Brent has some good points.
You should really consider visiting Queensland. Also Tasmania.
And three months really probably isn’t long enough to tour Australia, but you need three months in NZ just for all the extreme stuff you can do there!

Sounds amazing Natasha.....
I have a great friend at work who is 52 years old and is leaving work for 12 months in April to travel for a year... 5 months in the USA, 4 months in Australia and NZ and 2 months in Asia....
I really admire her for doing this, would make a fantastic experience....
By the way I read your profile and its great to see you both, look forward to meeting you in London! :)

Hi,
Some suggestions:
To spend equal time in NZ and Australia is probably unwise ... Australia is a much bigger country and without wanting to be too biased, there is a lot more to do and see in Australia. You mention a fondness for animals - Australia wins hands down there. New Zealand has the Kiwi and not much else.
Being gay you may be interested in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras that takes place during February http://www.mardigras.org.au/ it isn’t celebrated like it used to be, but it is still an experience - although if i remember correctly, you will stay be some weeks/months away from arriving in sydney ... i got muddled regarding your dates.
The east coast (Sydney to the Great Barrier Reef — 3000 kilometres roughly I think) is a really really popular journey for many travellers and is missing from your itinerary which you may wish to reconsider.
Great place in Sydney is Newtown. Some people have compared it to Camden Town (??) in London, but having never been to Camden I can’t say how true that is. Anyway, it is a great inner city spot.

You’re both still young enough to obtain a working holiday maker visa ???? Maybe you will arrive in Sydney, work for a bit to try to save money and fall in love with the city and spend the rest of your trip here like many British backpackers I have known.
I’m sure you both will a brillant time.

Debs cant get a working visa as she is on a portuguese / south africa passport - otherwise we would go for 2 years and see every single part of it! Thats why we only doing 3 months in each as thats the maximum time allowed for a holiday. We know we will miss Sydney Mardi Gras but we will be returning to do the north coast coming down through the barrier reef oN our next visit out there.
The reason we have chosen the route we have is cos we know people in the these areas so it makes it much easier. We are now looking into moving over there although very difficult unless you have the right skills! The extreme sports in NZ is going to be the best ever! Looking forward to Cape Town though too!

3 months in NZ! You will see every inch of the place!!! Do you have a tour booked for that whole time??? I am reluctant to agree with Brent but you should probably spend more time in Oz - its a much bigger country with cuter animals!
I live in Wellington (the capital city), its a great place if you are into the arts (lots of galleries, theatre, plays, music/bands). Its a beautiful city although very small. But it is very gay friendly, there are a few more gay bars/cafes opening up soon.
Most travellers spend only a night here on their way to the south island, which has NZ’s best scenery.
Hope you have a great time. Email me if you would like to know more, or if you decide to stay in Wellington.
P.S your couch surfing profile link doesnt work.

couch surfing crashed a while back and some of the profiles were lost - however we managed to retireve ours so the new link is above.
we will now be driving from Joburg down to Cape Town and then back via the Garden Route...probably about 2 weeks... we will also be driving up north of joburg to one of the game reserves to see the animals and also through to Sun City.
we land in Perth Australia a few days before Australia Day - we have found a lovely couple to stay with on couch surfing who are going to take us on their boat over to Rottnest Island...stay there 2 weeks then fly up to Alice Springs - to do a 3day tour and hopefully stay with a lady who is a lawyer to the aboriginees...will be very cool...spend 5 days there then we fly down to Adeilade for about 4 weeks - staying with a cs’er who stayed with us in london - she will be 6 months pregnant when we arrive. we will hire a wicked campervan and take 7 days touring including about 3 dyas on Kangaroo Island...
then we onto the Oz Experience which is a hop on/ hop off bus that will take us through to Sydney via Melbourne. We will probably stay about 2 months in melbourne as there so many people to stay with....once we hit sydney we will hire a campervan for a week and do the Blue Mountains.
then we fly to New Zealand for 3 months - weve hired a Spaceship land cruiser to sleep in - and we will do every inch of both islands.
then back to south africa for a month before heading home to london sometime in october 2007!
thats the plans in a nutshell with so much inbetween....
getting excited now as not long to go before we get on that flight !!!!!

hey all,
my girlfriend (debs) and i will be taking a year off work to go travelling at the end of this year.
we will be spending 3 months in south africa then 3 months in australia then a further 3 months in new zealand..

We plan to fly into Perth first for a week or so then fly to Alice Springs to see Ayers Rock etc for a handful of days. Then fly down to Adelaide to stay for a while taking in Kangaroo Island whilst down south. The Oz Coach/Bus Experience is then going to take us a month or two along the coast thru to Sydney via Melbourne etc.
From Sydney fly over to Auckland - where we will do the Kiwi coach/bus Experience for 3 months taking in the whole of both islands....hopefully see nature in all its beauty and see so many gorgeous animals...wanna bungy jump white water raft and tandem skydive as well as some serious snowboarding..wanna do the fox glacier ooohh the list could go on...
so who will be over there between January and July 2007. We could meet up for a drink somewhere or you could be a part of the couch surfing experience see http://www.couchsurfing.com/
Or you could even point out to us by email some cool local history or hangouts for us to check out in your area...
