“The embodiment of cheesy, disposable pop music, Sweden’s Roxette achieved fame with a series of snappy hits that have no great significance whatsoever. In the tradition of their countrymen Abba, only without the same warmth or grandeur, this enterprising duo of singer Marie Fredriksson and guitarist Per Gessle has mastered the art of catchy, content-free choruses. Bravo!

Per Gessle (b. 1959) and Marie Fredriksson (b. 1958) were both moderate local successes when they joined forces in 1987. Thanks to their gift for snappy pure pop, the rail-thin duo zoomed to the top with its catchy first U.S. single, “The Look,” in 1989. Other fizzy delights, and a few gooey ballads, subsequently scaled the charts over the next few years, among them “Listen To Your Heart,” “Dangerous,” “It Must Have Been Love” (from the noxious feature film Pretty Woman), “Fading Like A Flower (Every Time You Leave)” and the delightful “Joyride.” Beginning with the 1992 Tourism. album, however, they seemed to lose touch with their inner top 40 child, bottoming out with a song for the dreadful Super Mario Brothers movie the next year.

Refreshingly, Fredriksson and Gessle appear to have no illusions about their ultimate worth: Roxette’s greatest-hits album is titled Don’t Bore Us, Get To The Chorus! . They’re probably off digesting the latest trends and plotting a return to high-profile insignificance right now.
