Salvation video

I would like to know your opinion about the Salvation video. One of tyhe member of this board told me that this in one of his favourite, while, in my opinion, it is maybe the poorest one. I find it meaningless and without any connection to the song, which is wonderful.

The clip was directed by Anton Corbijn, who is quit famous as shooter.

Let me know.

Alessandro

The video was shoot using old videocameras, so that’s why the image quality is not the best, but that was the idea. I find the video pretty weird, when I see them holding the vegetables and the fish it makes me laugh!

But I think the ending part is the best: “Don’t pass me by” and that door they cross at the same time but don’t get to see each other... Amazing!

I have very inconsistent feelings from this video.

I have Depeche Mode Video singles DVD at home (Corbijn did 99% of DM videos) and all of them looks almost the same. It’ the way Corbijn works. Strange but interesting. I like his blackandwhite videos with very bad quality (like DM videos in the 80’ s) so I can imagine this kind of video for Roxette, Reveal for example.

I like Corbijn’s idea behind “Stars”, but I never liked “Salvation” video. I couldn’t believe my eyes the first time I watched it! I think the song deserved a more classic video, not so experimental. I don’t get what’s the meaning of the pumpkin and the fish Marie and Per are holding. By the way, Per’s hair was a total mess, I don’t like that blond/dark mixture, if you know what I mean.

So weird and sometimes (a lot of “sometimes”) meaningless
Salvation is one of my favourites roxettes ones, and the video is not...
PD:Today i still imagining what would be the video of Beutifull things (what a fabulous song)

Well, there were lots of discussions about the video for Salvation and lots of interpretations of the fish and pumpkins in the video.
It’s not my favourite video. I like the beginning and the end of the video most.

First, I love the Slavation video because I think that esthetically it‘s outstanding. I just love that super-8-ish style, sooo lovely old fashioned. It reminds me of the vacations I spent in Italy (and, nice coincidence, that‘s where the video was shot - Portofino, if I‘m right) with my parents when I was a child, and where we used to do super-8-videos, too.

And I love the plot:
The perfect holidays. The couple-in-love takes a plane to a wonderful location. There, they have the best weather ever, the same no one except them is at the beach. Perfect, but they can‘t apreciate it. They get the most delicious food (fish and fruit in their hands) but can‘t enjoy it. The have drinks in wonderful bars with fantastic views over the bay but don‘t know what to talk about. The whole thing is perfect, only one thing doesn‘t fit: even though they try so hard to let everything be perfect, they just don‘t know what to do with each other.

Then, finally, there is Salvation: both choose seperate doors and their feet take different directions.

Of course this doesn‘t mach the lyrics. And it leads to the nice question, if maybe the singer of the song isn‘t totally honest, and maybe the guy who brought her salvation could do that only because she was lying to herself.

I like this strange-weird athmosphere that says something isn‘t right at all. Nostalgia and hopelessness in paradise. Yeay!

Btw, even STARS by Corbijn is great...

Wow! You’ve found an explanation for Salvation video! Congratulations!!

I agree the explanation for salvation video except one thing : the pumking. You can see Marie singing “I gave you my body...” when she is holding it. So, the pumpking is a “metaphor” (I don’t know if it’s corretly written in english, sorry...) of a woman body. At least this is my explanation. But I can’t explain the fishes... ! lol

Haven‘t watched the video for a while, but yes, seems to make sense. Maybe the fish is a metaphor for the male body then ;-)

@veneziano: I really like your plot description. This agrees pretty much with my own thoughts. :-D
But concerning the metaphors... well... no ideas from my side... *rolleyes*

I really love this video. I mean, it´s totally different to the rest of rox videos. I find it original, funny and peculiar. I like the image of Per&Marie with a fish and a ¿pumpkin?... and I also like the way Marie&Per look in it (clothes, hairdress,...) Nice song, nice video.

It’s one of my favourite videos. The expressions on their faces are just great.

... not bad for a supposed dead forum! Thank you guys for sharing your thoughts about this video, which has always been something unclear in roxette’s stuff. As I told you, I have always thought at it as a meaningless sum of images shooted in Italy (was it Portofino or Naples?). I have never thought at that door as something that bring salvation, or at a vegetable as a women’s body. Anyway, I think that it might work. To be honest the song is such a masterpiece that even a standing image of a fading flower could have been good.

This is the lyrics-matching story/meaning as I see it:

2 people are right next to each other, they complete each other perfectly (Pers pumpkin piece exactly fits Maries piece). They walk right next to each other (this mirror liked door) but they don’t realize that they’re made for each other.

“My eyes couldn’t see....” => this line and many more fit my story ;-)

“some will get broken others will get lucky like me meeting you don’t pass me by” => this is what could have happened like in the video where they don’t find each other, or maybe is the situation before they realize like in the song.

Sounds plausible too, indead. Gonna put (one of the) video-DVDs in the player... Somebody got Corbijns email?? Maybe he‘d like to share his thoughts, too *lol*

nice style but the video had so little to do with the song, wayne isham should have shot the video, it would have been so good

one of my favorite songs from that album
Video is on the fine line from pleasure to pain, good and very bad.
