Just had my copy of “the change” in my mailbox today from CDON. I was surprised it was delivered so fast. I already had a first listen this morning and Marie sounds very good. Can’t tell my favourite songs yet, have to hear them all a few times. I already knew Bad Moon of course, that’s my favourite today :) A pure album with pure songs, that’s for sure.
Go Marie!
Kiwein1 said on November 2, 2004 12:18:

Hello to everyone:
I have received the “Äntligen” cd single today. The first time I listened to that song, I fell in love!!! Now, it’s my favorite Marie song. Is there some song like that on “The Change”? I wish...
Sparvogamarie said on November 2, 2004 18:29:
I agree with Cowboy, if you give the album a chance it will grow on you. I think it’s such a difference from anything she’s done before that at first you might think it’s so weird that you can’t accept it. I think a lot of us (myself included) were hoping for DSR 2, but we didn’t get it. So some ppl were disappointed with The Change, but you might find that after a few plays you start to notice bits and pieces that you didn’t hear before, you start to really listen to the lyrics and get the meaning, and you find yourself singing the songs in your head during the day. And then you start to appreciate the various musical styles and the fact that is IS so different from anything Marie or Rox have ever done and respect her for trying some new things.
I love All You Gotta Do is Feel, and Mother is really growing on me though in the beginning I didn’t like it. Actually I’d love to start a discussion about Mother: even though Micke wrote it, do you think he wrote it for Marie, or about his own mother? Cos the song seems to be Marie talking to HER mother, I was wondering if Micke knows her so well that he wrote Marie’s feelings towards her own mother. It’s such a personal album, it would be strange for her to be singing about Micke’s mother! What do you guys think?
Vixzter said on November 2, 2004 18:43:
i have to say my first listen i was like O_o but i’m not sure wether that was coz its in english and i understood it all (finanly!) or what... but i like it so much now that i’m trying not to listen too much as i dont want to end up spoiling it for myself.
maries voice is great, the guitars are fantastic as are the keyboards, piano, strings etc.
although i can see why some ppls wont get it ;-)
rox4ever said on November 2, 2004 18:59:
Are there any? My first impression: crap. My second chance: the same.
I like Marie´s voice, but the album is boooooooring.
By the way. You can download it in a famous p2p program (if I don´t say the name maybe this thread is not going to be deleted). ; ) Just a joke!!! Go and buy it! (I don´t recommend you to do it, but c´mon, it’s Roxette & related). Have a nice day!
Sparvogamarie said on November 2, 2004 19:21:
It takes more than 2 listens, I would say. You have to get used to the new sound and you can’t do that in 2 listens. You also have to open your mind a little....Rox fans have been spoiled a little over the years because Per just writes the same song 250 times and gives it a new title, so we get kinda used to hearing the same thing over and over and we’re shocked by something new.
Sparvogamarie said on November 2, 2004 19:26:
Well it’s true...they play GT on the radio a lot here, and I’ll hear the beginning of a song and say “Hey that’s När Vi Två Blir En” but it’s actually Solken or Tuffa Tider or one of the other bloody songs who can tell the difference??
The other point about The Change is that it’s a very MATURE album.....I won’t finish that sentence but I think you know where I’m going ;)
Kiwein1 said on November 2, 2004 19:30:
I really do think that Per’s writing skills have lost quality through the years - I think Mazarin and Finn Fem Fel do sound SO similar! It’s just always the same in the end. Joyride was a great album, CBB was, too - but with the years it’s getting worse. If you call an album boring then it’s Room Service or Finn Fem Fel, but NOT The Change, no. :)
Sparvogamarie said on November 2, 2004 19:41:
