like to repeat the exercise...my mum is Dutch and makes the best pea soup, and is horrified that I even had the courage to eat one of these things!

I think the pickled {edit - sp} pigs feet is worse, though!

{edit} sorry, submitted twice

@Denstandigaresan:

Actually, I hear it’s quite crunchy. Little chick bones snapping between your teeth, yum. But maybe a little more squishy. :-) But you’re right, I guess it’s another way of eating poultry. We kill baby chicks anyway by using eggs for brekkie and baking, and we kill the chickens when they’re adults for chicken burgers and KFC– eggs in their embryo stage... it’s all the same difference.

(sorry if I made people lose their lunch :-))

@Anarem: I expected as much with the crunchy chick. ;)

@bleu_argente: I would actually eat that pie floater thing! When I have pies from the local fish and chip shop, I always get mushy peas, which from there resemble lumpy pea soup anyways, and pour it over the top of the pie!! And I’m a tomato ketchup freak, I eat it with almost anything!

@Denstandigaresan: you would be right at home in Australia, then! It is actually quite tasty...I think its the visuals that put people off, especially when you start getting into the pie and the meat sauce starts to spill out...then it looks like...well, use your imagination, its not pretty!
