Maradona or Pelé?

Just want to know, how was the best? For me, Diego Maradona was, is and will be the best football player, but I recognise Pelé was good.
What do you think?
DaminehGessle said on November 3, 2005 02:33:
Maradona!
If his image wasn’t ruined, he would have reached the gods status. Well he did!

Well, this is about Maradona and Pelé so it’s past. But of course if you want to name a football player from the present you can do it. But tell if you prefer Maradona or Pelé.
From the present my favourite players are Milan Baros, Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
DaminehGessle,
you’re right, he ruined himself, but now he’s fantastic again. He has fought a lot and finally he is coming back. A couple of weeks ago on his TV show he said that he hasn’t used drugs for 18 months. Anyway, I love his football and his personal life has nothing to do with it.

Well I really don’t think he ruined himself. They ruined him first. That’s just my personal opinion, some agree some don’t.

Both are overated, but Pele get’s my vote as Maradonna has evolved into a fat, drug snorting cheat.

Hello!
Can’t compare them. Both were great players. However, Pele played many years before Maradona. They played in two very different eras for soccer. Soccer was way different during Pele’s time to that of Maradona’s.
For me, Pele was better. Pelé’s statistics are staggering. During his career he scored 1,280 goals in 1,360 games, second only to another Brazilian, Arthur Friedenreich, who recorded 1,329 goals. He scored an average of a goal in every international game he played–the equivalent of a baseball player’s hitting a home run in every World Series game over 15 years.
Pelé went on to play in four World Cups with Brazil’s National Team. In the 1958 World Cup in Sweden,Pelé stunned the world scoring six goals, including two in the championship game to help Brazil win its first World Cup 5-2 over Sweden. He was only 17 years-old, but a legend was born.
At the 1970 finals in Mexico, the 29-year-old Pelé, led one of the greatest teams ever assembled to win Brazil’s third World Cup. In the 4-1 title triumph over Italy, Pelé, scored a glorious goal. It was Brazil’s 100th World Cup goal.
Pelé also holds the world record for hat tricks[score 3 gols in the same match] (92) and the number of goals scored on the international level (97). His statistics are all the more amazing when compared to today’s top players who can barely score more that 30 goals in a season.
The guy was amazing. Hven’t seen anyone like him yet. But, still we shouldn’t compare Pele and Maradona. The eras were different and that’s it.
It seems that God brought me to Earth with a mission to play soccer,” Edson Arantes Do Nascimento (Pelé).
Take care!

Hey Steven,
sorry, my English is not so good so I’m not to sure about what you mean with drugs and cheat, but if you are saying that he used drugs to cheat I think you are wrong. He used cocaine and no one under the effects of that drug can cheat, they can’t do anything.
Roxrider_USA, in some way I agree with you: they have played in different eras. For me Maradona wasn’t only a football player, he was a magician on the field. Some of his goals are beautiful, are really masterpieces. We say that the ball was in love with him and it did what he wanted.
steven said on November 3, 2005 22:48:
Maradona was expelled from the World Cup in America 1994 after it was discovered that he had no less than FIVE class A drugs in his system.
Hardly a role model is he?
Roxrider_USA said on November 4, 2005 00:08:
@Debora: I know what you mean. See, that’s why i say we can’t compare them.
I remember the so called “Hand of God” goal that he scored. That was a cool goal even though it was with his hand. Well, it’s soccer. In soccer you gotta be smart, fast and sleek. lol
@Steven: I agree with you. I remember that. Also, it is said in Brazil that he put somekind of substance in a water bottle that the brazilian player Branco used to drink his water. As a result, the player got sick and couldn’t play one of the games. Crazy stuff!
Take care!

Since I don’t know who Maradona is, I can’t comment. I’m familiar with the “Legend of Pelé” as I read about it years ago.

Some people said that Maradonna’s goal at the world cup in 1986 (argentina vs england) is considered as the Best Goal in History...
both were great footnall players ...
Debora said on November 4, 2005 17:33:
I don’t say this because I’m Argentinian, but it’s so hard for me to believe that what happened in USA 94 was true. Maradona had some problem with the FIFA president in those days and it is said that “someone put drugs in his test”. The thing is (and this is my personal opinion) that USA worlcup was for Argentina, we had the best team in years, even better than Brazil’s national team, and for “some reason” someone didn’t want Argentina won.
I know Maradona had problems with drugs, as many had and have, it’s an illness, but he’s fighting so hard. I don’t say he’s a model, I think nobody is a model to nobody, we have to be ourself. He made mistakes as everybody.
Anyway, this is about football, not drugs.

Are we talking all time, past, or present players?
