Swede in Aussie Open Men's Final

Congrat’s to Sweden’s Thomas Johansson for making it to the Final against Marat Safin, which will take place tomorrow. I had the good fortune of watching the 4th and 5th sets of Johansson’s 5-set victory over Jiri Novak. It was great tennis but almost more enjoyable was seeing a bunch of fanatical Swedes in the stands going crazy after every point Johansson won. There seemed to be an entire section of them dressed in their blue and yellow garb, painted faces, wigs and signs. It really great to see that kind of patriotism! Here’s hoping Johansson can beat Safin for his first Grand Slam Title!

Na, hope Johansson won’t win. Having an easy group like him it would be a shame if he received the title!

hmmmm.......men matches’ results are in general very unexpected this time in Melb and so is the final....ajjjj, my fave Goran is out :((( but the supporters are always nice to look at :)

When did it get shameful do be lucky? Don´t forget that the players with highest ranking didn´t even make it from the first or second rounds!
Go Thomas!

I don’t say it’s shameful to be lucky, it’s just a little bit strange to stand in the final of one of the top 4 comp without playing against one top 20 player. Since Safin had a harder competition, I wish he will win...

Appearantly the top 20 players weren´t good enough this time.
StillFar said on January 25, 2002 10:14:
that’s why he’s still in the competition..you take my words! But then again, there’s still one, who’ll kick ass!
gyllene_kille said on January 25, 2002 10:21:
No I don´t use your words, I meant that it´s even, then anyone could beat anyone, and even the best could get kicked out by “worse” players. It happens more an more often in tennis, which actually makes it more funny and unpredictable to watch and follow.
StillFar said on January 25, 2002 10:30:
yeah, seeing it that way, maybe you’re right, it makes it more funny and unpredictable. I guess I just miss the old times when the best players played against the toughest competition in a grand slam final and the winner of the match was a true winner..now, an average player is playing against someone near the top. Does it make it more interesting..well, maybe for you as a swede, for me, not really, as I don’t see a great achievement in winning the competition as I used to a while ago.
PerFanatic said on January 25, 2002 12:01:
Well, I’m not Swedish and it’s certainly more interesting for me! I think it would be for a lot of people... you know, it’s always great to root for an underdog. Since my favorite Agassi withdrew from the tourny due to injury, I would really like to see Johansson “shock the world” and beat Safin!
freshold said on January 26, 2002 08:54:
oh boy, Hingis lost again .... she played in so many finals in Melbourne and she can;t win it ... well, next year maybe :) Tomorrow - the men’s final ! Do you think Per will watch it ?
freshold said on January 27, 2002 13:55:
congratulations to Johansson ! one million Australian dollars more for Thomas :) it’s a funny coincidence - Johansson won with Safin who works with Mats Wilander :)))

go Johansson go !! but Safin’s beats are mega strong ouch ...
