Market place NOT an advertising board for eBay

The idea with TDR’s Market Place is NOT for you to put stuff on eBay and then add the URL here. Please stop that.

So what is the idea? Oh yes... I think the idea is that this Market Place is to allow for direct transactions between TDR subscribers, and not “auctions” open to the general public (eBay and the like).

If you have, for example, copies of Tara magazine to sell... let us know HERE, so that we can contact you directly to purchase one.

I agree with that. Give a chance to people like me, that I can’t buy anything on eBay cause I am not able to open an account there (a credit card is necessary, apparently).

But is it okay that we post Ebay Roxette & Related Auctions in the regular Roxette section where we talk about Marie Fredriksson, Per Gessle, Gyllene Tider, Roxette, The Lonely Boys/Related ?

Fair enough.

Earth, when we say “Roxette” all their previous and related bands from the early days are included. No need to say Roxette/Per Gessle/Marie Fredriksson/Gyllene Tider/The Lonely Boys/Strul/MaMas Barn/Grape Rock/Peter Pop & The Helicopters and Related, LOL

eBay is ok, but just consider not all the people has the chance to buy there. It’s better if you can deal with other fans directly, to buy/sell/trade material. I used ebay a couple of times in the past, but for some reason the sellers tend to inflate the shipment cost. For exaple, you pay 7 euros for shipment, and when you get the parcel and you look at the stamps it says... the seller spent 4.50 euros for shipment. It happened to many times (specially when I got some bargains), and really drives me crazy.

Well here I am again and I am going to express my opinion but I really don’t see the point in bringing in this as a rule when people who sell on eBay have been using the Market Place to gain interest in there items since the Market Place was put in place here at TDR.

Many sellers (me included) prefer eBay to make sales as our feedback rating at eBay normally makes it known that we have a good reputation and are reliable sellers. Also the beauty of Paypal as well means that if anything goes wrong people can normally get a refund.

On private sales this is not the case. Many people here have been ripped off by people claiming to sell something, parting with money and not receiving goods yet TDR are encouraging people to do it this way. It’s not the way I prefer to work; it’s very rare I offer private sales on items despite the amount of times I have been asked.

Pretty much anyone can get an eBay account; it’s very easy to do these days!

I wanted to talk about the shipment costs. You have to take into consideration that your not only paying for the cost of the posting by checking the stamp stuck on the parcel. eBay states “Posting & Packing” costs. You need to take into account the packing materials used for your parcel as well. Cost of Jiffy Bag, Box, Bubble Wrap, Brown Tape, Pens used to write your address and also the cost of printing out any receipts that are included in your parcel. Many years ago people used to add extra for Paypal charges but eBay don’t allow this now so most sellers add a little extra in the postage costs to cover this!

I’ve sold on eBay for almost 4 years now and have done many sales with people here at TDR and I don’t overcharge on postage costs. In the past I have lost out on postage charges, especially on bigger items! There have been a couple of occasions where I have overcharged and because I am so honest I have refunded people back the difference! Of course not all sellers are like that!

The thing what people have to remember about eBay is that most sellers clearly state there “Postage & Packing” costs in the item description and it’s up to you as the buyer to determine if it’s really worth buying and if you really want to spend so much on postage for that bargain! There is little point in moaning about it when the parcel arrives that you have been overcharged if you knew the postage cost before you placed a bid for the item!

Personally the amount of rules around here now makes TDR a very uncomfortable place to be for many people, maybe that’s why a lot of the regular users are disappearing and there is little action seen on these forums anymore.

Of course this is just my opinion, I emailed Lars with my comments on this new rule yesterday and I have received a reply from him. However I still felt the need to just post my opinion here.

yes of course all other costs like envelope and whatever else are included in the shipping costs.. it is for the buyer to pay for these costs, why should the seller pay for this?? :S

Besides that, I still see the same faces on TDR, and for what I’ve chatted with people, I think the new rules are welcome because most people prefer TDR to be alive than closed down :)

I like these new rules. Im one of the people who does not have access to Ebay. And I have traded with a lot of people here in TDR and I have never been ripped.

