New Year's Resolutions
LittleSpooky said on January 2, 2005 08:23:
I know that it seems trivial to several people... or most of us on here *grins*... however, this year I’ve made a NYR that I’d like to keep:
To get into better shape.
I went up to visit my dad who lives about an hour from me and discovered something today that kinda has life in a kink yet again for me:
My dad is a diabetic. What kind, I have no idea, we didn’t really discuss it much (wanted to catch up on family mostly). I know it’s controlled right now primairly by diet alterations and exercise. Why does this toss my world? Well, it’s another disease that I have to now keep on top of in my life. Cancer, various heart conditions, chemical imbalances, and now diabetes tops the list of health issues that I have to monitor. So, it’s set my resolve to lose weight and try to get down to one I can live with.
So, not to bore anyone else, any body else have NYRs they wanna share??
Oh yeah... before I forget:
WAY TO GO RUNNIN’ UTES!!!!!!!!! University of Utah trounced the CRAP outta Pittsburgh 35 - 7 in the Fiesta Bowl. (American College Football). UofU, Brigham Young University, Utah State University are very RARELY invited to Bowl games. Utah universities (as well as a few other states) are kinda like “bastard children” of the sports world because of the tiny media market here. However, after having an 11 - 0 season, and then rippin Pitt to shreds... we end the Football season 12 - 0. I don’t follow college much, but am proud of this team. Way to go guys!!

@ Little Spooky, snap my NYR is the same as yours, diabetes runs in our family to as well as renal failure and many other things. I have made the same NYR for at least the past 10 years and have never gotten past the first month, but this year things are different, I want to do things which I cannot because of my weight etc... etc... so this year I have already made many positive moves into getting fit and healthy this year and come December 2005 when I go to Sweden again I will be a lighter person!
I have got the support of two best friends who are always there for me to chat to, I’ve joined WW for the weekly support and I am about to join a gym as well, so three positive things already and a lot more to come!
LittleSpooky said on January 2, 2005 18:15:
^5 Ally. Yup yup... part of mine is because it looks like I’ll be flying to different parts of the US to play paintball with some friends. And after having to sprint (not easy for my fat ass) from one side of Cincinnati, N. Kentucky airport to the other, that was one of the deciding factors.
The other part is to keep my health in check. My dad is only 18 years and a couple of months older than me (so’s my mom).....
ally77 said on January 2, 2005 19:49:
Well good luck, I know you’ll succeed! keep us updating on how you do!! ;)

I’ve promised myself 3 this year:
1. Take more exercise.
2. Recycle my household rubbish.
3. Get guitar lessons.
@ LittleSpooky: Good on you... You CAN do it!
LittleSpooky said on January 3, 2005 00:55:
Thanks guys... I can use all the support I can get. I’m starting a workout routine on Tuesday (first day back to work). I plan on doing something either with the treadmill or the exercise bike. I’ll start off easy, and then figure out what weights to toss around later.
sweet_stalker57 said on January 3, 2005 02:04:
Tara the main thing you need to do is stay away from Amerikkkan KKKorporate processed foods with pure rubbish in them such as ASPARTAME, MSG and NITRATES. Some fuckin kooks in labs
putting the same stuff in your food as in your gas tank.
the fight will not be won in the gym but in the kitchen.
you go girl!!! :)

