Well loved from paris to berlin and loved there album, So when i saw that they have done a cover of the laura branigan hit self control i was so cross ( love that song, and generally hate cover versions ) BUT once i saw the infernal vid which i think is very cool btw . I have to say i like the song her voice suits it well but brings it up to date with a retro feel .

Pretty cool

Isn’t the original from RAF? I have it on 45r.p.m. and it’s from 1982 or 1984....

Raf’s (or Raff’s) original was Fantastic! from around 1984 i think Later Laura Branigan covered it, and there were dozens and dozens more subsequent covers.

but the original Italo disco by Raf is the best for me, romantic and danceable (that whole album was great too) :-)

Meh.

I dunno. This song conjures up deep dark images for me, people in robes and masks, on the cobbled streets of old europe, mystery, opulence, sheer imagination, sex and emotion....something out of Anne Rice’s Vampires books.

I dunno. If it was me, I’d make the video differently.

Infernal is ok...she can definitely sing.

In retrospect, I love the black inky effect :D

Ohh love the black ink flowing out from that guy when he falls to the floor!

i love the effects very creepy , i didnt know Laura Branigan covered it, i guess u learn something new everyday.

@Invisible_man ...so you’ve heard of RAF in the US too??? That’s amazing. If he was so successfull I wonder why he gave up singing in English. He has many good Italian songs but usually they appeal only to Italians and (for some strange reason) to Germans!

He was never popular in US. Never even released anything here.

From great Enlgish-speaking artists I would also like to mention Gazebo (I like chopin and many other great songs)

Now I live in US, but I used to live in former Soviet Union in the 80’s.

Many Italian Pop performers were huge back than, like Toto Cutugno, Pupo, Umberto Tozzi, Richi & Poveri, Al Bano, Adriano Celentano... and some others that I can’t remember.

Also Joe Dassin who sang in French, but had music written by Toto Cutugno....beautiful music if you ask me.

From today’s muisc, I think Nek is pretty good, but i haven’t been following much Italian pop lately.

By the way Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” was also a cover of Italian song by Umberto Tozzi in this case, but with English lyrics. Original is great :-)

Now I understand why last year when I was having a sauna at a hotel in Estonia a whole group of Kazakhs started singing ’Lasciatemi cantare’ when I told them I came from Italy *lol*...

L’Italiano, I love that song, among many others.
Were any of those artists that I mentioned popular in home-country? Do they still get some radio play? I know for a fact that they are still tremendously popular in Eastern Europe :-)

Sometimes you might hear a new song popping out but nothing big really. I can’t say they are popular to the new generation, you mostly find their albums in supermarkets. I guess it’s quite normal also because we have a lot of many new artists. The only one who is always up-to-date is Adriano Celentano. Now it’s all about Laura Pausini, Eros Ramazzotti, Tiziano Ferro, Cesare Cremonini, Subsonica and more...
Do you know the song ’Sarà perché ti amo’ by Ricchi e Poveri? If you and you send me your e-mail I’ll send you an MP3 and you won’t believe your ears...

About the topic... I also like ’Self control’ and I’m curious now to hear the new versions.

rox lad just click on the link in my first posting :-D

Italian gems from “The Other” male-female duo... songs are as beutiful as Romina Power :)

The Germans have great music taste, I wish this was popular in US.

Did you know that Laura died in 2004? :(

Anyway, a long time ago I did ’covers’ show and dig up the info about Raff and Laura. As far as I can remember they seem to both be original (like sold to both of them) and I think they even topped some chart at the same time (might be German but I’m not sure...). I love Italo disco music! All all these remixes that are bringing them back now. :)

*waving at Roxlad* :D
