Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger = Pope Benedict XVI

So he has just been elected... I suspected this guy would become pope... but he is a little bit old!
ncurran said on April 19, 2005 19:43:
I’m not catholic, but i am disappointed that such a conservative pope has been elected who will basically follow the same tough stance as the previous pope did. Its a pity the catholic church cant progress like the rest of society.

dont get me wrong when i write this , but i dont understand how people can get so so upset and so happy about a new pope, after all he was voted in just like a prime minister , he wasnt sent down from heaven or anything like that . I didnt know no women get a vote for a pope either , so as i understand its a group of male high priests voting for a pope ?!
When i asked my mum who is catholic she just went all quiet and didnt know what to say to me, If you believe in that system thats ok, i just dont ’get’ it myself , does anyone else know what i mean or can explain ?
Have a nice day all :)
Jud (moderator) said on April 19, 2005 20:46:
well of course it’s just a couple (100 something) guys that just sit there and debate and pray and whatever else they need to do to get inspired and vote, but it happens that the elected guy is sometimes treated as something higher than a prime minister and claims that he represents a bunch of people (1,1 billion). Long life to democracy ;)
Santi said on April 19, 2005 20:49:
Obviously no women can vote since no women can become a priest. As in any organization there are different trends, and everyone wants their trend to get favoured, that’s why some get frustrated and some light fireworks. “Plain people”... it’s pointless. I “understand” that Germans get so happy since he’s German. The others, maybe they felt “orphans”.
The other funny thing I see on TV is that they labeled Karol Wojtyla was a “progressist” in many issues (yes, some say that, yes...) and they consider Ratzinger to be a continuation of his command and everyone agrees now that this man is extremely conservative...
coyboyusa said on April 19, 2005 20:49:

Jud (moderator) said on April 19, 2005 21:07:
but they are not stupid these people. Religion apathy is growing in (Western) Europe, being Germany one of the engines of the EU and having a big power of influence and decision.. this looks like a clear step to try to “reevangelizate” Europe.
He does have a lot of work ahead. The role of women in the church, clonation, sexuality, pre-marriage relationships, condom, homosexuals...
Not bad not bad
rox-kuryliw said on April 19, 2005 22:03:
Judith i agree with the above statement , but the biggest catholic population is south america still . Y ou know i still feel its more about power than faith, i still believe in god and jesus, but i cant prayer for someone voted into pope postion by 100 men or so, seems strange if you know what i mean ? I understand its a symbol of faith , but he is just a normal man is he not who got one to many votes by men ? would be better with pope idol at least we will know then that the money from the phone lines to go help people lol,
They is no work to do in my mind, Women have equal power in this world, and its about time the took it. As for gay people ! nothing to work on them either they are what they are, cant they believe in god cos they love a man ? Cos they love someone of same sex its wrong, and blowing people up in wars or a group of men voting for a man to be the voice/rules of god isnt worng, no wonder i see a therapist ???? ill stop before i get on my hight horse sorry lol

Ratzinger was the enforcer of the doctrine for a long time. This position differs distinctly from the position of a pope.
On the other hand religions are based on belief and a tradition which hasn’t changed as much over many centuries as political and social directions have changed within very short periods in time. If you ever get the chance to read a book written by Ratzinger, you will soon realize that this man may have strong convictions which many people might not agree on, but he is very much aware of how our society has changed over the last century. Does that mean the church has to follow its direction? If they’d do so, wouldn’t that put in question everything the church stands for?
LittleSpooky said on April 20, 2005 03:07:
From what I understand, Cardinal Ratzinger was supposed to be an “enforcer” of sorts. Pardon me, I know I’ll offend a few:
Boy did he SCREW UP in the US! Holy shit! (no pun intended). Stop and think:
Right now, the US “branch” of the Catholic Church is still embroiled in the molestation of children by Catholic Priests (however, this is not a leading news headline as much as it used to be). If he was supposed to “help” in keeping these clowns in line... that boy fell asleep at the switch!!!
I have a friend who is working on getting her degree in theology (this will be her second degree), and her opinion is this:
Pope John Paul II led with with a bit of a “tight fist”, but Cardinal Ratzinger is even more... “strict” than John Paul II. Here’s to the “fun” ahead.
Jud (moderator) said on April 20, 2005 06:19:

I am not catholic but I was sad when the pope died. Now I am happy they have elected the new pope. it seemed many of catholic people I know don’t mind about the system of the election. so, I think they still believe in that system. and I must said that maybe its the purest election I have ever seen. no money politics and no corrupt.
and why the people can be so happy after they cried when the previous pope died? I think they’re happy now because there is someone that can continue the previous pope noble work. it doesnt mean that they have forget him.
nancy_girl said on April 20, 2005 11:01:
i guess you can say a lot about him, but he’s definitely not a nazi.
kriszta said on April 20, 2005 12:03:
@Mari: Ratzinger was in Hitlerjugend just few months.
I think than in Germany was obligatory all of youngs.
Mari said on April 20, 2005 12:30:
Once a nazi, always a nazi. And hey, Ratzinger has excatly same opinions as his idol (Hitler) has. Nazipope, not surprise at all.
StillFar said on April 20, 2005 12:50:
@Mari: just out of couriosity, can you name their consensuses of opinions?
girl7twenty7 said on April 20, 2005 12:59:
First of all it looks like Benedict XVI is a “temporary” pope because he’s old enough and there is a kind of tradition that after a long pontificate should be a short one, a “break” to the church to think about the next direction of its evolution. How it will turn this time nobody knows :) Well, cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Pope Benedict XVI can be almost like diferent persons. What it will be this time we’ll see later.
rox-kuryliw said on April 20, 2005 13:32:
I think they needs to be a HUGE evolotion of the christian church in the near future , if not we will just end up having loads of little christian faiths on there own, but just with slightly different beliefs that can accomadate gay people, people who have children who arnt married ect. Plus people who wanna use a rubber ;)
tcooh said on April 20, 2005 13:36:
I don’t think Ratzinger was the best choice, way to conservative adn stuck in old traditions. He even condemed The Beatles in 1996.
pumpkins said on April 20, 2005 15:10:
New pope cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict xvi) - Already nicknamed “Papa Ratzi”!!
Mari, what you write there is libelous. You better be careful what you put down in writing.
The man was never a nazi. Being drafted into the Hitler Jugend is a far cry from being a Nazi.
Superbullie said on April 20, 2005 15:14:
@Mari: please shut up!
Or please at least explain why you are blaming the new Pope like that. You must have some reasons. Let us know!
Or do you hate Germans at all?
Jud (moderator) said on April 20, 2005 15:19:
well it is true that people were forced to join Hitler’s army, he was even elected here in Austria in open-elections, each had to give name+address and show the vote erh..., no wonder he won? After that many Austrians were forced to fight for him, whether they liked it or not, I would not call all these people Nazi but victims of Nazism...
I don’t know about this new pope, his thoughts are conservative and radical enough anyway ;)

Oldag75 said on April 20, 2005 17:24:
Is it valid to question how “nice and sweet” something can be, when it involves people in a religion who declare, “If you don’t live by these particular rules, you go to Hell Hell Hell !” ?
All those people who ate meat on Fridays and died before that meat rule was changed – did somebody like go get them out of Hell, and advise they were retroactively absolved ?
By the way, why is one allowed to employ mathematics for birth control, but not chemistry and physics ?
Santi said on April 20, 2005 17:33:
Oh, so it’s been nicknamed like that already :(
I prefered “Pope Mazinger (Z)”, for that of strong (iron) man :D
grisu said on April 20, 2005 20:26:
@ Mari: Have you ever read something about Ratzinger saying that Hitler is his “idol”? So many boys and girls in the 1930´s belonged to the Hitlerjugend or the BDM, because they did not want to be punished by the system. My own grandparents would have been Nazis if your point of view was right. And I can tell you: They´re not.
But for sure we Germans will never get rid of our image.
nancy_girl said on April 20, 2005 21:08:
indeed we won’t, so i might as well get used to it..
lol typical, that nickname turned up like 10 minutes after he was elected. i think i’ll call him pope Benny.
and i agree, it wasn’t the best choice, though maybe the easiest one? he’s intelligent and humble, but i think you could expect a bit more from a new pope... but as i don’t practice my religion i shouldn’t complain.
LittleSpooky said on April 21, 2005 05:29:

See how most German newspapers reacted to English headlines about the Pope and Nazism/Hitler’s army... all reacted as if they would have been “insulted” personally, and how TVs and all celebrate the German pope... while most are Protestant or non believers/ without any religion (about 65%) ;)

Judith, regarding the reaction to the British press: I don’t think it’s a religious issue, but rather a political and historical issue. As a journalist you’re supposed to be objective. Although many nations had split reactions to the election of Ratzinger, it’s the British press which didn’t judge this man on the theologian he is or the work he has delivered over the last decades. They saw part of his life, didn’t really analyse that period and delivered headlines in order to sell a larger amount of copies. It’s a sentiment that is reflected in the way many young Brits still view Germans although both parties were born long after the end of WWII.
I’m not the most articulate person, so maybe you want to read this article: http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,352550,00.html to get a better idea of what I’m trying to say...
LittleSpooky said on April 24, 2005 05:16:
I’m curious about the rabid hatred many seem to have for this man.
I’m not understanding of it. But then again, I ain’t Catholic
Breathe8 said on April 24, 2005 16:59:
I am not catholic but I think he is a bit older to be a pope.
LittleSpooky said on April 25, 2005 05:07:
The “youngest” Cardinal is something like 62 or 65 and they said he was “TOO YOUNG” to become Pope... what the hell is that?!
That’s like when the President of the LDS church dies.. .they find the next oldest clown to put in there...
If someone was TRULY wanting to help convert people to their faith and so on... would it not make sense to put someone in who was a bit more “in touch” with the current world?
pumpkins said on April 25, 2005 06:22:
To be more “in touch” with the current world you would need to be closer to the devil than to God. Too many people want churches to accomodate their weaknesses. To me, age means experience.
girl7twenty7 said on April 25, 2005 09:46:
Yes he was 58. As i remember Wojtyla wasn’t the younguest pope ever but one of them indeed.
per_mson said on April 25, 2005 21:14:
After looking through this topic there’s only one thing I can add: No wonder there are so many wars with religious background!
I would also like to tell Mari that the comment “ones a nazi always a nazi” is a, no offense, pretty stupid one. Have you ever reflected over that many people were “forced” to be nazis during the war by pure fear of what would happen to them if they said they were not? I am absolutely against the nazi politics, but I think I would be chicken enough to be a nazi (outwards, not in my mind) if I lived during WWII.

Jud (moderator) said on May 11, 2005 21:54:
No.. that’s one of the things I miss the most from Spanish TV!! Those 10-15 mins were the best on TV :D
what did they do this time?
Santi said on May 11, 2005 22:21:
Well, they talk about all his points of view on the world, and name him “Panzer Cardinal, Pope Adolf II”.
Then the pope appears and blesses everyone “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Third Reich, amen”.
Later the talk about the reactions around the world and in England, Prince Charles calls Harry and William to greet the new Pope and they show up saying “Finally a modern pope” (dressed in nazi uniforms).
Among other things :DD
I think Canal + France is going to be fined for this, they’re telling on the French news.
(This is not in the Spanish version of the “Noticias del Guiñol”. However you can follow both the Spanish and the French Puppet News on their websites:

I’m from Poland. I was all the time with my Pope when he was dying just like most people from my country. I cried and prayed. I’ve learned not to judge anyone. That is why I’m waiting for moves of our new Pope. I respect choice of Conclawe just like 26 years ago all the people accepted that choice although it seemed very controversial. I suggest we should give a chance to Benedict XVI to became our Pope. he will never be the same as John Paul II. Noone can replace that man. If the choice of conclawe was good or wrong time will show. let’s just wait patiently.