Ally77, let me ask how much cost a padded envelope. Most of the times I bought on eBay, I’ve got the material in a padded envelope only. Result: totally destroyed jewel cases. Sometimes, even the back insert was demaged by the broken plastic. And last but no least, a couple of times I received re-used envelopes. I mean the original sender/reciever was covered with black marker. I don’t wanna say that’s the average behaviour for all the sellers. But I know it have not happened to me only. It’s OK if you wanna re-use an envelope (I like recycling), but don’t overcharge 3 euros just for nothing. After all, I don’t think a jiffy is that expensive to double the shipment costs.

Further consideration has been given to this issue... and we at TDR agree that eBay (and other such auction sites) serve a purpose. The things we object to do not necessarily prohibit someone from letting TDR’s readers know that they have items for sale on eBay.

What we ask is this: Just like everywhere else on SmallTalk, the Subject of new discussion topic MUST clearly and simply indicate what is for sale, and not contain “promotional fluff.”

“Look at this GREAT eBay item!!” for example would NOT be allowed, whereas “eBay auction: Roxette Times Square t-shirt” would be.

We would also ask that some self-constraint be shown... and that the privilige of posting here not be abused by a seller coming back to “bump” his/her post back up to the top (or having a friend post to the thread for this purpose).

Thanks for your input, and thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Of all the CD’s I’ve sold on eBay I’ve not had any feedback to say my items arrived damaged. Normally I would pack using a Jiffy Bag + use additional bubble wrap inside for added protection. Of course not all sellers do this, I too have received many items that have arrived in packaging not suitable for there needs or re-used. I don’t think I have ever re-used packing materials or Jiffy Bags myself in the three years I have sold stuff! A padded envelope here in the UK for a CD would cost around 50p from the post office but I normally buy in bulk from a stationary store usually around 20 or so at a time. There are the odd occasions I would have to buy one from a post office if I had run out and so not to delay sending items to someone!

But of course it stills comes down to if the postage costs are clearly displayed before you bid for the item then you can’t argue when it arrives. The buyer needs to think is it really worth paying that for the postage?

I do agree there are a lot of sellers who do overcharge postage cost I’ve had a few in my time and even when I have bid for the item I have thought is it worth paying all that postage. Over the years many items I have turned down on eBay because of inflation on postage!

@ Lars

That sound like a better rule all around! Well done, I am happy with that!

I don’t think it’s right to say that people cannot re-use the packaging. If you manage to open the bubbly envelope carefully and then glue the white sheet of paper on top, write a new address and ship it to somebody else, I believe it’s a good thing to do. For the sake of saving the paper and materials, being more nature-friendly. How many of you have actually separated the bubbles from the paper and recycled it, huh? I do it every time. But I have re-used the packaging as well. So, tell me what’s wrong with re-using?

Nothing wrong in re-using it if the seller doesn’t charge the cost of the envelope in the invoice. If that helps to make the shipment a bit cheaper, welcome then!

I re-use bubble-envelopes, couldn’t imagine myself throwing them just like that if the envelope is still usable O_o

I don’t think this means a seller is “bad” - as long as the package is OK and protecting the item inside :)

Back to the topic.

I see the point of people not wanting to sell through the forum but paying a bit extra as insurance and putting the item on eBay. Do the sellers have the special ways to insure the transaction or at least make it more secure?
For me, for example, I ended up having 2 Maxis of famous Swedish Dangerous (1363412) with 4 live tracks, and I am feeling really uncomfortable about selling one of them through the forum to the person I do not know or do not have feedback or any info about.
So, the sellers, what are your tactics?

Ebay offers protection for sellers and customers in case we use paypal.
It may be simple, you want to sell that Dangerous single to one person,
just sell it as “Raxet - Dongeraus” (or whatever, this is when you don’t want to sell it
to another person) and you let the customer know the link.

What kind of protection does the seller need if sellers never ship the item until the payment/money is received? That’s what I don’t understand.

maybe it’s just me but whne I first got a computer places liek ebay were a godsend for people that don’t have the ability to import alot fo rox related material. Why is it such a problem that epopel post links to their rox related ebay auctions...by definiton your more protected in an ebay auction then sending anyone on here an international money order or money gram. But maybe that’s just me.

Well, for you as a seller, it’s important to suggest a good price for shipping as well. Let’s say you have received the money and sent an item. The buyer gets the item and claims that he hasn’t received it and wants his money back. Obviously you could do is - “the sign for delivery” confirmation and/or registered mail and/or insured one. However that adds some cost to the shipping that some people will not like.
