Most popular pop-duo?
Stormkeeper said on April 1, 2003 19:26:
EMI says Roxette is the biggest selling pop-duo ever but I doubt.
Most succesful pop-duo must be German MODERN TALKING with about 100 million records sold.
Still going strong in German-speaking countries.
spacedog said on April 1, 2003 19:43:
I think Roxette could be bigger than Modern Talking. MT never released anything in the US, so possibly Roxette sold more records.
-Gee- said on April 1, 2003 20:19:
MT NEVER sold more than rox!!! NO WAY!!! O_o
(id’ really doubt the mathematical (?) competence of some chartwriters....whassitsname??? Dyscalcul....sth...? like dyslexia but with maths ;) )
japeke said on April 1, 2003 20:49:
are you more popular when you sell more records? I mean, you have one day fly’s which are popular, and sell about 60 million records. But you have also got groups like roxette which are selling between 40 and 60 million albums, but they got a fanbase which stays big for a loooooong time. that’s what i call popular.....
roxtexanet said on April 1, 2003 21:32:
Maybe so, but Roxette have scored hits and topped sales charts in every major market in the world and just about everywhere in between (except France!), as well as toured the world twice over... so best-selling duo, maybe not, but most popular duo??? Depends on your criteria!
rox-kuryliw said on April 1, 2003 21:42:
who the hell is this MT german group, and i know my music lol. Roxette has sold the most compared to the amount of time given for them compared to other duo’s ?
powerpoplarry said on April 1, 2003 23:48:
Hey, you guys forgot one, HALL + OATES!! They are the biggest duo of the 80s, and sold the most records of any duo, at least in the US, but Roxette beat them worldwide I believe. The Carpenters came close too, biggest pop act in the 70s in the US. I almost by mistake typed Crapenters, haha, thay were mellow, yes, but really cool, the inventors of “SLO-CORE”!! I know Modern Talking were successful, but pretty much never had a US record deal, yet RCA US gave them a whirl. I think they released 1 single here by MT and it bombed, so that was that...

It’s funny how prejudice people get when it comes to their favourite band. We all love Roxette but be realistic man.
Santi yeah... i think Simon and Garfunkel are more popular. It depends where though. I have read in a few books (non-rox related) where they name Roxette as the most popular due. I believe the reason is that they are known in more countries than lets say Simon and Garfunkel or Carpenters or Modern Talking. Actually everyone knows Modern Talking. But oh man their music is bad!!
If you go to East Asia or Middle East, everyone knows Roxette. They love Roxette in South Africa and South America. Doesn’t matter how many records they sell, they are known to be the most popular duo.
But yeah Santi I agree with Simon and Garfunkel. Specially in North America where they look at Simon and Garfunkel as Gods :D.
Majdy said on April 2, 2003 06:07:
well, probably Roxette is the biggest selling duo that work for EMI.
Sascha said on April 2, 2003 06:58:
Well, maybe Modern Talking sold more, but I’d never believe a number out of Dieter Bohlen’s mouth! ;-)
Emil__BG said on April 2, 2003 06:59:
if Per and Marie were born in USA or Germany, maybe they would sells 200 mln... but Roxette wouldn’t be the one that we love
lots of bands in the USA sold more than Roxette, but does it so important??
Roxette “are known in more countries ” ,they dearly loved in more coumtries:-)))
and also for me they embody the pure idea of duo:-))- you know– the man and women..singing together...
Anyone Who Ever Kissed In The Rain,Knows The Whole Meaning :-)))
Santi-can we say that Roxette is the most popular duo made by man and woman or i forget about some duo????
eva_roxer said on April 2, 2003 07:17:
Well, my first thought when I read the subject was “Pet Shop Boys”, but it seems “Modern Talking” are the protagonists here (¿?)
I think even “The Carpenters” have sold more records than “Modern Talking”, but who knows...
Ingo said on April 2, 2003 08:12:
Succesful Pop Duos:
Roxette sold 60 million records
Modern Talking sold 80 million records
Eurythmics sold 45 million records
Pet shop Boys 50 million records
animalkingdom said on April 2, 2003 10:00:
@ Ingo
Did you include single sales from each of the acts?
DaminehGessle said on April 2, 2003 10:01:
Again
Modern Talking has sold more but isn’t as popular as Roxette. I have read in a few books published by different publishers which has all the rock and pop bands included and in roxette section, they call roxette the most popular duo. I can scan the books for you in a month when I move back home.
carbon_boy said on April 2, 2003 11:52:
Jeez, has MT sold a 100mill records?! WOW!
Anyways, what did I wanna say? Oh, doesnt a pop-duo constitute that BOTH the ppl in the duo sing leadvocals? In the case of MT it’s only Thomas that sings lead vox...... so......
Cheers
PS: @Powerpoplarry - who the hell is HALL + OATES?!!!!! LOL! Ive never hear dof them!
Boy_on_the_moon said on April 2, 2003 13:19:
I recently read somewhere that MT sold more than 120 Mio records. Don’t know if it’s true but very surprising.
rox-kuryliw said on April 2, 2003 13:29:
who the hell is modern talking, they have never been in UK charts anyway lol, eurythmics sold alot but not as much as roxette , they have had one US no.1 Roxette 4 US no.1’s

