Rock or dancepop - what do you prefer?

Read some comments by people who wanted “more guitars please”... And I myself really do miss all those Soul Deep, Hotblooded and guitar-lines form the erly albums. But obviously they sold enough albums even with dance songs like Stars... (Still - I want those guitars back ;-) More of Maries rockvoice. And more of Pers ballad voice,if I could choose...)

So how do you like Roxette the best? What would you like to hear more of on future albums??

I want them to make New age music :D

*lol*

;lol i would love a real ’rock’ album from roxette.
Marie is a rock chick! have you seen her on stage go !

dance-pop.... i love the rock, but i’m a little hooked on HAND at the moment... another like that would be good...

*runs and hides so she doesn’t get hit over the head with all the guitars everyone else seems to love!*

lol , HAND was the first roxette album i bought, and still is one of my faves. and fave roxette track is TCOTH. both not real rock, never mind lol

dancepop is for children

yeah, HAND was my first too, maybe i’m a little biased, but i do believe (when i close my eyes no one can see me.... oops!) that its a good album even if its not typically roxette

i really like HAND too! nothing against it! but C!B!B! and Tourism are my faves... they’re just more... well... i dunno, they’re just my faves! :)

lol.. i do think HAND is roxette’s experimental album with some great track. and a couple of awful tracks
’ cant put your arms around whats already gone’
juat awful , but different. ;-)

typical comment from Ferdan.
I‘m so much into HAND style. Nothing against rock style of course.

only a ferw songs in HAND are dancepop anyway

god bless all hand fans

i also became a fan with HAND, but i love the rock- and the balladsongs...

but i also loved stars...i can remember myself laying in bed and hearing the song the whole night again and again....*dreaming*

I hate HAND
I hate DANCEPOP
I hate “The Centre Of The Heart”
I hate “Stars”

Dancepop is not Roxette !!!!

GUITARS PLEASE...

All the best
LoneGunman

Whether you like it or not, dance music is Roxette, just as the guitar sound is Roxette, too.

Hate is such a strong word. And life is too short to be so narrow-minded.

I really want something like Kix. That’s the ultimate cross-over between rock and dance with a rox attitude to it......

dancee music is roxette????
...... i think i need a gun

Roxette is what Per and Marie want, not what we want.

exactly.

Roxette is what Per and Marie want, and we want it too:)

No, they aren’t so much what they want.... at least in the Baladas en español and HAND era.
They were what they thought they needed to be... not what they really wanted to be (to succes or whatever)... i gather that from questions and interviews of that time.

go Anarem go. Very good comment.
Peace.

Dance music is Roxette ???? Are you crazy ????

Ferdan, please, I need a gun too !!!

And, really, I HATE dance music !! It´s NOT Roxette.

All the best
LoneGunman

Whatever you call “World acording to Gessle” that is what I like

Marie on piano with maybe a chello and violin, a few back up girls singing....

and Per Gessle on holiday in Spain! ;p

DEFINITELY PUNK...i will be expecting PUNK rock...LMAO

Variety is the spice of life. If artists stayed the same all the time they would come stagnant and irrelevant. U2 wouldn’t have given us “Achtung Baby”, David Bowie would still be Ziggy Stardust and Madonna would have faded into oblivion.

Roxette is dance pop, Roxette is guitars, Roxette is soft folk tunes, Roxette is ballads. That’s the appeal Per and Marie have– that they’re so gosh darn versatile. Spreading one’s wings is what life should be all about; otherwise you might as well live in your parents’ basement and watch X-Files for the rest of your life.

@ Anarem

Variety ? Well, it’s a good thing (like you said, for David Bowie, U2) when you do a new nice/good thing... but Roxette, with this stupid dance thing, only made stupid stupid stupid songs, like “Stars” with that children choir and plastic ducks. Don’t get me wrong, I like to change things sometimes, but I like to change for GOOD things... Changes are not always a good thing.

And about X-Files... I rather be watching it in my parent’s basement than to go out and listen to songs like “Stars”, “The Centre Of The Heart” and “Make My Head Go Pop” !!