If you take a few of Per’s songs on their own, you’d say he’s a great song writer, and for sure he has written some brilliant songs, and his new stuff isn’t bad or anything... I mean, Tuffa Tider is a catchy little tune, really likeable, Mazarin had some great tracks. But when you put them all together you just start to say “....um, haven’t I heard this somewhere before????” Even if you don’t necessarily LIKE Marie’s stuff, at least she doesn’t rehash the same thing over and over. Someone said here that her albums sounded alike, and that’s such crap! Mamas Barn was punk, HV is 80’s pop rock, DSV is mellow, ES is thoughtful pop, DSR is the dark moody album, IETSV is the middle of the road album and The Change is an experimentation of every style you can think of. Say what you like about Marie but you can’t say she always does the same thing.
rox4ever said on November 2, 2004 19:42:
Maybe I´m so inmature, but I still prefer listening to the same song 250 times than getting slept listening to an album. I liked Mazarin a lot, and I liked Finn 5 Fell, because I like what Per does, his style. I never liked Marie´s songs so much, but I have to say there are some tracks I like (Tro, Äntligen...). She has always made a very sad music, which I didn´t dislike, but I still say, FOR ME this album is boring.
Zelda said on November 2, 2004 19:47:
When does Marie sing these songs?
Before or after her illness?
LoneGunman said on November 2, 2004 20:10:
C´mon... “Mazarin” boring ? “Finn 5 Fel” boring ? Oh, please... these albuns are mastrpieces. Per songs are all the same ? Well, at least I don´t need to listen to it 1000000 times to like it.
And if you can listen the intro of “Nar Vi Tva Blir En” and think it´s “Tuffa Tider” (or the other way around), you´re deaf ! Maybe that´s why you like “The Change”.
All the best
LoneGunman
Kiwein1 said on November 2, 2004 20:16:
Wow, now you’re getting personal, eh? :)
Mazarin is a great album, I love it - unfortunately FFF sounds exactly the same...*yawn*.
I rather listen to an album more times until I like it than listening to it once and find that it’s nothing special. ;)
Faezdel said on November 2, 2004 20:20:
I don’t think the album is boring. Per should grow-up, he thinks he’s Peter Pan. Marie’s album are very personal. Per doesn’t put his feelings in his songs. He has becoming too commercial to my taste...
StillFar said on November 2, 2004 20:29:
Per wrote some amazing songs..no question, but I have to agree with some people here. Something happened over the last couple of years. On one hand I do be believe he is very keen on recycling stuff on the other hand he’s almost 50 and still writes very similar melodies/lyrics to when he was in his 20s...somehow it seems that while I changed a lot since I first started to listen to his music, he didn’t really change all that much :(
Faezdel said on November 2, 2004 20:33:
@LoneGunman: Do you like tough, Mickey Mouse-ish Per’s voice??? I like him as a songwitter, but no as a solo singer. I have his 3 first albums, and I have played them no more than 3 times. But I play Marie’s albums almost every day...
And let me say something. Per without Marie singing his songs would be an unknown guy, maybe just known in Sweden, but no more than that.
@Stillfar: He always have recycled songs. If you have “The Lonely Boys” cd, you can listen the track #6, “I Wanna Be With You”.
”...I wanna be with you, oh babe. I wanna be with you all night” has the same melody on “You’re sliding down a dream, oh yea. When nights are born in blue, that’s the truth” from Fingertips. And the rest of the song is “Like Lovers Do” (“Let me kiss away your troubles, the cold and lonely night...” melody)!
rox4ever said on November 2, 2004 21:15:
Faezdel: “And let me say something. Per without Marie singing his songs would be an unknown guy, maybe just known in Sweden, but no more than that.”
Who do you think Marie would be without Per? An international pop star? C´mon and get up! They wouldn´t have been anybody without each other. Per puts the lyrics and Marie puts the singing. Per had a flop with The world according to Gessle as well as Marie is going to have a flop with The Change. And I think Marie has some advantage, because she is now more known now because of her illness, and there is a story behind this album, that´s going to make her sell more albums.
And I still say this album is boorrring. ; )