technically mccartney and lenno since they were the chief song writers of the beatles
sonny and cher
elton john and bernie taupin...elton was outsol roxette much times
santi nice call on the carpenters....but they oddly enough havent outsold roxette
Th_Th said on April 2, 2003 13:58:
Modern Talking really sold more than 100 Million records. And if you say, they are not a duo, as Dieter Bohlen never sings the lead, I still think they are a duo, as Dieter writes the songs and Anders (or whatever his name is) sings most leads...
Besides that, I think they had some really great Songs.
I think the best they ever did were:
Brother Loui & Your my heart, your my soul (the new versions though)
Stormkeeper said on April 2, 2003 14:14:
Brother Louie was the only (real) hit in the UK and Canada.
rox-kuryliw:
In ´86 that song was # 4 in the UK.
llounge said on April 2, 2003 20:08:
I cann‘t say anything. But I love both Duos, Roxette and Modern Talking. Both have many great Songs, and I like all this music. I don‘t think, it‘s not important, which one sold more LPs!
animalkingdom said on April 2, 2003 20:28:
Possibly irrelevant but at the 1994 MTV European Music Awards, Tom Jones introduced Roxette:
“MTV is very proud to represent the biggest duo in the world. They have already had 4 no. 1’s in the U.S. and there’s no sign they’re stopping now. They are Roxette!”
I thought that was really cool! :)
@ coyboy
By your standards there’d be an endless amount of partnerships that could outsell Roxette! :(

Hey Carbon, I forgive you for never having heard of Philadelphia-based DARYL HALL + JOHN OATES, they could be just an American phenomenon. Um, their music has been called “rock + soul”, or in other words, blue-eyed soul (white guys doing soul) with an element of powerpop rock. A unique sound, definitely, and Daryl Hall is one of the greatest male singers of the past 30 years, and they are still going, with their new album “Do It For Love” selling strongly, considering it’s on their newly-formed label U-Watch.
Anyhoo, Daryl and John have been a recording duo since 1972. Their first 3 albums were on Atlantic, then they hit their stride on RCA, which they were on for 11 years. Then they moved to Arista for 2 albums, then a couple of smaller labels, the defunct Push through BMG, and now their own U-Watch label. Daryl also has 4 solo albums, 2 on RCA, one on Epic, and one on BMG Japan. John just released his first solo album recently through Beyond. They’ve had a total of almost 40 charting US hits, and 19 charting albums. They’ve had SIX #1 singles in America, the biggest being 1982’s “Maneater”.
Look em up on the net...
Starrox said on April 3, 2003 10:06:
@powerpoplarry: Just checked - except for ” I can’t go for that” (1/82 GB 8) and “Maneater” (10/82 GB 6, 1/83 CH 2) not a single song of theirs made it in the Top 10 in the UK, Germany or Switzerland... that would explain why I hadn’t heard that name before ;-)
popieke said on April 3, 2003 15:25:
Modern Talking and Roxette are my 2 favorites band all time, there know eachother. remember per wrote the song “The sweet hello, the sad goodbye” for Thomas Anders, the leadsinger from Modern Talking. I think Dieter Bohlen and Per Gessle are the greatest songwriters.
Greetz from Belgium, Ludwig.
PiterPam said on April 3, 2003 20:38:
I think that Roxette is bigger than MT. MT release just in Germany i think. And they make not very good music. almost only synthesizer-music.
PP
popieke said on April 4, 2003 04:20:
yeah, that’s right but the new single “tv makes the superstar” is there biggest hit since the comeback in 1998. Maybe with the lot of promotion of Deutschland sucht den superstar.
misteryman00 said on April 4, 2003 04:30:

maybe...savage garden??
Patty said on April 4, 2003 14:44:
Roxette and Modern Talking? Please there’s no comparison. Roxette sound is more magic, a lot of feelings to live listening to their music.
When you listen to Roxette, do it!
Close your eyes and dream away
Let’s rox
Stormkeeper said on April 4, 2003 15:03:
lets say then Roxette is (maybe) most POPULAR duo, and MT is (maybe) MOST SOLD pop-duo! :)
coyboyusa said on April 4, 2003 22:29:
animal wel yeah there are alot of peopel who have outsold roxette....but we al knwo why trhat hapopened now don’t we...because when they weree up for renegotiations they shoudl have stuck with emi svenka for sweden but internationally gone with another label like sony or warner....cbb,,if it had had backing from a real label in the us would have sold over 2 million copies in the usa alone..after all it sold just over 1 million with that mcdonalds promo....hands would have easily sodl a million here and with international exposeure even more....i worry that as successful as they have been...regardless of the amazibng music they record....in the end they are just gonne be rememberd as an 80;s group and that so very pisses me off
coyboyusa said on April 4, 2003 22:30:
oh and as for hall and oates they really werent too successful int he uk.... but they have sold more than rox probably they were huge in the usa for almost a decaDE
Starrox said on April 4, 2003 23:48:
Guess what, I was listening to the radio an hour ago and when I switched stations I heard someone sing something with “maneater”... so I checked the lyrics online and it really was “Maneater” by Hall & Oates! Turns out I’ve known to song for years since it’s played on the radio rather often and still never ever heard someone mentioning the name... *LOL*
mariok said on April 5, 2003 12:06:
ROXETTE IS THE BEST SELLING DUO: Best selling probably includes also income from turing and airplay income. I’m not sure, but I think that modern talking NEVER can reach Roxette when you count all the things together...
Stormkeeper said on April 5, 2003 12:49:
marioh gimme a break...
I know what I´m talking about.
MT has sold more than Rox.
Santi said on April 1, 2003 19:37:
