Avril Lavigne... Can you figure her out??

I must say, I love her music and think she has got some incredible talent, not just as a singer, but also as a songwriter. I loved to watch her performing her songs on TV, but now I am really confused. Last week I watched the German grammy Award Show, “Echo Verleihung”. Avril won one Award and also presented a song.
After the show, they had a quick interview with Avril. She didn’t smile once, gave really brief and strange answers. She had a look in her face, as if she was really annoyed and sick of being asked just a couple of Questions. Actually, I think she looked as if she just had a huge arguement with someone.
One of the Questions that were asked was: “How do you feel, just having won your first and biggest German Music Award?” The asnwer was:
“Well, I will have to put it into my suitcase and take it home with me...”
That doesn’t make sense to me at all.
Can someone else figure this girl out? After this show I thought, strange girl...
has anyone else seen that show and the brief interview with Avril? What did you think of it? Wasn’t it weird?

I think she’s pretty cool, but,i saw her live on “Top of the pops” a few times, and,on stage, she’s pretty boring, she doesn’t move at all :O

she doesn’t write... her authors receive more money to let her to figure in the credits... she’s fake
her music is nice... but she’s not different than britney or christinna aguilera.... she’s just another product.

” Avril Lavigne is a pop singer feeding off of the new punk trend. Apparently, she (along with all her fans) missed the bulletin notifying those of us whose minds aren’t quite as impressionable that dressing in every article of clothing ever put out by Hot Topic does not make you punk. Clothing should not define a musician’s style. Rather (and here’s a real challenging idea for you), their MUSIC should. Yet, the brainless youth of America continues to eat it up, as they do with anything and everything they’re spoon-fed by the media, top 40 radio, and the sadistic, brainwashing, greedy trend whores better known as MTV executives.
In a recent magazine article, Avril proclaimed, “I don’t write ’Oh-baby-baby’ songs. I’m a skater punk who writes guitar driven rock.” Yet one listen of the record proves otherwise. It is an album of mostly slower, pop-rock tunes that would have felt at home on Mandy Moore’s latest record. Avril can’t seem to understand that, as much as she tries to give off a different image with what she wears, she is a POP singer. Uh-oh, here comes the retort from angry Avril worshippers.”

I love Avril Lavigne’s music. I have her album and I’ve downloaded all her b-sides songs. I also have one single.
My friend also gave me some rare songs she has recorded. Those songs that sounds like a hymn (religious songs) and country songs.
Though I like her songs, I’m not sure if I like her.
It seems to me she is trying to promote this ’bad girl’ image so much that she sometimes ends up looking like a ’try hard’.
But I still love her songs. One of the best.
Santi said on February 22, 2003 20:40:
When I first heard she said she was “punk” I thought it was hard to believe that complicated was a song of hers :| I mean, it’s so much poppy.
And someone who says she’s punk wouldn’t let be done a techno version of her song like the one you can hear on the videogame “FIFA 2003”.
And then, why she doesn’t play guitar if she says she’s so good with the guitar? Maybe she’s just a boaster.
I read that article and yeah, it seems it’s just another commercial masquerade... nice voice, beautiful eyes, good songs (written by professional songwriters/played by professional musicians... not her), and a very very big mouth when it comes to lie...

OK, I hate to say this, but Avril IS the real deal, a total original. Um, those of you who think she is a fake, prefab product, you are SO wrong!! People like you are ripping her up as if she was a puppet, when it is just NOT true!! She DOES write her own songs!! After she writes them, they are given to her team called THE MATRIX to add some last-minute touches, but that’s it!! The songs are basically 90% her!! She writes them on guitar, and has been writing since she was 12!! She’s being herself, and is a great songwriter!! Just because she doesn’t play guitar much live doesn’t mean she can’t PLAY guitar, jeez!! Maybe she feels freer not having a guitar hanging around her neck all night, ever think about that?? Perfect example, my friend Owen McCarthy, lead singer/songwriter/guitarist of awesome local, unsigned NYC band The Everyothers. They used to be a 4-piece, and Owen would play rhythm guitar, and he wrote all the songs. Well, they added a 5th member to the band, who played guitar. This freed up Owen from his live guitar duties so he could prowl the live stage instead, as it felt FREER not to have to play rhythm guitar all the time. Sure, he plays guitar on some songs, but it’s not REQUIRED!! I’m sure, the same with Avril, she could play live IF SHE WANTS, but not having this requirement gives her more FREEDOM in a live setting. Which DOESN’T mean she can’t play guitar at all or that she is a fake. Know what I mean??
OK, guaranteed, if she WASN’T popular, she would be LOVED by the many “trendy” people who love people who don’t make it but should. Yes, you know what I mean, and you know who you are!! In that case, blame MTV and Arista’s promo people for doing a great job, as she IS talented, and deserved her success, as she is not created in a boardroom.
Lastly, she is LABELLED the anti-Britney, just a way to market her to teenagers who need everything served on a plate for them, who can’t think for themselves and just follow others like mindless drones. Avril didn’t ASK for that or doesn’t THINK like that!! Her music should speak for itself, and yes, her music is melodic and poppy, but still rock at the core and she’s true to herself, ARTISTICALLY, which matters first and foremost. I also know this, cuz I discovered her music BEFORE she was all over MTV, so I heard “Let Go” for what it was, and no trends to dictate it. I read about her, and someone I met who worked for her label said she was really great, so I checked her out, and her music knocked me out!! BTW, I’m 35 and accept artsist as they are, not what trends dictate, and Avril IS the real deal. She just happened to click with the public and teenagers, just as the music tide was turning away from prefab teenpop. Avril’s music is honest, and her lyrics happen to speak to the mindset of her peers, teenage girls, whilst also being universal enough to appeal to a 35 year old single guy like me. Oh, and her melodies are great and not derivative of others. I really hate when people give her the shaft really, just because she is popular now. At least she is not dumb and has the talent and tunes to back her up!!
Oh, and Michelle Branch is pretty grand too, but Avril is a little more diversified and a bit more rough around the edges than Michelle.

