Nena's comeback

Don’t you find Nena’s comeback simply amazing ???
She had her first hit in 1982 with “Nur getraümt” (not to mention 1983’s huge worldwide hit “99 Luftballons”) and has continued to record albums ever since.
But since she released that “jubilee” album celebrating her 20 years of existence in pop music, she has scored 3 consecutive Top 10 hits in her native Germany. A rare feat considering her latest Top 10 single was “Feuer und Flamme” way back in... 1985 !!!
Congrats on her and well done.
I just wish Roxette was able to do the same...

I liked her (them) so much in the 80s.
My fave is Rette Mich.
And she made a duet with another fave of mine Kim Wilde :D aaaaahhhh I so want to see that video :(

Storm

it is nur geträumt not nur getraümt

wadda
u know nena in france??? i thought she wuld be only popular in the uk and in germany

Um, she’s/they’re considered a 1-hit wonder in the US, with “99 Luftballons”, but yes, I know they’ve rcorded stuff before and since. Not only that, they collaborated with one of my fave artists, Lisa Dalbello!! She wrote the English lyrics to “99 Red Balloons”, and in 1985, they recorded an English album called “It’s All In The Game”, and all the English lyrics were by Lisa.

and it is “she” not “they”

Nena is a band!!!

Not since 1986! Nena used to be the name of the whole band, but since they split up in 86, Nena’s only the singer Gabriele Kerner (or whatever her last name is nowadays)...

as i said :)

I always thought “Nena” was just the girl, not the entire band - wow - learn something new everyday.

I love “99 Luftballoons” (which really has nothing to do with this conversation, just thought I would share)

this (99 redbaloons) is one of the things i meant at

:P

Nena (the band) were huge in France when they released “99 Luftballons”. That was a big hit (even in France !).
“Rette mich” was released as the follow up but wasn’t as successfull. Then “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” was out and I think it was their final single in France.
Since Nena went solo in the late 80s with “Wunder gescheh’n” none of her albums received french releases but you can occasionally find them on import.

I don’t even think 99 Luftballons is her best song. My fav would have to be: Leuchtturm.

My favourites are :
- “Haus der drei Sonnen” : great single, wonderful melody but sadly flopped (even in Germany)
- “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” : infernally catchy & epic tune. A well-deserved hit.
- “Ich bleib’ im Bett” : light and catchy reggae-like track. Should’ve been a single.
- “Ich häng an’ dir” : Should’ve been a single too.

Ughhhhh...still cant get 99tsich luftballongs out of my head .....Ugh ....They suck ....but thats my opinion ....

hey :D
i’m amazed that so many ppl know songs sung in german :D

@: Aschrum

I know Nena pretty well cause I had this very dear good friend who was heavily into the band (that was around 1984/1985). I only knew “99 Luftballons” at the time but she made me listen to the albums and I was surprised to discover a pretty decent teen pop band. That’s why I know “so much” about them.
You seem to be a German person yourself. How was the band perceived when they were big in the early 80s ? And how is Nena considered nowadays ?

the single with the kim wild or so is considered pretty much
but i am only 17 years old so i cant tell u by my knowledge how she done in the 80s ;)
but i think she was quite popular and rocked the charts..

Nena’s huge success in Germany was over after the band split up. The band’s last album “Eisbrecher” in 1986/87 flopped in comparison to the other albums. 4 years later Nena recorded her first solo album which wasn’t as successful as the band-albums but did quite well. She went on releasing a lot of records for children, some pop albums, had a lot of record company changes due to lacking success and didn’t score any hits for over a decade. She has always been present in Germany, but in fact it was always a bit embarassing for someone to admit he or she liked Nena in the 90s. However nowadays she is back on top in Germany. In October 2002 she released a Greatest Hits album. She re-recorded new versions of all the songs, scored 3 consecutive top 10 singles and the album is still doing well in Germany’s top 10, as well as the Austrian and Swiss charts. Her duet with Kim Wilde is currently No 1 in Austria!!

I recently found out a Nena band member Carlo Karges died last year!

Storm

Carlo Karges died ???
Oh God, you’re right he died : liver disease.
What a sad thing.

One of the reasons I posted this message was of course to celebrate Nena’s comeback but also suggesting that maybe it was possible for Roxette to achieve the same kind of major revival. What do you think ???

Yes, in the 80’s Nena was flippen huge, in the 90’s no one really liked to say that they like Nena. Today, it is quite funny, I asked my little Sister and some of her friends what they think of Nena. (They were surprised when I told them she was around in the early 80’s!) But they all think her music is sooo great, nowadays it is cool to be a Nena Fan in Germany. Funny huh? I must say I adore her music myself, she is a great powerful woman. She is cool and very hip!

i mean... its not the style of music i generally listen to, but i already liked a couple of songs of here in the 90s.
(in the 80s i were to young for that kinda music... in the 80s i listened to rolf zukowski and so *lolz*)

And now she just reached #3 in the German Charts, #1 in the Austria charts and #17 in the Swiss Charts.
Her #3 peak in Germany is her highest chart placing since the original 1985 version of “Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann” 18 years ago !!!
This is simply amazing.
I wish Roxette could make such an amazing comeback...

and Kim Wilde is recording a new album! I´m excited how it sounds. She should find some better song-writers. Her 90´s records are so boring.
*A little bit off-topic but that´s life...*

I agree with the comment on her 90s records.
Still, she sounds as good as she used to in the duet with Nena.
And I’m also amazed that Nena’s is still as good as it used to be in the 80s.

“I’m also amazed that Nena is still as good as it used to be in the 80s.”

it? she is a woman not an it *lolz*

Sorry Aschrum, I meant that I was amazed that Nena’s VOICE is still as good as it used to be in the eighties.
Seems like I typed my message too fast.

Still at #3 this week in Germany.

I like her duet with Kim Wilde :D cool video too!

wow... a moderator... YIKES

any problem with that? ;)

YIKES
no, no problem *kiss*

Roxette should consider recording a song with her. That would probably get them a Top 10 in Germany and most importantly it could sound really good...

Just bought the “Live” DVD and only looked at some concert bits + the videos for the three first singles off “Nena feat. Nena”... Looks pretty good and quite full of nice feats...

Nena’s new single (the 5th to be lifted from her anniversary album) will be “Nur geträumt” and will be released on August 18th in Germany.
Another (fourth) consecutive Top 10 hit for the miss ?

Oh God,
It seems everything went completely wrong for this one.
“Nur geträumt” totally missed it and was unable to peak higher than #79.
Is this the end of the Nena revival ???

No, it’s just bad timing, most radio stations are still playing the last single and basically ignore “Nur geträumt” because of that (reminds me a lot of Anyone, BTW) - I can only remember hearing it on one (!) station from the top of my head! So many people either don’t know there’s a new single or they don’t bother buying it since they already have the album, I guess...

Edit: AAA is still #27 (24) of the Airplay Top50

The new song of Nena and Kim Wilde is on non-stop repeat playing here: A great song!!!

yep she is a cool lady. great song with Kim Wilde