I’m a fan since 1989 and NOTHING in this world will make me like this dance-Roxette. And the thing that makes me feel even more sure is that both Per and Marie also don’t like this kind of songs... they said this several times.

All the best
LoneGunman

Fan since 1989??? Then you should remember “Dance away”... !!!
They always made a combination between all catagories of pop. And I would like to hear something like “Crush on you”: Power-guitars, Power-tunes, Power-Voices and a lot of Fun !!! That is what Roxette is all about :-)

JoyRide and C!B!B! amazing stuff I tell you.

Yes I think Roxette should add more GUitars to their songs. BREATHE for instance was a potentially POWER BALLAD if it had Guitars in it like “THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN”.

Even though Marie can’t sing on a very high note now like she did in Hotblooded but.. I guess she CAN churn up some really good stuff if she gets a chance.

Per wake up dude.. get rid of electronic sythns and generators.. lets have some REAL stuff back again.

Also.. how many of you think that musically RUN TO YOU demo was a bit better than RUN TO YOU single???

Zee

Both

“Sleeping in my car” & “Stars” rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rock!
(Remember also She doesn’t live here anymore, besides the songs already mentioned. Although it’s a pity that Marie is not joining on that track.)

@boy on the moon

My thoughts exactly! 75% of Look Sharp is basically synths.

What do you mean that Per and Marie have said that they don’t like these kinds of tunes? When did these interviews occur? 10 years ago? People can change. And whether or not they’ve stated that they don’t like that sort of music, doesn’t mean it hasn’t influenced them in some way.

@ Boy On The Moon - Yeah, cause “Dance Away” is the most pure Roxette essence. “Dance Away” is the reason why EVERYONE here started to love Roxette.

@ Anarem - Per and Marie said that they don’t like techno and dance music in a interview to Mtv Brazil in 1995 (And many times before that). What is more amazing is that they made “Have A Nice Day” (a very techno and dance album) only 4 years after that interview. So, like Ferdan said before... it’s pretty clear that they used those techno and dance beats to try to sound more cool to people that time, to sell more albuns. Probably EMI forced them in some way. But both Per and Marie hate this kind of music... the only way that dance music could influenced them is in a possible plan to comite suicide, cause this kind of music SUCKS !!!

And Anarem, really, go buy a Vengaboys album and leave the Roxette Rock Times alone !!

All the best
LoneGunman

PS: And “Stars” SUCKS !!! BIG TIME !!! Qua qua qua plastic ducks.

I love the Tourism album of all
so I like way it sounds very simle lyrics but powerful music that could melt everyones sound.
but I also love those dangerous stuff like elrctronic sound of guitar.

but I love it to become an acoustic album blended by their voice it will be great!!!

what’s really the difference ?

Rock! rock! rock!

well Per started out as a rocker....and I liked it the way it was then....

@LoneGunman:

“Leave the Roxette Rock times alone”?

You make too many assumptions. I love it when Roxette does pop rock like The Look and Joyride. I also love it when they do dance songs like Stars and Dance Away. I’m more open-minded about their music, while you seem to be so rigid.

Venga Boys? Please. You make the mistake of lumping good dance music with bad. How childish. Why do you “hate” dance-music so much? Bad experience at the dance clubs? Feeling insecure about something?

You assume that *everybody* got hooked on Roxette because of songs like “Dance Away” and songs from the Joyride era– this is not so. A lot of people re-discovered them because of “Wish I Could Fly” and “Stars” because they started playing those songs in the dance clubs.

You also fail to remember is that Marie and Per don’t “hate” dance and techno, they actually think Fatboy Slim and Prodigy are quite good. And that they consider “Have a Nice Day” to be their most experimental album. So stop it with the “probablys” and the assumptions and stick to facts, why don’t you?

I want the ELECTRIC guitars back, for up tempo and for ballads too.

I don’t like Per singing ballads, I only like ATAY and Cooper.

hey Marie said she hated dance music.... in the first half of the 90’s or something.....

