Why are you *still* a fan?
Sparvogamarie said on May 18, 2005 14:38:
I was thinking, I have been a fan 15 years and most others here have been a fan for a really long time too. I’ve liked a lot of artists over the years but usually I get bored with them and move to something else. But I never got sick of Roxette.... I don’t know what it is about them that kept me a fan for so long! Does anyone else feel the same?
JoyRidErno said on May 18, 2005 15:17:
I agree.
Time goes by but Roxette stays :) Actually I’m playing Joyride vinyl right now and it doesn’t sound old ;)
I started to collect Rox-stuff just year ago, so that’s one thing that keeps me a fan :) (Btw. I got IMHBL promo ’87 and Talking about Tourism discs last week, I’m still quite happy :p)

Good question. I thought about it too once. And I think it’s just like that - Roxette is part of me, maybe not that big, I cannot say for example that Roxette is 50% of me. But it is some part of me, don’t know exaclty the numers but I have feeling like this sometimes.
How to explain in other way the fact that I never get bored with Roxette and Co?? I’m listening a lot of other music but, I’m fan of other bands and artists but it was never the same like with Roxette.
Ofcourse we can say that simply we got used to rox music, cos it’s with us for years long, sometimes more than half our lives. But there must be something in it that we always come back to their music. Is it just the problem of being used to it??

Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe:
“The effects of good music are not just because it’s new; on the contrary music strikes us more the more familiar we are with it.”
I like music, I like good music, and that’s why I still like Roxette. Because they make good music, and I’m used to it.
On the other hand I am not “still a fan”. I don’t like the word “fan”, it makes me think of some kind of hooligan and I consider myself to be a very rational person. But well, being a scientist that is the way it should be anyway :)
Some people around this site really honour the etimology of the word “fan” (let us not forget, it comes from “fanatic”, which means ” marked by excessive enthusiasm and often intense uncritical devotion”).
Other reason why I’m still linked to Roxette is due to the internet and this site. You meet people thru here and Roxette is always a link with them. Those relationships make you remember they still exist, while with some other bands for me it does not happen so often.

Well it will be my 14th anniversary this year of being a roxer, and although for years I ignored a lot of other music because I was only into roxette I like to think I have a wide taste of music now, even if the Mazarin album has been in my CD player for the past 4 months :)
I guess there has to be something there that keeps me coming back for more, although I still say the Joyride album is my fave! :)

Good original question.
I have been a Roxette fan for 13 years. When Roxette were in top of their fame, the most fans were in ages between 12 - 19 years old, now 10 and more years later between 22 - 29 years. It means the most Roxette fans stayed loyal them! Life goes on but Roxette stay! Isn´t it a beautiful? I think Roxette songs are beautiful pop melodic songs which they can listen for a long time - It´s reason why I am still a fan. I can´t imagine some metal fan who listen his metal band from his teenage years over 10 years.
Sparvogamarie said on May 18, 2005 17:28:
I agree Santi, I hate the word fan. When I hear the word I think of psycho stalkers chasing tour buses. A friend came to my house today and when she saw my small picture album of Marie she was like “wow, you’re really an obsessed fan!” I hate that expression, it sounds like I’m creeping outside Marie’s house with a telephoto lens and sending her mail with my hair in it! (a fan seriously did that to Johnny Depp...and it wasn’t hair from her head if you get my meaning....)
gyllene_tjej said on May 18, 2005 17:36:
I’ve grown up with them so the songs bring back lots of precious moments. Then, Per’s lyrics and voice always lift me up and so even now, when they’re out of the limelight their magic is still there. Finally, they’re huge part of my life and even if it’s not in the form of Roxette they’re somehow still alive and kicking - you know either their solo works or GT, Per and Marie somehow hit the airwaves all the time.
harriej said on May 18, 2005 17:50:
Because the music is still great.
And it is also a way of feeling; difficult to explain, but hearing the name Roxette already can brighten up the day.
Also, i met some good friends via Roxette.
So, Roxette = positive and that’s why I am and always will be a fan.

After about 16 years... why am I still a fan.
Roxette came into my life during a difficult time. I’d just come back from living with my dad and I was fairly screwed up from the experience. I don’t know how to really explain it, but the music appealed to me at the time. It felt good. Over the years, I’ve faced more trials than I care to count: Death, my ex-bf (lover, whatever) deciding to go back and re-marry his ex-wife, troubles at the job, getting fired from said job, and so on down the line.
But no matter what, Roxette has been a mainstay in my music choices. Maybe it’s because the music hit a resonance in a troubled teen and made her feel at peace for a while and it continues to do so, no matter what life throws at her now she’s an adult. I tend to go for the upbeat songs rather than the slow ones though.

They just can make good music. That’s all. Music for the heart, for fun... just to enjoy.
Thank you roxette for all those wonderful moments that I spend with your music!

Santi summed up something for me that I realized some time ago: “Other reason why I’m still linked to Roxette is due to the internet and this site.”
Been kicking around with them since Look Sharp! It’s good music, singable, danceable, enjoable. . .everything that great pop should be.
But I think I’ve become more attached to them since I found this community and was able to share my passion for the music with like-minded folks from around the world. And the more we share in here, it seems the more I want to listen to Per and Marie.
I would go months without a Rox song before, but for almost two years now, there’s Rox practically everyday somewhere for me. Or Marie’s solo work, or Per’s. . . Gotta be over 100 tracks of the 700 on my computer at work are Rox/Rox related and they shuffle about all day as I work. . .