I personally don’t like “Mazarin” at all, I think it’s plain boring, nothing new at all, it’s like hearing the stuff Per had written in the past years recycled - with exceptions. Besides that hearing his voice gets dead boring. I really tried to give the album a chance, more than once, but after the 2nd song it’s skip skip skip.
GT’s F5F is another story ;) But that is of course because the 5 guys together have something that can’t be reached by anyone else - even though I prefer GTs first albums, of course.

theres always going to be different points of view here, i hope it doesnt turn into another bashing contest....so anyways, i prefer The Change to FFF a: coz its in English and b: coz i like marie more, this doesnt mean to say that FFF is crap or boring or rubbish its just it doesnt do anything for me.
Mazarin was good for a while, i listened non stop for about 2 months and now i dont listen at all. i’m just glad of fresh new stuff from marie :P maybe ive had gessle overload or something.
Faezdel said on November 2, 2004 22:43:
@Rox4ever: let me say something.
Marie’s first album’s were very popular in Sweden, and they had very good reviews. Per’s albums (specially “Scener”) were a total flop!
Vixzter said on November 2, 2004 22:50:
@rox4ever: ure obviously a per fan, we’re all here coz we like roxette/per/marie whatever. atleast give marie some credit instead of just bashing away.
without either of them there would be no roxette so ;P
its not about the album being a flop, the fact that its been released is the achivement here not record sales.
if it bores u then go play F5F.
tevensso (moderator) said on November 2, 2004 23:23:
Off topic: Per’s solo albums were not flops in Sweden. (Neither were Marie’s).
And secondly, I wish Per & Marie never had formed Roxette, if they hadn’t we wouldn’t have to discuss stupid things like this. This thread is about what songs you like on The Change, NOT about what you DON’T like about other albums.
So stick to it please.

Sparvogamarie said on November 3, 2004 13:20:
Funny how during all the Marie bashing topics, no matter how irrelevant, a moderator never stepped in until Per started getting bashed....
I think this Marie vs Per crap is stupid also, but after reading nothing but trash against Marie for quite a while I thought it was time that Per got a turn. Of course it’s pointless because ppl are gonna like things depending on their own tastes and no amount of arguing is gonna make someone like a song or whatever. The big problem in the Rox world is that their careers are split into so many things that you have Rox fans, Marie fans, Per fans, GT fans and “all of the above” fans so it’s inevitable that ppl are gonna have different views.
I’m just really tired of ppl who have just slagged off Marie’s album without even giving it a chance. I am one of the ppl who didn’t really like it in the beginning but after a few plays I started to “get it” so I wanted to tell other fans that the album can really grow on you if you give it a chance.
I think that’s relevant to the topic because maybe some ppl will find they do like some songs on The Change and can then share them in this topic. If they still don’t like it, that’s just fine with me, but I’m saying you can’t call it crap after just one listen.
Sparvogamarie said on November 3, 2004 13:44:
I started a topic for the “irrelevant” discussion cos I actually think it was interesting.
Back on topic: Love 2 Live is a funny song!

ok kids if we’re gonna knock around whats right and wrong with both artists ask yourselves this, how long can you continue to write increadibly amaxing songs. Per has supposedly written in excess of 5500 songs or more. even pronce as grerat an artists as he is has had huge slumps as an aritst. Aerosmith has recyicled alot fo their sound as have metallica, sdo is it so bad that per takes the beat of dressed for success and turns it into 4 or 5 different songs, it still go toyuo to buy a record and you still find yourself singing along thats what matters the damn music not rewtarded rivalries