@ Ferdan

She really said that? A decade ago? Well, that proves a lot...

BTW, Per ranks Stars as one of his fav Roxette songs ever. Per has also stated that Rox makes music for itself (and also for the ppl who enjoy listening to it). He’s said they make music they themselves would like to listen to...

Let’s stay tuned for more experiments!

Roxette never made dancefloor or techno. Just some great popsongs with dance-elements. Their most synthie-orientated album was Look Sharp! anyway. I love their great range of songs!

Yeah, I agree, I think Roxette have always combined all sorts of Music...
but I do think, that my fav Roxette Music is from songs like:
Cinnamon Street, Keep me waiting, Fingertips ’93, Never is a long time and So far away...
I think an Album completely dedicated into this direction would kick some serious ass with the right promotion.

@Sascha You are right.

@Animalkingdom And we know that Per and Marie both love SIMC. Hope they could as rock songs as it is.

And I also like Stars and TCOTH as my favourites.
Once again they’ll make an album which goes right to my heart.

@Anarem

“I’m more open-minded about their music, while you seem to be so rigid.”

Rigid ? Well, if to be open minded to you I’ll have to listen (and like) songs like “Stars Quack Quack Quack Plastic Ducks”, believe me... I’ll die as an rigid person (Rigid = Only enjoy REAL music). I won’t start to like crappy things just to look more cool to you or to anybody else.

“Venga Boys? Please. You make the mistake of lumping good dance music with bad.”

Yeah, you’re probably right... you DO know a lot about crappy music, or should I call it DANCE music ? To me, it’s all the same crap !

“Why do you “hate” dance-music so much? Bad experience at the dance clubs? Feeling insecure about something?”

Yeah, it was a bad experience at a dance club. My friend went to this dance club and when he listened to “Stars” and that children choir, his head exploded... but you would love it (since you like “Make My Head Go Pop” - blargh) !
Insecure ? I’m only insecure about some Roxette fans musical taste... I thought there were people with a better taste round here.

“A lot of people re-discovered them because of “Wish I Could Fly” and “Stars” because they started playing those songs in the dance clubs.”

Ahahahaha, PLEASE... People re-discovered Roxette with “Stars” ???? Ahahahaha... stop, you’re killing me !!! :)

“You also fail to remember is that Marie and Per don’t “hate” dance and techno, they actually think Fatboy Slim and Prodigy are quite good.”

They do hate... I have this interview taped... They HATE HATE HATE HATE dance music... THAT’s the real FACT !!!

Anyway, don’t worry... I have this awful feeling that “Opportunity Nox” will be another dance music, so you can enjoy it while I’ll listen to some old AND GOOD Roxette songs.

Oh, why you don’t like the “Probablys” ? Actually there’s a wonderfull song named “Probably” by a fantastic band called “Brainpool”... you should listen to this song... ok, it is played with REAL drums, REAL guitars, and don’t have those “adorable” noises, but at least, it’s a good song.

Anarem, beside the fact that I don’t agree with A word that you said, i LOVE to talk with you !!! :)

All the best
LoneGunman.

@Lone Gunman:

Dude, you really need to smell the flowers once in a while. Seriously.

“Rigid ? Well, if to be open minded to you I’ll have to listen (and like) songs like “Stars Quack Quack Quack Plastic Ducks”, believe me... I’ll die as an rigid person (Rigid = Only enjoy REAL music). I won’t start to like crappy things just to look more cool to you or to anybody else.”

Wow, you’re putting a lot of words into my mouth. I’m not forcing you to like things, or to be “cool”, I’m just telling you to be more open-minded. A friend can tell me that country music is the only music there is, but I would disagree and say that it’s just not my cup of tea. That’s it. To say that “it sucks” or “I hate it” is just plain inarticulate, lazy and ignorant. “Hating” a whole genre of music is just mind-boggling to me. You’re closing yourself off to a lot of different things. (And let’s face it, we Roxette fans as a whole, even during the Joyride hey-day, were and are *not* considered cool by the average Joe out there. “Cool”? Please. We don’t give a rat’s ass about being cool.)

