Get a REAL browser!

I’ve tested Mozilla Firebird today, and WOW! If you all you do with your browser is surf, the GET IT! It kicks IE’s butt all over the place! http://www.mozilla.org. Download the Firebird.

Yep yep yep. Mozilla rules!!! Much much better than IE. Also, its built-in e-mail client is way better than Outlook Express - not to mention that it is not harmful to those stupid e-mail viruses.

yeah I just got it after Thomas advice, and :O:O:O the question is: what the hell is Microsoft doing with all the money they invest in their crappy software??!?!
Getting ready to switch it all to MOzila, it rulez!!!!

@Judith: here’s a possible answer http://www.tor.at/resources/fun_stuff/www.attrition.org/gallery/ms/appro...

A little addition to my comment above: to get the e-mail client and a surprisingly smart html editor, download Mozilla 1.4 from the URL Thomas posted. It’s an installation package that includes all these features, and it’s available in most languages.

why oh why have i been stuck with IE for so long!! Next step: changing to Linux! :P
per_mson said on September 17, 2003 22:32:
Will try out this fantastic browser as well! :-) Thanks for the link Thomas!
But I would think twice before I change to Linux Judith. I´ve worked quite a lot in Unix based systems and I hated every minute of it. Everything is so complicated as soon as you want to use a new feature. Sure, it has improved a LOT, but there´s still a lot of configuration you have to do manually and everything is not supported and blablabla.. All I can say is phew!! I have friends who has tried it as well and they all came to the same conclusion: It is fun for a while, but you get fed up.. ;) My opinion is: Use Linux on a server that should be reliable but not so much used as a desktop computer. Use Windows for normal use. :-)
per_mson said on September 17, 2003 23:10:
Hmmm. question: No offense but what exactly is better with Mozilla? I´ve tried it a bit now and I can´t really notice any difference just like that (more than the looks.. which I actually like IE better). I tried some pages to see if it was quicker to load them, but it is more or less the same. Is the reason to change just that it is not called Microsoft or?!?!
Ramas said on September 18, 2003 05:45:
Mozilla pros in comparison to IE: tabbed browsing (my favourite, can’t live withouth it), mail spam filters (even intelligent auto-detection of spam), “find as you type” mode. There are some nice features, which I don’t use, like popup window blocker and others. And of course: support for standards ! You could create page while referring to web standard specification, not the “will it work in IE” way :)
per_mson said on September 18, 2003 07:16:
@Ramas: Thanks for the explanation. What exactly is “tabbed browsing”? If IE is following the standards or not I personally don´t care so much about. Have never had any problems viewing a page (with Netscape I had a lot of strange things going on though, hihi).

I haven’t tried anything but Firebird, but that browser is amazingly fast compared to my IE. And the pages look exactly the same, at least the ones I surf to. Not like Opera, which isn’t 100%. Strange that your surfing isn’t faster?
per_mson said on September 18, 2003 07:29:
@tev: Yes, if you can feel such a big difference it is really strange. I have ADSL here (around 700k d/l speed) so I should be able to feel it then I think... hmmm... Maybe I have a “turbo edition” of IE?! ;)
Jud (moderator) said on September 18, 2003 07:35:
hm I also feel the pages load a lot faster here :S
per_mson said on September 18, 2003 08:06:
Tried again and they load the pages differently.. Mozilla is a bit faster to show the text, but slower with the pictures. Strange it is that different, hmmm...

I prefer Safari on Mac OS X! Or sometimes Camino (Mozilla-based). >>> very fast, clean design. No dialers! No viruses! No worms! whatever!

Netscape is past...
The great thing in Mozilla browsing is that you don’t need to open 5 browser windows to open 5 websites at the same time, the pages can be accessed by clicking on the appropiate tabs. It’s similar to worksheets in Excel.
Ramas said on September 18, 2003 10:09:
@per_mson: actually, pietROxette explained what is “tabbed browsing”. My favourite way of reading news: go to the news site, and, while scrolling through topics, middle-click on each that you find interesting. After you scroll to the bottom of the main page, you have N tabs opened and prepared for you to read, choose any :)
kiwijazza said on September 18, 2003 10:22:
Am I the only one who thinks Netscape is ridiculously slow? Not so much for browsing, but loading up, etc. I use IE more because of this.
Ramas said on September 18, 2003 10:30:
@kiwijazza: Netscape is slow, if you use 4.x you’ll be in trouble as it doen’t support current standards, if you’re using 6.x or 7.x series - perhaps it’s too “fat” ;) Get Mozilla !
Ramas said on September 18, 2003 11:01:
Actually I’ve been downloading nightly builds even since those times, when Mozilla couldn’t access web page, only what’s on you hard disk, it was really enjoyable to watch the progress and I’m happy it turned into such an outstanding software
Jud (moderator) said on September 18, 2003 11:27:
@Per: about the Linux :)
I know how difficult it can be.. I wanted to use Linux in one of our old PCs, just for the fun of installing it and checking how it works and all. I have wanted to do that for long, but I always forget :S
One of the biggest problems is the software.. but I really hope they keep on developing it and it gets better + better.
Jud (moderator) said on September 18, 2003 11:43:
Forgot to say: i also tried the thunderbird (for mail), it downloaded a mail with an attached 6.6mb file in about 30 secs less than Outlook Express ;) Well, I guess that for cable/adsl users this is not so important.. but for the ones who have a 56kb modem... ;)
harriej said on September 22, 2003 18:46:
I am downloading it now.
We’ll see what it is.
BTW: I do never use Outlook, because I don’t want to have viruses.
At work I use Pegasus Mail and at home I use Eudora.
StupidGirl said on September 17, 2003 17:26:
I’m using the latest version of Opera and I think it’s way better than IE, too.