roxgirl_germany said on January 3, 2005 19:08:
I have to admit: I have the same plan, losing weight. (For quite some time, actually, but now I finally can/want to put it into practice.)
I started to gain weight when I had finished school and started working. I want to get back to the weight I had when I left school so that would make 12kg to get rid off. *grmpf*
My problem is that I can eat all the time, all day long, 24/7. I eat for any reason (but hunger), esp. when I am sad, depressed, in a bad mood... So that’s a vicious circle that has to be broken. (Still trying to find out how...)
Anyhow, after a period of contemplation (which took almost all of last year, I think), I have now reached the point where not only the mind is willing but also the flesh. (That’s already quite an achievement, isn’t it. :-P) That it’s the beginning of a new year is rather a coincidence; a good point for me to change “bad” habits is after a holiday (which I had during the Christmas season).
I contemplated about what to do to lose weight and I finally had to face up to the fact that I have to do what I hate most: cut down on one of my few pleasures, CHOCOLATE & stuff *sniff*, and I have to take up physical exercise *pukes* *pukes again*.
So I let Santa give me an outfit for Nordic Walking for Christmas and I want to join a course. (I need the pressure to be in a certain place at a certain time to do a certain thing so a course it is.) I also want to check out some gymnastic courses (for the back, aerobic, step...) if I can get myself to adding something like that. Maybe I should also get myself a stepper for home, in case it rains, it’s cold outside or whatever excuse may keep me inside... *rollseyes*
I think some support would do no harm so what do you think about creating an online thread to exchange our experiences, thoughts, frustrations, successes and to support each other?
P.S. Some other decisions I have taken (respectively some of the goals in my plans for the next year) include the sponsoring of a child in a Third-World country (waiting for the information now, have always wanted to do that, now I finally have the means to do it) and saving up for one of the holidays of my dreams (one of the trips I want to have made before I die): a trip to Australia and/or New Zealand. If I can get through with my plan, it should be a realistic scheme to go on that trip in 2 - 3 years.

Wish I’d EVER have to problem having to gain weight - would be done within 3 days...
LittleSpooky said on January 8, 2005 02:06:
Well....
I tossed myself up on the scale to see how much I weighed so I know how to attack this and lose the weight.
Needless to say....
Now I’m depressed. :-(

Successful week for me, I have dropped some pounds! :) and am felling really positve... found there is tons of support from others out there in my situtation!
roxgirl_germany said on January 8, 2005 10:13:
Well, I faced the scales on Monday and this morning, too. Can’t say anything has improved - nor has it gotten worse. That’s already a success.
All week long, I’ve been fighting the bad habit of eating out of frustration at work - I won! 1 week done, more to go. Will check out sport courses from next week.
Jud (moderator) said on January 8, 2005 13:06:
seeing this we could surely create a “weight watchers” club at TDR :P
Me also wants to loose weight, I have done it before so I know I can be thinner, some clothes also vouch for that, I used to fit in them :O
Now repeat with me “we can loose weight” “chocolate sucks”
:D
@harriej: you could start with the being positive about other people (esp certain mods) here at TDR ;) now.. breathe deep and count to 10 ;)

