The OTHER Side of Copyright Issues

So I have a question... or a random thought. Depends on who you ask. I design screen savers as a hobby and have thought about selling them. I wanted to do one with Star Trek stuff (Klingon Pictures and the like) and I e-mailed Paramount and this was the reply I got:
(This is the E-Mail I sent:)
Greetings -
I couldn’t find specifically what I was looking for on your web site and I hope this is the correct address to e-mail the request to. With the images posted on the Internet, I’ve managed to amass a small collection of Klingon pictures (ships, Worf, Gowron, and the like from the various Star Trek shows). I was wondering if I could put them together into a Screen Saver format and sell them. The idea is to only recoup the cost of the CDRs themselves (about $5 / disc as they won’t be identical images). I do not have plans on putting them on eBay or the Internet, but to distribute them locally to some of the Star Trek Fan Clubs. If this does pose a Copyright Infringement Issue, I will not do this, as I do not want to cause any issues between me and Paramount Network in any way shape or form.
I haven’t started on the project yet, as I was talking with a couple of my friends and between us, decided that this effort may be in infringement of Copyright Laws and I thought I should find out first before doing so.
Thank you for your time and the reply on this issue.
Sincerely,
Tara Hatch

So... how much shit would I get into if I did Roxette screen savers (with and without music)? Do I need to fire off another e-mail to ask about Copyright Infringement Issues? I was curious because I sure don’t wanna wind up eating it in the shorts later in a lawsuit with Per (or Marie) for that matter. Hell, I’m so po’ I can’t afford the last 2 letters! Not to mention I can’t pay Attention.
Have a giggle folks.

LittleSpooky, you like Star Trek? I’m a big fan. :)
Dunno much about legal stuff... You sure could sell them in Yugoslavia. :S
Not that I’m proud of that but I hope things will change soon....

*cusses up a blue streak*
I’ll get back to this topic after Pagan Pride Festival today. Give me a chance to cool down.
Perhaps... someone could get me Dimberg’s addy (email) and I could ask her directly to obtain permission straight from the duo.
I look at it this way... it is THEIR images I’m using... their faces. If they want a %, I’ll mail them a check directly. I don’t like EMI much right about now... *smirks*

denny: E-mail me and I’ll tell you about my Trek involvement. I hold the rank of Commander in the Klingon Empire, and “command” the IKV Laughing Mink here in Salt Lake City, Utah. [email protected] or [email protected]
If you’re interested, we could always use a foreign “outpost”. The Chancellor and the Vice Chancellor of The Empire and I are friends. As well as the wives (mates) of them respectively.
For more information about the Empire:
http://klingon-empire.org
I invite anyone interested to have a look around. I go by Commander T’ra there. Chancellor Konn, Vice Chancellor qorlIS, Supreme Military Commander hurgh and I will discuss the possibilities of having an outpost or two in other countries. I think it will do us some good :o)
(sorry for the upping of the site there, but I figure it’s a beneficial thing for both sites. ie = Common interests *chuckles*)

When you think about it.... it’s impossible for everyone to have gotten permission from the original source where the photos remains, like all the roxette fansites, those people who make wallpapers of Per and Marie etc... they got to have taken the photo from somewhere, unless they shot it themselves.....
Like if you scan a picture from a CD booklet then put it on your site etc.... it’s not your picture it belongs to EMI or whoever, someone then comes alongs and steals that picture from your site and uploads it elsewhere, you can’t kick up a fuss about that because it was on your site... because it was not yours in the first place, you stole it from it’s original source etc...
If you get my meaning.....
Take for example the picture of Per and Marie at the top of TDR, does TDR hold the copyright for this, because I’ve seen that picture on dozens of sites....
@ LS, Congrats on the job, I emailed you back, but my mail always bounces it back, do you have another email address?

@ Little Spooky wow, playing RPG’s, huh? I did it too once, on a FDTF site. Anyway, I don’t have time for it recently..... I will write you an email when I get a chance...
Not so crazy about Klingons, I’m affraid. :)
Oh, and I have to mention that you can see me in a Trekkies2 movie. :D *blushes*

Yep, same thing with Roxette of course. Although I’m not sure who you’d have to address that letter to. EMI or the photographers respecively.
It’s not even allowed to have other people’s pictures on your websites really.