And as MiracleMan said TDR really helps. I only know of 2 other people that like Roxette and having a place like TDR where you can talk about them and chat with others really is something that keeps them with me.
And the fact that their music is pretty damn good as well doesn’t hurt either :-p

It’s interesting that we are still loyal to Roxette even though they are not so successful anymore. In Australia where I’m from, they are pretty much forgotten and haven’t been heard from in almost 10 years. I mean if it was Madonna or something, it’s easy to see that her fans stayed with her since she’s never really gone away. But for us Roxette fans, we’ve stayed with a band that has disappeared for long periods and hasn’t exactly topped the charts in a really long time. I wonder, does that say something about Roxette being a great band, or Rox fans being extremely loyal!!!
For me it’s Marie plain and simple...I just got stuck on her when I was 11 and never managed to unstick myself! She’s been there for more than half my life kind of like a big sister. Even if I don’t always like a new album or something, I couldn’t imagine forgetting her like I have with other singers I’ve liked before.

Roxette have always sparked a real excitment in me that no other artist has ever done. In the early days it was ALL roxette and no-one came close, these days I listen to a lot of other music but doesn’t matter what I always go back to Roxette or related.
Hearing their voices and that ’style’ of music is like going home...especially when I hear Marie’s voice...when I got ’The change’ it was an amazing feeling to be listening to her sing again...
For me everything they do interests me...other artists I like their music but hardly ever bother to find out about them and follow what is happening with them etc... Marie and Per have a piece of my heart I guess and I think I will always be a fan in some way or another :)

Sparvogamarie said on May 24, 2005 16:29:
LOL Santi, I don’t remember the date but I know it was around April 1990 because that is when IMHBL was number 1. I don’t celebrate it but I do remember all the dates I met Marie how saaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!! Don’t celebrate them but I can tell you off the top of my head the first time I met her was July 12 2000, the last time was May 19 2005 and the last time before that was November 18 2001. Sad sad saaaaaad!
I know worse, I know a Bon Jovi fan who throws him a birthday party every year. She invites friends over, bakes a cake then sends a slice of cake and photos of the party to Jon Bon Jovi.

kroeby1 said on May 24, 2005 18:42:
hi sparvogamarie
i know what you mean with your question. i have the same feeling like you. many artists in live, but not one had ever the same importance like marie and per. maybe it is about, we grew up with roxette and we have listen to this sound when it was most important for the musicfeeling. i only can talk about me and it was like this: my first single i ever buyed was “you win again” from the bee gees, then it was “heaven is a peace on earth” from belinda carlisle. about this point it was for a long time only roxette, roxette and once again roxette. it was a little bit boring for my friends in this days.
than with the great spaces between roxette albums i also was listening to other groups or artists. but like you sayed, everytime for a short while and at the end you took, like another thousand times, a roxette cd in the player.
but i also realised an other mysterium with me. in the have a nice day times, i did not have this feeling. i did not listen to this record so many times. it was not that music i expected and i did not like it. so this was the first album from roxette i was not fall in love with.
room service was exact that what i wanted and needed at this time, everything was ok. like more than 10 years before. :-)

But all this songs are sometimes medicine for me and because of that I can listen to their music (togheter or alone) all the time.

Why “still”??
I like music - so I like Roxette (and all related)!
Most of the time you listen to the radio you here just noice - but not music! Music means melody and feelings. Roxette have all this! Most of the “modern” music doesn’t have melodys or feelings and if it has, it doesn’t fit! Most of the modern “popstars” (especially in Germany - don’t know how it is in other countries) can’t sing, can’t write music/words and can’t play an instrument - they just look good (more or less - and if you ask me, not even that). I think that makes some kind of hope - if you are too stupid to do anything else you can become a popstar - at least in Germany!! I’ve always wondered why I haven’t tried it - I have all the necessary skills - I canm’t sing, can’t write music/words, can’t play an instrument - but maybe I look too good?! Don’t know...
Roxette belongs to my life! There are so much memories and their music meant so much to me in some really difficult parts of my life! when I listendto therir music I could forget about my problems - at least for a few minutes. That I will never forget!!
:-)

Of course at the beginning the DJ goes “Does anyone remember Roxette?” then there was someone on the line and it was a guy and he said “Yeah of course” and the DJ goes “Roxette!!!!” and the listener goes “Yeah I loved Roxette” and the DJ goes “I’m getting a bit worried about you” ...typical DJ’s! Then they played ’Joyride’...and it was really great to hear it on the radio I turned it up and for 4min the outside world didn’t exist and then I thought of this topic LOL

a lot of artist don’t sell singles that good. only young artist do. like britney spears.
look at metallica or something they don’t have top hits but they sell out a big arena.
the most artists i like, are not populair but they make real music that last for years and years because they sing and write in there own words. and not with what a producer thinks. and that’s the most importent thing. don’t forget that.
i am still a fan because i saw roxette in 1989 in a small club called paradiso in holland it was my first concert and it was the best one i ever saw.

After CBB I started buying all their previous albums caus I didn’t really knew them already that well. So for me, it was like five new Roxette albums in one year :) I also liked the 4 DBUGTTC songs. HAND and RS where less impressive to me but I hope they’ll come back one more time without trying to be hipp, and just do their thing again. Long live Roxette :)

Good question: I think I’m still a fan of the original roxette stuff as it has never really lost its pop ’sheen/glimmer.’ Also, listening to them holds many happy memories for me.
Furthermore, nobody plays good live pop music anymore, save maybe Scissor Sisters. So I guess I live in hope that Roxette can come back and do it again. Although, relaistically this is unlikely.
I’m still a fan of Per’s stuff as the TWATG and Mazarin were excellent pop, I liked Mazarin the best as I found that pretty original.
I no longer consider them my favourite band by any means, and haven’t done for years. However, for me they define what a pop band should be, quirky but able to kick ass live.
