Roxette the lyrics explained
P-p-p-pelle said on March 4, 2003 17:10:
I just wanted to start a topic in which everyone can discuss about Roxette’s lyrics (and the rest) . I’m sure different fans have different opinions, so you never know what comes out. Thus, if you have a query mention it here. The other fans will brainstorm with you. Just like we’ve done some time ago in http://www2.dailyroxette.com/smalltalk/thread.php/5142 I think those results were surprising and I’m looking forward to your collaboration.

This should be a neverending topic; always interesting. I think when we’re going to discuss a certain song we should add all the things we know about it being written (e.g. if we know where the idea of the song came from, where and when exactly was composed, for who, if there is any demo available with some different lines...). I mean all we can say about that song...and of course, the lirix themselves...I propose for the beginning “Call of the wild” (but you may change it if you don’t think is relevant). OK, who’s the first?
david77 said on March 5, 2003 15:29:
I don’t know much about call of the wild but I’d like to know what ispired Per when he wrote fingertips. I really don’t understand anything!

Maybe it’s better if those who want to see some lyrics explained copy/paste them into the box in that way that those who want to discuss about it can see the lyrics immediately.

I think “fingertips” is about a dream - you take a nap in the afternoon and you’re dreaming that you’re swimming having fish around you and so on. The chorus: your girlfriend wakes you up running her fingertips through your hair and you realize that you’ve just had a dream. But she wakes you up only to show you an even better reality - “your life has just begun”...The main idea of the song is that you’re so in love and the reality is soo incredible good - you may have nice dreams about being in a river with fish around you, or you may be awake realizing that everything is perfect...The clue of the song is in Marie’s “Is just a sunny afternoon.../...” I mean it reveals that everything is about mixing the goods of dreaming and of reality in a period of life when you’re so in love...Your girl wakes you up only for beginning another way of “dreaming”. I think is one of Per’s most positive songs...Anyone other oppinion?
david77 said on March 6, 2003 12:06:
Thanks very much for your explanation. It seems a really positive and beautiful thought and a very original idea to show how nice can be being in love with someone.
Sometimes it’s hard to understand the lyrics when you translate them to Spanish and it’s difficult to find out the real sense.

mh, so what about that:

Max-Tob said on March 6, 2003 14:04:
Well, it’s pretty hard for me too...I’m not a native English-speaker, so I am sometimes in real trouble with interpreting Rox lyrics... Does anyone have another oppinion about Fingertips?...Or does anyone know something for sure about this song? (I mean did Per ever say something about it?)
Max-Tob said on March 6, 2003 14:10:
@DeneB
I saw the link and it sounds great, but I think for me is too hard to do it (right now) I have so much to do and I have no real time for widely interpreting Rox songs, though I would like to...So, being here and “throwing” some thoughts about a certain song seems to be easier...I’m not lazy, but very buzy indeed. So, it’s better for me to be here writing only “pieces” of thoughts about certains lines.

Fingertips
(words & music: Per Gessle)
Published by Jimmy Fun Music
You’re sliding down a dream, o yea. Where nights are born in blue, that’s the truth. You’re swimming in a stream, o yea. Fish are jumping to, next to you. Suddenly you notice someone’s at the door, you could swear you’ve been through this all before. Then she runs her fingertips through your hair. Your life has just begun. Her fingers, they are everywhere. You’re floating light like air, leaving the ground and she shines on just like the sun. You’re gazing at the sky, o my. The stars are out tonight, shining bright. You’re waving to a cloud, bye-bye. You’re drowning in the smile of his eyes. Suddenly you feel there’s no time for a deal though a voice tells you it’s for real. And she runs her fingertips through your hair and life has just begun. Her fingers, there and everywhere. You’re floating light like air, leaving the ground. She-she shines on just like the sun. It’s just a sunny afternoon. Somebody’s singing songs of love, child. You love a lazy afternoon once in a while.

Fingertips is indeed a very positive song. It’s about the birth of a daughter.
First you have Per the futher father who is excited about what is going to come. Then as in a shock the childbirth happens like most times at a completely unexpected moment (“Suddenly you notice someone’s at the door”)
Next moments the father is holding the baby and is impressed by its little fingers which reach for his hair.
The second part of the song is about the mother giving birth to the child. She’s lying on her back looking to the ceiling. The childbirth takes a lot of effort and forces and is really painful. when painful things happen people tend to see stars (“You’re gazing at the sky, o my. The stars are out tonight, shining bright”) Her husband is standing next to her encouraging (“You’re drowning in the smile of his eyes.”)
Then suddenly the moment has comen. (“Suddenly you feel there’s no time for a deal”) The baby gets out and screams (“a voice tells you it’s for real”)
At the end of the songs the parents are settled at home again a few days later and enjoying their cute little sign of love singing songs to the baby.(“Somebody’s singing songs of love, child.”)
The baby, sleeping peacefully enjoys. (“You love a lazy afternoon once in a while. “)

Thank you very much, P-p-p-pelle!
Now I understand why the baby appears in the video. The other explanation given is also nice but it wouldn’t explain the new born baby in the video.
And... what about TFGOTM? Do you know what is about?
“The First Girl On The Moon” (3:11)
She was the first girl on the moon
She didn’t compromise
When she took off that cold afternoon
Heading for the northern skies.
I told her I could come
That I could come along.
She was the first girl on the moon
I think I was her only friend
She brought her raygun, an old harpoon
Just in case of accidents.
I told her I could come
That I could come along
But she didn’t let me come along
Wave goodbye
Wave goodbye.
She was the first girl on the moon
Standing tall, flag in hand
She looked around humming a tune
The strangest song known to man.
I told her I could come
That I could come along
But she never let me come along
Wave goodbye. Wave goodbye.
P-p-p-pelle said on March 7, 2003 14:59:
Per said that The first girl on the moon is about a youth friendship between two girls who at a later stage grew apart and although they can contact each other whenever they want they just don’t do it. The distance’s too large. One girls willing to see the other but the other doesn’t want it. (“I told her I could come / That I could come along / But she never let me come along “) The other girl seems to be on the moon.

@ Rox74ever: I’ll try to come up with an answer to your questions a s soon as I find some time.

Hey everyone,
I must say that I really love this topic too. P-p-pelle seems to be a great guy who knows a lot about all the Rox songs.
I myself wonder what ’Keep me waiting’ is about, or ’Knockin’ on every door’. Could it be that ’Keep me waiting’ is about a guy who’s kind of a mafia person?
Speedo
rox74ever said on March 16, 2003 16:40:
@speedo:
well... it does kinda sounds like a mafia guy... but what i really think its trying to SHOW us is.. humm.. how do i explain this.....:
Maybe a guy that makes excuses, and lies to his boss... just to leave early from job and go see her... and even tough he goes through all those hassles, and lies.... SHE STILL COMPLAINS!!!” where in the world have you been!!!”
get it?
=)
erweetiran said on March 16, 2003 16:54:
I think keep me waiting is about a guy who as seen everything and that nothing can impress him because he has seen the weardest thigs and have done the strangest stuff, but still when he saw the girl, she had the power to make an impression on him, if you understand what I am trying to say
rox74ever said on March 17, 2003 04:23:
Maybe... i just think shes a bitchy girl!! that doesnt realize the man she has on her hands...