Ahm... I think I messed something up here... :-O
@Judith: Yes, why not, we should create “morale support” community here!
purplemedusa said on January 8, 2005 13:53:
LOL 2 the weight watchers idea... urm i think very few ppl r happy with their weight/body... I think I can do with a kilo or 5 less - COOKIES SUCK!! It’s just that there’s slight hints of love-handles... which just ain’t acceptable to me!! LOL
To Harrej... 75kg ain’t that bad for your height!!
- wouldn’t mind half a COOKIE right now... only a half -
Jud (moderator) said on January 8, 2005 14:44:
actually we might inspire eachother if we explain our progresses here :)
I have an old static bike here home, I plan to start using it next week, starting Monday, half an hour every day, decided to play some music to make it.. more bearable :)
Next thing to do is get rid of all chocolate home.. we got too much for Christmas :(
Are you on a diet or?
roxgirl_germany said on January 8, 2005 16:05:
I want to cut down on the chocolate (sweet) stuff. No more frustration sweets at work. Worked all of last week (with considerable efforts of will, though) and hope it’ll continue to work...
I got my mother’s stepper to my appartment and want to start to train a bit on that one.
And I want to check out some gym courses from next week. Wanted to get started with Nordic Walking today but a “very nice” bellyache attack this morning made me rather stay at home so that’s been postponed to next week.
harriej said on January 8, 2005 16:27:
It is just above the bottom line of what is a good, healthy weight for my length. I used to be under that line (to thin) about 5 years ago, so I don’t really worry about it.
ally77 said on January 8, 2005 18:14:
I am cutting down on everything! and today I joined a gym!
http://www.esporta.co.uk/en/club/index.aspx
and at the cost of the monthly fees I won’t be skipping it! Now tomorrow I must go shopping for some new trainers and stuff, I have my first session on Monday!
Jud (moderator) said on January 8, 2005 20:37:
have also looked at a gym, elixia.at
It’s rather pricey but it’s on the other hand comfy, it’s on the way home from work (2 stops from work, 1 stop to the station where I take the tram), it has a swimming pool (I used to be a very good swimmer, well I am still, just need to get back to it) and huge rooms with bikes and treadmills and so on. They also have this spinning (something i might take when I am fit, would be a suicide to start with that :O).
Somewhen I also plan to work to the train station (15-20min)
ally77 said on January 8, 2005 21:23:
We have three good gyms in my town, the one I have chosen is the middle priced one, also has a swimming pool, I really regret giving up swimming when I was in my teens, I use to swim for my town and hardly go now but would love to get back into it again, so hopefully going to this gym will do that!
LittleSpooky said on January 9, 2005 03:38:
At one point in time... I felt a little foolish for posting here about this...
Not now.
Kachina: You and me both babe. However, I think droppin some pounds will also help combat that and mebbe improve my self-esteem (wtf is that???) a bit. :o)
sweet_stalker57 said on January 10, 2005 02:45:
no no no no no! all those exercise machines are worthless. only things that your body really does will work. (unless you have a bad knee, hip, etc)
swimming, walking, REAL stairs, dancing, yoga...yes yes yes.
trust me on this. :)

My fingers do press the remote control buttons and my hands do bring the popcorn to my mouth, does that work? :p

I have two New Year’s resolutions. The first, like so many others, is to lose weight. Actually, I’m already well on my way and am a thid of the way toward reaching my goal! I think we should start a support thread just for all the dieters!
My second resolution is that I’m finally going to Denmark. It’s a lifelong dream and I’ve waited way too long to make it happen...so come November, I’m going!!! I’m very excited about this! :-)
ally77 said on January 10, 2005 21:43:
So who’s gonna start a dieters topic! ;) come on.... someone please come up with a witty title!
LittleSpooky said on January 11, 2005 05:46:
Sweets: Not all the gyms have pools. And the one I’m going to plan on attending will have a trainer to assist me. Eventually, once I can FIT back into my suit, I’ll hit the pool. Right now, you don’t wanna see me in less than a pair of sweat pants and a t-shirt, thanks.
Jud (moderator) said on January 11, 2005 07:06:
I have nothing against body-work, it does work, but believe me, I have experience (let’s say >10 years in the market) with those machines and they DO work, too.
Have you ever tried this eliptical one? it’s rather new, looks like a stepper, bigger, and the movement is eliptical.. I was once half an hour on that and then I couldn’t move anymore :O No need to say I was sweating like a pig :P
Static bikes with programs do wonders too, put it to start slow and easy and end up climbing a mountain, do that for 2 months, 30-40 mins a day, and you will see ;)
Treadmills are also nice but my right knee is hurting/ a bit damaged so I cannot use it to run, only to walk (fast). I also think running (on the street, normally) is bad for the knees and linkings, walking 1 hour a day is the key - my mum started to do that with a group of women in the countryside, they meet at 8 (or 7 in summer :O) and walk for 1 hour. No need to say I get amazed every time I see her (every 4-6 months) - soon I won’t SEE her anymore :P
And then yes, all kind of Swedish gymnastics (at least we call it Swedish gymnastics in Spain), abdominals and such.
So let’s say a mix of everything together with a diet is the way out :)
sweet_stalker57 said on January 13, 2005 06:49:

per_mson said on January 15, 2005 23:16:
Hi you all!! I’m a bit heavy as well and would surely need some kilos off my belly too! Me and my girlfriend are on a quite strict diet for the moment and I hope we will have the moral to keep it up for some time now. Loosing weight is nothing you do in a week or two, that has to take time.
All those wonder cures in loosing weight could maybe work, but only for a short period of time. The only thing they do is to fool your body. If you stop eating completely, or change you diet to only eating vegetables and drink water you will maybe get rid of some kilos, but they will surely be back again as soon as you start eating normally again. Trsut me, I have tried! ;-)
What you should do, at least from my experience, is to simply eat a bit less and stop eating the worst things. A bit less and less every day for say 2 weeks. A good rule is to eat until you are 90% full then stop. After this time you have used your stomach to the smaller amount of food and it is no problem anymore to keep up this amount since you feel full after the food.
But the important thing here is to still eat normal food inlcluding meat (if you are not a vegetarian of course!!)
You should also stop completely eating stuff like chocolate, chips and other greasy stuff. Also don’t drink sugar!!!!!! Most important!!! The body changes most of the sugar you get into fat, so it is not a bit better to drink sugar drinks (aka soft drinks) than to eat chips (but that I guess most people knows). Instead drink light!
Another thing to think of is to eat low fat yoghurts, drink low fat milk... they taste almost as good... ;-)
Sports is not my cup of tea, but of course it is good as long as it isn’t exaggerated. But if you are like me and hate more or less all kind of sports, then take walks. 3 times a week a´20-30 mins is enough for a start. You burn exactly as much fat when walking as running (plus that walking doesn’t destroy your back and legs...).
I also stopped driving to work and started to bike more often. I had a really old bike. Why have a new fancy bike when you can burn double the amount of fat for a 20th of the price?! ;-)))
Well, I guess all these things are pretty obvious things, but at least that was what made me loose 15 kilos in a bit more than a year. And I didn’t fool my body, cause it took me 3 years to gain 10 of them again (which I will try to loose again now). ;-)
So it is a really fool proof and cheap way to loose weight. Sure, it takes a lot of time, but you and your stomach get really used to it so after 2-3 weeks it is really not a problem anymore. Just don’t give up! :-)
LittleSpooky said on January 16, 2005 04:11:
Sweets: What lake? That thing’s receeding faster than a man’s hairline!!!!
ally77 said on January 16, 2005 09:23:
@ per_mson That is the sensible way and the way in which the weight will stay off, I have to admit, never really in the past tried to diet but now I have some other problems sorted 2005 will be the year I lose the weight, and I’ve already dropped many pounds (18lbs) since January 1st, I was concerned it was too much too quick so I went to see my doctor the other day, he said all was fine it was the combination of stopping eating all the crap and the exercise I am doing, so I feel good, and strange as it may sound 18lbs down and I do not feel as stressed or as sleepy as I was!!! I go shopping now and I head for the fruit and veg section rather than the cakes and crisps! :) I expect now my body as had over two weeks of intial shock it ain’t getting anymore McDonalds and Pizza, it will adjust to the new diet it’s getting and the weight loss will slow to around 5lbs a week or less!
Now it’s Sunday morning, and I am off to the gym!
per_mson said on January 16, 2005 10:56:
@ally: Good luck and keep up your good work!! :-)) Just don’t be dissapointed or give it up if the weight suddenly stops going down. This is normal and it will continue going down later! The weight is going down in periods. At the beginning you are dropping a lot, then it stops for some time, then you loose a bit less, then it stops... then it is going on like that... at least it was like that for me. It is a bit like a stair in a way if you see what I mean...

I want to get fit too- not because I’m at risk of diabetes, but because I have a very bad back and need to strengthen my muscles. I have to start swimming- which is not something I particularly like doing. I could also do with losing about 5kg.
