How do they DO it???

So I was listening to the 80s Digital Music station on my cable package. Nothing new there. Whilea song is being played, they flash up factoids about the band or the music industry or music instruments. I’ve seen some of the factoids about different bands and I got to wondering:
Mr. Mister - Started in 1982 ended in 1989 and the like.
Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, and Roxette... they are STILL TOGETHER. Yes, EVERYONE has taken a break to do solo stuff.... well, mebbe not Aerosmith and Rolling Stones (I haven’t heard of any solo stuff from them, yet).
Makes me wonder:
How in the hell they do it??!! And how come they can, and others can’t.

I think they do it because they’re extremely happy with their work, they really enjoy what they are doing and they’ve been successful enough that they don’t have to work at any other endeavor to support themselves. A guy I knew realized at the age of 11, after composing a brief story about a baseball game his elementary school class had just played, that he wanted nothing in the world but to be a newspaper reporter covering sports. The following year, he started working on the school newspaper, worked on the papers all during high school and college (journalism major), and then covered sports for several media organizations as he traversed adulthood. It happened that his primary interest in life was viable as a career. That is the most fortunate sort of person there is.
An early review of the Rolling Stones, in a London newspaper, said something like “This group shows a lot of promise, but they need to get rid of the guy with the tire-tread lips.”

Considering activities that have resulted in his present physical appearance, Keith Richards deserves some sort of special music award simply for still being alive.

Could be also the type of music they do. From the bands that you mention the only really 80’s band is Roxette, since they others all started in the 60’s or 70’s. Especially the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith are what everyone would call a “rock band”. Rock never dies, as everyone can see, it has some kind of power, that kind of music re-invents itself. We’re listening to the same song for the last 50 years and it still “rocks”.
Maybe it’s because it’s simple, simple things are easy to understand for everyone. Maybe it’s because of the rock culture, as a reaction to the status quo (though it certainly has become the status quo) it still appeals young people who by nature rebels against “parental society”. In this aspect, it’s curious to note that as well as it was a rebel movement in the beginning, the people who grew up with rock are now dominating the industry, and imposing their likings probably, and we see new “rebel” movements such as rap or electronic stuff.
Whatever it is, it still rocks. I think this is a decissive factor for those bands to stay together.
Success is important. If a band keeps being successful, as long as there is no too much envy between the members, or they can overcome it, they can survive. Roxette had their problems too...

theystill do it because they dont’ take any risks they stick to one sound over n over and over, and when they take a detour the fans lash out so then they go back to their stale ways, kinda like the backlash alot of ” real fans” had over hand and roxette,
RoxHard said on January 14, 2005 15:22:
what? hand never caused a “backlash”! And Room Service wasn’t particularly a return to their Look Sharp days, imo...
And I hate this whole “real fans” rubbish. Real fans apprepriate their rock element as much as their dance/pop element!

Keith Richards = Walking cure for damn near every disease known to man. He sniffs Anthrax and goes “Aaawwwrrrrriiiiiight... doesn’t go with my e-coli...”
He makes the OSBOURNES look AMISH.
And I did not know that Jagger / Richards had done their own thing. I’ve heard them mostly as The Stones.
I know Stevie Nicks did her own stuff from Fleetwood Mac (and that they got back together again, minus one or two)... so...
and rock can take a hiatus, our radio stations here in SLC can prove that... *shudder*
It was just one of those things that made me stop and think is all.

LittleSpooky said on January 16, 2005 18:12:
You mean CHRISTIE McVie?
And no.... I didn’t find it crappy at all.
Basically, Fleetwood Mac has spanned 37 years with a total of 16 people optin in and out of the band.

C’mon spookster, can you really put roxette into the same category as Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and Fleetwood Mac? Dont give me wrong, I love Roxette and I am surprised they didnt sell 20 Million Copies of each of their Albums.... but they just dont have the same status as Rolling Stones or Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, do they?
Sascha said on January 20, 2005 15:57:
Of course not. They’re not from Anglo-America, just from Sweden – far from the big scene. ;-)
LittleSpooky said on January 21, 2005 04:45:
Moin: The point to my comment was the fact that there were MANY bands that had MORE hits in the 80s - 90s than Roxette, but despite their success, they’re not around / together.
I commented about Aerosmith, Stones, etc for the fact that they never “broke up”, just took a hiatus.