“Yeah, you’re probably right... you DO know a lot about crappy music, or should I call it DANCE music ? To me, it’s all the same crap !”

Again, lazy rebuttal. I’m bored now. And get a thesaurus, will you? Saying “crap” over and over again is not a strong argument, it only says a lot about the limited extent of your vocabulary.

“Yeah, it was a bad experience at a dance club. My friend went to this dance club and when he listened to “Stars” and that children choir, his head exploded... but you would love it (since you like “Make My Head Go Pop” - blargh) !
Insecure ? I’m only insecure about some Roxette fans musical taste... I thought there were people with a better taste round here.”

No, I don’t like “Make My Head Go Pop”. I find it too simple and cheesy. Your generalizations are really tired and old. I thought there were actual people around here who can form a solid, concrete argument? Sheesh. It’s like me saying that all people with cheesy X-File-related nicknames still live with their parents and masturbate 100 times a day, but I don’t really know that, do I? It’s all silly assumptions and 99% of the time, they aren’t true. (Oh, and by the way, I prefer the remix version of Stars without the stupid children’s choir.)

“Ahahahaha, PLEASE... People re-discovered Roxette with “Stars” ???? Ahahahaha... stop, you’re killing me !!! :)”

You should come up to Canada and see how much of a following they have here in my neck of the woods, particularly in the gay community, in the last 5 years. But since you don’t know anything about dance clubs (too scared to set foot in one ever since “your friend’s head exploded”, I suppose) you would be totally ignorant of that.

“They do hate... I have this interview taped... They HATE HATE HATE HATE dance music... THAT’s the real FACT !!! “

Again, when was this interview? Ten years ago? Ten years ago I was playing hooky from school and listening to nothing but Roxette and ABBA. I like to think that I’ve broadened my horizons since then. Jazz, rock, classical music, opera.. I love all of that. Even what you call “real music”, like Tom Petty and Springsteen. Same thing with Roxette, who like Fatboy Slim and Prodigy (and who are*gasp* dance music!. And... according to another recent interview, Marie likes Madonna’s “Music” album. *double gasp*)

“Anyway, don’t worry... I have this awful feeling that “Opportunity Nox” will be another dance music, so you can enjoy it while I’ll listen to some old AND GOOD Roxette songs.”

Yup, you do that, while I just enjoy the stuff Per and Marie will give to the fans who *truly* appreciate them, and who don’t want them to live in the past. (Can you imagine them *still* sounding as they did during the Pearls of Passion era? That’s not growth.) We may not like everything they throw at us, but I for one would gladly give them a chance and enjoy them while they’re still making music.

Cheers.

@ Anarem

Wow... you really must LOVE dance music cause you’re getting a little personal now, but it’s ok... let’s go...

“I’m not forcing you to like things, or to be “cool”, I’m just telling you to be more open-minded.”

Again... if to be open minded I will have to listen to dance music and like it... forget it ! I’m an open minded person, I just don’t like dance music, and the worst thing is that Roxette is doing this kind of music ONLY to try to get new fans, what, by the way, they didn’t get... actually they lost several hard core fans because this dance/techno sh*t (since you don’t like the “crap” word).

“To say that “it sucks” or “I hate it” is just plain inarticulate, lazy and ignorant. “Hating” a whole genre of music is just mind-boggling to me.”

No no no... to dislike (since you don’t like the “hate” word) dance music is not a matter of being lazy, inarticulate or ignorant... is a matter of have two EARS and a BRAIN !!!!

“You’re closing yourself off to a lot of different things.”

Plastic ducks ? Children choir ? Can you blame me for being closed to such things ?
Oh, another thing... since I can’t say “crap” anymore... stop with the “bla bla bla CHEESY... bla bla bla dance dance bla bla bla CHEESY”. It sucks... oops, it’s really boring !!! :)

“Your generalizations are really tired and old.”

