Football & Soccer & Rugby

Hello! Again an “USA vs. Rest of the world” topic :D But this is funny, I hope :p
I’d like you to tell me why football on the USA is called with that horrible word (4me): “Soccer” :D
I’d like also to know why American Football is called “foot”ball since they don’t use their feet more than very few times in a match :D And using them you even get less points (field goal).
That sport in our countries (or at least a simillar one) is usually known as Rugby. Rugby was invented when someone playing football catch the ball with his hands (I guess he was frustrated :D).
Anyway, it’s funny how this Italian game has come to dominate the world, isn’t it?
Talk about football!!! :DDDD

I love soccer (futebol) so much that almost watched all the matches during that world cup. Wel, i’m brazilian, what can i do!!
Take care soccer fans!

Will someone explain the rules of American football to me?....as I’ve watched it a few times and just couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on! LOL
But then again.....I don’t really understand rugby either ;)
Santi said on March 5, 2003 17:49:
Ohhhhhhh... I think I found out!!! :D
“Soccer” comes from “Football association” (I think). “Association”
Santi said on March 5, 2003 19:04:
I think I understand Amercian football!!!!!!! (not sure :D)
It’s simillar of the conquest of the far West :p They gotta go conquering territory, till the get to the Pacific... then it’s TOUCHDOWN! :D
I think it’s easier to understand than rugby.
You’ve got the ball. Then your army (team) has to go forward 10 yards (I think) and they have 4 chances (downs) to do it. The army (team) is divided in a number of different roles to get that purpose, being the quarterback the “general”. He gives the orders and directs. There are “soldiers” (players) that have to defend him, and there are other soldiers (players) that have to conquer new territory.
The new territory is conquered by catching the ball launched by the general. If they do it right, then they advance, and if they complete the 10 years the 4 chances come again. They need to conquer the “headquarters” of the other team, that is the goal. When they finally get there, it’s a Touchdown, which gives... 6 or 7 points :D
That’s the most important prize, but they can get something “simillar” by kicking the ball and making it go thru the up goal of the other team. That’s a “field goal” and it’s 3 points worth.
When they are defending they have to prevent the other team from getting the 10 yards in 4 downs, and so they win the attack and possession again.
Did I make any sense? :D I just watched European American Football... Barcelona Dragons, Amsterdam Admirals and so on :D
(Rugby is a bit harder, other day if so :D)

I think I just got it! but why the hell do they keep stopping for? how long does a damn game take? how many adverts can you fit into one game? ;)
Santi said on March 5, 2003 19:29:
They stop because it’s not a game like football (real 1st and older football, our one ;)). It’s more like tennis, it’s chances, isolated plays. It can be good or bad, but they have to start again from the same point, so, passing to the quarterback.
The game it’s 60 minutes of real play. So that means it can get veeeeeeery long, since the time they’re stop is not counted. Well, at least is less than baseball... They are in 4 periods of 15 minutes each.
In American TV I think if a sport you can’t put ads in it, they don’t play it :D Remember the problems they had with USA’94 World Fottball championship?? Referees had to wait till the TV “stage managers” told them they could start!!! :O
I guess that’s why they don’t like so much our football there, they just don’t put it on tv because they can not cut it. It’s 45 minutes without interruptions. If you notice most typical american sports have a lot of stops: Basketball is “real play”, American football is like this, Hockey... well, it’s a Canadian sports :D, and Baseball is one big stop when there are some guys standing on a field and once in a while it happens something...
Roxrider_USA said on March 6, 2003 05:54:
The last soccer “futebol” games i watched here in the US weren’t interrupted. Btw, on Fox Sports World, soccer games from all over the world are never stopped for the breaks during the two 45 minutes halves. But yean, basketball, tennis and others are constantly stopped for commercial breaks.
Take care.

American footbal is called GRIDIRON. It has NOTHING to do with soccer. And neither does Rugby. The only similiarity between these sports is that they all use balls - and they dont even look the same!
Santi said on March 6, 2003 23:03:
Oh yeah, football and rugby are or were closely related. They were the very same sport. There are dates about this:
Rugby came when during a football match in 1823 a pupil of the Rugby School caught the ball with his hands to score a goal. His name was W. Webb Ellis. The sport developed until 1870, where it had the rules that still (more or less) run the sport nowadays.
In 1880 in North American USA derived from rugby that “Gridiron” or American “football”.
The basic rules of our football are from 1863.

lost-little-girl stop being ignorant.
Theres a lot of yanks having a go at european people on another site I go on saying “Don’t call it football only american football is worthy of the name!”
It’s the most stupid statement I’ve ever heard from someone. Considering the actually origins and history of football. In every country in europe, soccer is called football. We don’t even watch american football here really. Because rugby is better :)

One of my favourite topics...Football. Some things to say:
1. Soccer must be another invention of US people to take a word only for their use. They call football something that has nothing to do with “foot” or even “ball” because what they use isn’t really a ball. It happens with “American” for example, a word who describe them - but in their minds - because Americans are a lot of people from more than 30 countries.
2. I’ve always heard football comes from England. I don’t know anything about rugby because it isn’t a popular game in Central America.
3. Even when Real Madrid lost everything this year... I love them! Of course I must admit I love them more because David Beckham is playing there ;-) Other teams I like: Arsenal and Inter. Favourite players: every footballer over the world ;-) But specially DAVID BECKHAM, Dennis Bergkamp, Ruud Van Nistelroy, Robert Pires, Figo, Raul, David Trezeguet, etc., etc., etc. ;-p
4. By the way, is it right to use the word “footballer” to name a football player?
5. And finally, we’re going to have a lot of football to enjoy next months: Eurocup, Copa América and Olympic Games.

I have lived in this country for 7 years and I still call it football hahaha. I love the sport. I love kicking objects for some particular reason specially when there is an aim for it. Anyways yeah... I still brag about how awesome FOOTBALL is rather than SOCCER to my fellow Canadians. They don’t seem to get it here in North America, do they???
Yeah Brazil is great, isn’t it? Just the spirit of football. I remember back in Iran, just like England or Brazil or Argentina. People were just CRAZY about the sport. Oh good times.

Roxrider_USA said on March 4, 2003 22:05:
Well, not sure Santi. Probably American football is already called football. So, soccer may have come about. But i’m sure soccer has a meaning that’s closely related to a ball and feet. :-). In Brazil it’s called Futebol. Btw, wasn’t soccer originated in Scotland or in England? Or are you talking about rugby?
Take care, friend. (Btw, i got your email, thanks. Look for the book already :-) ).
