“Mad Magazine,” while publisher William Gaines was still running it, was the greatest old magazine of all. Mad routinely skewered politicians, public figures, movies and movie stars, TV and TV shows/stars, with deliciously vicious PG-rated comedy that has never been equalled since Gaines died – and it contained a lot of plain old funny stuff, too. When Gaines passed on, The Wall Street Journal ran a single editorial “comment” – a large picture of Mad staple Alfred E. Newman, with his usual idiot grin... shedding a huge sad tear from one eye. I am fortunate to still have a pile of them from the 1960s and 1970s – by sheer luck, Mom did not find them in the attic and throw them out, as happens with much valuable old stuff (baseball cards etc). What, Me Worry?

Smash Hits is going to be no more...

That’s a shame, but after reading the article, it sort of blames the current state of the music business. Bands - if you can call them that - are made in boardroom meetings, with people that tick all the right boxes, like looks etc. It does annoy me a little bit. But there is a slow turn around (Very slow really) with more and more “proper” bands coming into the charts.
It’s a good year for Rock N Roll!!