Today’s check: The more I listen to it, the more I love it. And I am discovering new things in the album ;)

ljus said on November 5, 2004 11:24:
i’m curious about her English (still waiting for the album to arrive!)... as a native speaker, does it sound alright or do you have to force yourself to just listen to the music, cause the lyrics would spoil the songs?
Rich-UK said on November 5, 2004 12:13:
I think that the lyrics are very good, and I definitely appreciate them in addition the music, although purists may criticise the number of grammatical errors (or deviations from standard written English, if you prefer). Rich
Sparvogamarie said on November 5, 2004 16:35:
Rich is right, there are a few mistakes such as “why do my past just have to leave” (should be DOES, not do) and “peoples been telling me”. But the lyrics are quite good, there’s nothing that sounds stupid except for the line about cruising the seventh wave which always makes me cringe!
Rich-UK said on November 5, 2004 17:19:
What’s wrong with cruising the seventh wave? I really like that :-) Rich
ljus said on November 5, 2004 17:44:
i may be a purist and this album is certainly not about correct grammar, but why the hell don’t they check on these things? as marie said, it cost so much energy and was such a fight to get the album done and survive... but why then don’t they hire someone or give the lyrics to any English-speaking friend of them?!? i mean, noone said she must do an English album?
strange
don’t get me wrong. I love Marie’s music and like what I heard so far... it’s just that some of the lyrics didn’t sound right (even for me as a non-native speaker!!!)
of course its not the main point about the release. it’s wonderful that she’s back and that her voice sounds so strong and beautiful (again, from what I’ve heard so far... ordered the cd with cd-wow... shouldn’t have done that... still waiting!). still, I find it a bit disappointing to have obvious grammar mistakes in it, cause with little effort they could have avoided them...
ljus said on November 5, 2004 17:46:
i actually love ’cruising the seventh wave’... it sounds abstract, but yeah, what’s wrong with it?
Kiwein1 said on November 5, 2004 17:56:
I always get angry when I hear “you can be so much real” - in the booklet you’ll find “you can be so much more real” - but why the hell doesn’t she sing that??? ;)
Sparvogamarie said on November 5, 2004 18:49:
Kiwein: actually you are totally right! When I was thinking of examples for mistakes that was the first one that came to mind, but when I looked in the book it said more real which is grammatically correct!
Ljus: I absolutely agree with you and I was thinking the same thing. They should get an English speaking person to check lyrics. The same thing happened on Room Service, there was some shocking grammar on there “I wish you’d never stop to make my head go pop” and “consider to stay” - what the hell is that?!! An English speaker would have noticed that mistake in 5 seconds! I could believe that Per is so confident with English that he doesn’t think he makes mistakes, but I’m surprised Marie didn’t get her lyrics checked when she knows her English is not perfect!
m-cvk said on November 5, 2004 18:58:

Sparvogamarie said on November 5, 2004 19:00:
It’s totally wrong grammar, it should be “I wish you’d never stop MAKING my head go pop” and “consider STAYING”. You can’t use the word “to” the way they have used it.

Hi Folks!
Having played The Change for over a week, I now think that it’s a very good album. There are 9 songs I really like - in order:
1. Bad Moon
2. Mother
3. A Table In The Sun
4. All About You
5. 2:nd Chance
6. April Snow
7. The Good Life
8. All You’ve Gotta Go Is Feel
9. Many Times
On the other hand... Love 2 Live sounds like a bad Sheryl Crow reject, I don’t really like The Change yet, and I think the orchestra version is horrible - but maybe I’ll enjoy these tracks in due course. All in all, the album is definitely a grower and I very much like what I hear, so thumbs up from me!
All the best, Rich ;-)

