Roxette signs new U.S. deal with Capitol Records
Written by Lars-Erik_Olson on October 24, 2006 to The Daily Roxette.
NEW YORK - Capitol Records, part of the EMI group, will be releasing Roxette material in the United States this holiday season. In an exclusive interview with The Daily Roxette that appears on our Features page, Per provides details about this new U.S. record deal and opens the door even wider to the possibility of new Roxette music in the near future.
Per speaks candidly with TDR News Editor Thomas Evensson about a number of other topics of interest to our readers in this interview, including Per’s take on life: “I like to keep my head busy,” he says.
Along with this exclusive interview, you’ll also find a first-person account of the appearance of Roxette at Bravo Magazine’s gala anniversary event in Hamburg, Germany this past weekend. Written by TDR reporter Kirsten Ohlwein, the story takes you behind the scenes into the press room, where it was obvious that Roxette’s perfomance was the most anticipated event of the evening.

people have to remember, it was pers decision to withold alll rox releases from dont bore us on from emi capitol usa since he felt the management there had no interest in promoting rox material, the fact he feels comfortable with the current management team in the usa speaks alot about whats going on with emi, but i do get worried how anytthing they put out here is going to be recieved if its only per doin the promotion, most kids will be like who’s the old guy, not to be offensive but thats kids today

Wow. Who would have imagined that a 20th anniversary celebration would lead to a U.S. deal with Capitol Records? I was really hoping that Roxette would strike a deal with Capitol in America, considering they are with EMI/Capitol internationally and I’m quite pleased with the material released on the label recently. After the quiet release of ’The Ballad Hits’ back in 2003 on Capitol I’m not really surprised at all by this new deal with the label. It only made sense.
Considering their massive chart sucess from ’89 - ’91 in the U.S. I see no reason why Capitol would not have been interested in a greatest hits package for the duo. Just look at all the recent successful hits packages released by the label in the past year.
Hopefully this new U.S. deal will also lead to remasters and reissues of their albums. It’s just a shame that the U.S. has had to go without so much material from the duo for so many years – I’m mostly referring to the ’Have A Nice Day’ and ’Room Service’ albums that never saw the light of day in the States. Well, hopefully this new deal will lead to new material as well. :)
As for EMI America not wanting to release Roxette material, I’m not really surprised. After the horrible handling of the ’Crash! Boom! Bang!’ project they probably didn’t even want to bother with the ’95 hits package. Didn’t I read somewhere that EMI USA wanted Per and Marie to spend a lot of time in the States promoting and they didn’t agree to it?

I couldn’t agree more, that is why according to today’s American music scene I find ir hard to believe Roxette can shine through again. America (and I hope this does not offend you Cowboy as you’re an American) and I say this from an outsider point of view is that this country never seemed to be interested in knowing what’s more than music outside of it. Especially today where rnb and hiphop are king and queen’s there and musicians so called musicians are constantly in catfights against each other for the music they do. Seeing Roxette in the middle of that does not make me happy. What i trully and sincerly wish is for the fans there old time fans to get those releases and ejoy them despite the passing of time and knowing how far away it has gone by now but at least knowing that: it was worth back then it’s still worth loving it today. Now that’s when I can one a true fan ... :) Enjoy folks! :)

we;ll i do speak from experience that alot of the older fans here in the states became bitter after what happend around cbb and don’t bore us and pers rather flippant attitued towards the states, it wasn’t just emi usa sucks it was also the oh who cares if we sell records in the states atttitued, it was liek says so what you bought my album and you’re a fan . it’s not the music scene here thats the problem, if thats the case savage garden never would have been big here, peopel like rob thomas and blue october wouldn’t be big here, theres still a huge pop music market in the states but u have to be willing to put a bit into promotion and u have to know what areas of the country still listen to pop music, especially the mid west and west coast. the simple fact is neither of them are up to long promotion stints, i imagine even if there is a new album we won’t see it here in the states after the rather bland reaction this 2nd hits package will undoubtedly recieve

I think that certainly was the case, and you can kind of understand it from their point of view. Why invest a lot of money in a group who aren’t willing to spend the necessary time promoting their music. It is certainly possible that Roxette’s success could have been prolonged if they were willing to do the promotion. Having said that, I can also totally understand it from Per and Marie’s point of few. By that time they Marie had a family (and Per was also soon to become a father). They had different priorities which is totally understandable.

It appears that there’s already a placeholder for a Roxette artist page at capitolrecords.com. Let’s hope that this is not a lemon like Edel Records.