powerpop thank u sooo much for wrting that!!
avrils album is even better than michelle branch...
an also all avrils b-sides r realy good songs like the song why... just avril an a acoustic guitar... that song is one of my fav from avril...
an the song fallin down from sweet alabama soundtrack is also very good...
avril deserves all the success she is gettin!

I also think she deserves all the success she is getting. I think, if she would be in her end twenties, with the EXACT same music, she would not be slagged off by so many people, as her music really is great and really is rock. It just sounds more rock than anything roxette have ever done for example. And I think, the youth nowadays just love her, because she is the same age as them, basically just one of them....

Hey, I checked out that link, and while well-written, and dissected, I still don’t agree. I emailed recroomjess my defense of Avril. I’m anxious to read her response.
Um, like Avril not getting respect becuz of her age, here’s another example of an artist who put out a KILLER debut album at age 16 or 17 recently. All the songs are great, she co-wrote them all, except for 1 cover song, and some even sound like classics. But, regardless of her musical merit she exhibits on her CD, she will always be slagged. Not really because of her age, but because of her name and who she is...
Who is this artist?? Well, her CD is called “Shut Up”, and the artist?? KELLY OSBOURNE, Ozzy’s daughter!! Teens slag her off cuz of her being trendy and on “The Osbournes”, and her bitching and whining all the time. BUT, the album is KILLER!! It’s like one of my fave bands ever, The Muffs!! But there are similarities to The GoGo’s, Hole, and the Donnas as well, but many trendy teens are too closed-minded and won’t hear Kelly’s great CD for what it is, and that’s the worst!! Avril is suffering from the same backlash!!

First of all, like I’ve said before Avril’s music is one of the best, and I just love her style. I bought and downloaded everything she’s ever done. And yes, I agree she deserves all the success because of her MUSIC.
All we’re saying is, she seems to be a bit of a fake. She says she does things while in fact she doesn’t. She contradicts everything she ever stood for. Her age has got nothing to do why we are criticising her. She also criticises Britney Spears (which I think also have good songs and a very good performer) and I’m just not much of a fan of people who say negative things about others just to make themselves look good. But like I said before I love Avril’s music (I’m a big fan of her music), just not sure about the artist.

Uhm.. at that age when someone is offering you a lot of money, you’re very willing and able to tell the world you had the most terrible youth, were were poor as hell or ate shit last night for that matter.. it’s all a bunch of marketingtricks to get media attention and sympathy from the people..
People in the commercial industry do about anything to make profit.

Well, I like Avril, but how she will evolve artistically is up for grabs, but supposedly she will be going in a harder direction, like a full album of “Losing Grips” and “Unwanteds”, that’s how she wanted the whole “Let Go” CD to sound, hard-edged.
Um, Coyboy, with Michelle, powerpop is her style of songwriting, very melodic and catchy, you gotta problem with good songwriting?????? Shame on you, why are you here on the Roxette boards then?? Same deal, powerpop songwriting!! Plus about half of the songs on “The Spirit Room” she wrote herself, so her raw talent is much more apparent than Avril. Supposedly, Michelle’s next album will be harder-edged too, she plays mostly electric guitar on it, and will have more self-written songs. More personal growth and evolution in her songwriting. This new record comes out June 10th!! If you don’t like her pop style, you don’t like Michelle, period. To me, MORE people should be melodic and powerpoppy like Michelle, it’s a VERY good thing to be like that, the poppier the better, that’s why Per’s writing rules and powerpop is the best kind of music.