Oh my, I didn’t know that to say that “Stars” is a dance song is a generalization... I’m so sorry, maybe to say that Roxette is a pop band ALSO is a generalization. Pleeeeeease !!

“It’s like me saying that all people with cheesy X-File-related nicknames still live with their parents and masturbate 100 times a day, but I don’t really know that, do I? “

Ahahahaha... man, you sure have some problem with “The X Files”, it’s not the first time you complain about it. Come on, tell me about it. Maybe you feel like an alien to enjoy that musical stile that Satan created to destroy the earth, what’s it’s name ? Oh, DANCE music !!! Anyway, since I’m a CHEESY (as you LOVE to say) Lone Gunman you probably know that I like ROCK/PUNK... and I’m actually not so rigid about it... try to go to a rock n roll pub singing “I’m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world”... they will break your legs. ( Ooh, masturbation is also cool... I’m sure you do that too !!! )

“You should come up to Canada and see how much of a following they have here in my neck of the woods, particularly in the gay community, in the last 5 years.”

Yeah... because in the last 5 years ALL that Roxette did was “Stars” and because of this ABSOLUTELLY BRILHANT song (sarcasm) all your gay friends now love Roxette. Come on... “Stars” was a huge flop (why I was not surprised about that ?) and to say that people re-discovered Roxette with “Stars” is the most dumb thing I ever heard in my life (And I listened to many other dumb things, like “Stars”)

“Again, when was this interview? Ten years ago?”

It was in 1995... but see, they did “Have A Nice Day” only 4 years after this interview... they changed their minds so fast ? Yeah, right. To answer to this enigma, you don’t need a Fox Mulder, you can solve it with this : E-M-I !!! They wanted to sell more, so they did a “new” sound... thank God it floped big time.
Maybe in the future, when “Salsa” or “Samba” become popular in the whole world we will see Per dancing with two “maracas” in this hands. You will love it, probably.

“And... according to another recent interview, Marie likes Madonna’s “Music” album. *double gasp*”

Well, she should said this... they were doing “Have A Nice Day” that days. And honest, Marie said she loves the Teletubbies once... so...

“Yup, you do that, while I just enjoy the stuff Per and Marie will give to the fans who *truly* appreciate them, and who don’t want them to live in the past.”

Wow wow wow... this you don’t have the right to say... I’m a HUGE Roxette fan, I listen to their music since I was 12 years old... I TRULY like them... what you don’t seem to get is that Roxette “sold their souls” to make more success (playing dance music) and this is very sad. They’re my idols and I lost some of my respect for them when I put “Have A Nice Day” on my stereo and listened to those awful dance songs. But I’m still a fan, and I always will be, cause Per can make great songs, like “A Thing About You”. Don’t you say I don’t appreciate them... I’m sure I like them more than you.

“(Can you imagine them *still* sounding as they did during the Pearls of Passion era? That’s not growth.)”

To Grow ? Let me see, so, for you, to go from “From One Heart To Another” to “Stars” is to grow ? Wow, please, someone shot me !
And by the way... it would be sooooo great if they still sound like “Tourism”, “Crash! Boom! Bang!” or “DBUGTTC” days... oh my, so good !!!

“We may not like everything they throw at us, but I for one would gladly give them a chance and enjoy them while they’re still making music.”

Oh, I sure don’t like everything... I just hope that they stop trying to sound “cool” and “new” and just do what they always did... real pop rock songs.

And dear Anarem... calling me ignorant, cheesy and saying jokes about masturbation, won’t make me respect you more. Grow up !! :)

All the best, from your ROCK friend
LoneGunman

Why do you discuss about musical tastes? It’s useless and you’re not gonna convince each other. As they say in Spain, “for tastes they were made the colours”, or as Romans said: “about tastes there’s nothing written”. Please take this into account, this saying has more than 2000 years... and you both look so childish... (and sorry for saying).

at their age i’d just be glad to be able to get up and dance lol

and stars just gets a bum rap cause it had that god forsaken video if that video was for madonnas ray of light you’dd have dissed it to...you people its about the music not the friggin image!
