your reaction when you first heard WICF

it was january 4th 1999 and suddenly this brand-new rox song started to be airplayed on the radio. i couldn´t believe it, it was marie´s voice again after 5 years of silence. in addition it sounded so fresh, those strings were incredible and it resembled a slow dance tune. so many differences in just one rox song. of course, when i heard happy together from the single it was even more different and when i heard HAND i thought that was not roxette at all. but i loved it anyway! what do you think? how was your experience at that time?

I found it death boring and I didn’t notice it was actually Roxette. I remember exactly where I heard it for the first time, it was one morning on the car, and that was what I thought!! :DD
Majdy said on December 14, 2005 21:57:
I was very happy when I first hear that, because I was dying to hear that for days. also, it’s been years since I last heard new roxette song.

me too,and i love HAND,regardless there are some dancy produced songs I don’t like so much, but I adore everything about Per and Marie...songs like I was so lucky,Salvation... are really beautiful to me..

Fantastic song... in such a awful album... HAND sucks big time !!! >:( But WICF is a masterpiece.

At first I only knew that this song exsists and that it’s a new single. So I begged the very best radio station back then and the guy who was constantly promoting new singles to play it. And he did. I was SO happy to hear Roxette again but the song wasn’t good as much as I expected it to be...

I thought WICF was amazing when I first heard it. Played it over and over again. The album came out, and at first I loved it, then got bored of it so didn’t listen to it for ages. I quite like it again now though.

i heard it yesterday on ther radion and i thought that this was a typical “good old” rox song, because WICF is absolutely timeless and not like TCOTH already “old” after just a couple of years.
however, back in 1999 i expected an uptempo song but i was NOT dissapointed about wish i could fly ... it is (still) the best ballad roxette ever released ... i was more dissapointed about the HAND album because nothing sounded as groovy and timeless as WICF ... maybe that’s the reasion why it is the only song written in white on the back of the album artwork ;) ... for me, HAND is now pretty good but the production of the songs is a bit too “glued together” ... the instruments (or computer sounds) can’t breath... but in wish i could fly, the sounds and the voices have air and space, i hope you know what i mean. as i am a graphic designer, i could compare it to a design without white space ... in this case, the design elements could be great but if there is no empty space, those graphic or typography elements can’t take effect.
i reckon WICF and SIMC are the best rox songs ever.

You mean like the backside of HAND? ;-)
I heard WICF for the first time on the radio in my car, got goosepumps instantly! Great song!

I still remember vividly they first time i listened to it.
The first listen it almost felt like it wasn’t roxette, but after that i came to realise it’s a perfect roxette song.

I HATED it.....seriously thought they’d gone off the boil. Then i heard it again.....those strings, that drum-loop..........sooooooooooooooo sexy. Turned out to be one of my fave songs from my fave album of all-time. Weird, innit??
AddeColciago said on December 15, 2005 12:36:
Have A Nice Day is the greatest Rox album ever, I don’t think that they ever will do something like that again. Amazing. HAND made me a Rox fan.
chrisjankunas said on December 15, 2005 14:19:
The second or third Rox song I everheard ! (Almost Unreal first! IMHBL maybe second)
I listened to the UK remix single - the first one was a remix, I mistook it for the actual song and hated it !
Liked it years later when the Ballad Hits was bought! Now I love this song ! :)

i loved the remix version when i first heard it (tee´s radio mix) and i couldn´t believe it was a remix rox song. then, when i heard the stonebridge club mix version i was dazzled. what a perfect single!

Wish I Could Fly is definetely in my favourites list, one of the best Roxette ballads ever. In my opinion, it was the best Roxette comeback. And I love the video as well.

Awesome song. I bought HAND in January 2002 (I started getting Roxette stuff about that time) and I was totally shocked. What a song! It’s the best they have ever done. The intro brings you to heaven, those strings... (I love strings, like in CBB, Beautiful Things, etc). All fits perfectly. The video is brilliant and very sexy. Not just Marie, but all the people there (even the sleepy Per, lol). The lighting effects are good too, showing only a little part of all that people.
I can say it’s my favourite Roxette song. EVER! And it’s my mum’s favourite too (and believe me, she’s already tired of Roxette). But she’s always asking to play WICF, and always says it’s a beautiful song. Mothers are always wise, hehe.
jetjet said on December 22, 2005 20:25:
WICF: great! A bit more modern, but stil very Roxette. The video was awesome too! The search light was was such a good idea!
HAND: terrible..

I remember it exactly. I knew nothing about Roxette then. The beginning of the song was played at the end of some TV programme. I was mesmerized.
erweetiran said on December 27, 2005 08:33:
I saw it on TV and I heard the “Wish I could fly now
” part and that was when I decided that no matter how much you try to make it seem otherwise, you can’t change the fact that they are GOOD
onlywhenidream said on December 27, 2005 17:44:
i thought/ think it was/ is a great song. It was one of the first Roxette songs that interested any of my University mates at the time...it is the most UK-orientated Roxette song ever.
Marc said on December 27, 2005 18:12:
The first time I heard it was when I saw the clip on tv. I loved it!! It sounded so new and fresh and the clip was great. Then I bought the album and I was disappointed. It was so different. It wasn’t really a Roxette sound that I expected. But I learned to love it with the time. It’s a great album and WICF is my favorite.

I first heard it in 1999 but I don’t remember if I liked it or not :( But I don’t have to say whether I like it today... Just look at my nickame and you’ll know...
roxtexanet said on December 27, 2005 22:27:
Loved the song the first time I heard it (January 4th, 1999, along with almost everyone else here!!), but my enthusiasm for it was overshadowed by my excitement over the new album... so I didn’t pay much attention to “WICF”. When the new GH was released in the US, though, I got to hear “WICF” booming over the loud speakers in the Virgin Megastore in NYC and I fell in love with it all over again. I love the combination of classical strings superimposed on modern beats, and the way it soars in the chorus, but best of all is the “somebody tripped on the power cord” bridge... a perfect Roxette moment!

I don´t remeber the day, but I think, it was 3rd day after releasing, i was surpised by the whole album, I remember first impressions of crush on you, I did like it for the first hearing...but i also remember the first impression of WICF video, i stared at the tv with open mouth, that was a masterpiece! :) even now i think, that HAND was the best roxette album! so fresh, perfectly sounding, innovative.....love it!

WICF - wonderful, incredible, catchy and fabolous! That song was the reason i got in deeply touch with Roxette! A wonderful song and a more wonderful videoclip! Still love this song...and there are a couple of songs on the album HANd, which i like a lot....Salvation, BEAUTIFUL THINGS (why never released as single???), It will take a long long time, Cooper, I was so lucky...think i’ve forgotten some...but all in all a great album and a great comeback by Roxette with a wonderful single WICF...as already mentioned :-P

Interesting question!
I’ve only been a big Roxette fan since 2001, but when I first heard the track, I immediately noticed 2 things:
1. It’s a very good song. Marie performs it well, and the production’s pretty timeless.
2. It’s just a new version of It Must Have Been Love :)
...nobody ever seems to mention that the chorus is almost identical, and the verses similar, to IMHBL!
Wicf said on December 28, 2005 18:32:
@ above: I sometimes play the melodies of WICF and IMHBL on my keyboard and they’re quite different...
Wicf said on December 29, 2005 10:11:
@ChrisWilliams: That’s interesting... One of us must be wrong... But who is it?

I was blown away! I was so happy that Roxette were coming back with their new album!! I loved the song so much!!! ... And then HAND was released. It was a huge disappointment. There were 3-4 songs that I liked on the album. The rest were (and still are) garbage (in my opinion!).
WICF was excellent!