Huh, I live 10 minutes down the road from Marie and I can’t get a signed CD *sobs* Well I could, but won’t :(( Waahhh I want one! Let’s start a petition to make her do an in store signing appearance! :) Us Rox fans have a petition for everything else, why not that? =)
ncurran said on November 8, 2004 16:13:
I just got the CD today, so ive only listen to it a few times...but sounds fantastic so far....very different from what shes done before, and much more upbeat than i wouldve expected...a little too early for me to pick out favourites yet, though i really love a table in the sun still (I’d only heard the clip before)
Had a real job listening to the CD on my PC though...even now i managed to copy the songs to itunes, but on a few of the songs i can hear a second or 2 at the end of a song from the next song....a little annoying.
Hotblooded said on November 9, 2004 03:38:
Well day two with the album and I have to say I love ’The Change’ both versions are brilliant...the first is so dark and warped almost scary! And she sounds a little off in the verses but almost like that is intentional to add to that moment when it happened, the moment she found out about the cancer and her feelings. Then the orchestra version is like 2 years later after the storm of the initial diagnosis and even though things aren’t normal they are better mmmm....I love it!
Table in the Sun is amazing too :) I have to say I love her voice in the cover song soooo good that first line is :)
@Sparvoga: Well I got mine from the Fanclub and when I opened the package I notice the booklet was missing and I was like NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I really wanted to read the lyrics as I listened but then I had a letter saying the first 20 orders are getting their booklet signed by Marie and then they will send it out so I was like yeah I can understand that ;) I ended up getting the lyrics from the roxette.nl so it was fine.

Finally got the album (both editions, of course for this addict) yesterday. Have been listening to it continuously during the last day and all I can say is that the album simply grows on me the more I listen to it... would be gr8 to set some more of such in the future. Also nice meaningful lyrics.
Any favs? All of the songs actually.

@Auryte: I didn’t know anything about the fanclub doing that so it was a nice surprise!
I’m so glad to have discovered Marie’s music soooo much deeper than Roxette and definitely this is an album that will stand the test of time unlike HAND and RS!
I remember reading someone say that ’Bad Moon’ was probably a roxette reject!!! Bullshit I would reject so many Per songs before rejecting that one, it’s awesome!

yesterday, i finally got my cd! wow... it’s definately different from all her stuff or Roxette... my boyfriend listened to a couple of songs and knowing her other Swedish stuff he was absolutely amazed about how the songs and her voice sound so energetic and powerful!!! I guess many of us expected a personal, as in introvert album, where what we got is a still very personal ’singing session’ by Marie and band... I think most of it sounds a bit like a live recording, like with the playful electric guitar and her way of singing... together with the darker or more personal tunes (the change, table in the sun) this is a great compilation, I think... (even if I don’t like every single song)
’the change’ remains my favourite song. The first version is really creepy and very powerful. (sparvöga: i now think that song (both versions) together with table in the sun says it all... you probably can’t write 12 songs about yourself in such a situation, and these two songs (or 3 if you count the orchestra, which i regard as a different song), are so powerful and private (to me at least) that I don’t need or dare to ask for anything else from her. :)
again about the orchestra version: it shows how good the actual song is, cause to make such a complete different version from it, shows the great potential of the song... also, the instrumentation and adaptation is really wonderful... bands and singers often use orchestra for their songs to create something special, but most of the time it just sounds as a pop song with orchestra... this version is very round... the orchestra comes very natural and adds to the song without ruining it... it’s fantastically arranged... (doesn’t mean you have to like it of course ;)
:) happy right now!

i’m still loving all the songs....still to early to pick out favourites....but probably the worst song is Many Times, catchy chorus, but the verse seems almost too simple...i cant really explain what it mean, but all the other songs are great

’many times’ has this habbit of embedding itself in ure head so u sing the chorus all day ;-)

Ljus: hmm, I didn’t look at it that way, you could be right that it would be a bit much to have the whole album about her illness! I can see that when it’s her first English album she doesn’t want to scare everyone away with her dark music! But I think what would have been cool is if she wrote it like a journey, the beginning is dark and scared songs, then go through it until the end and finish with stuff like 2:nd Chance that’s positive and on the other side. DSR was a little like that, it was almost telling a story and I loved it for that. But eh, no use complaining right?! We got Marie back, and at the moment she’s on the cover of a magazine so there’s posters of her sweet face all over Stockholm!! Yay!
ljus said on November 9, 2004 18:56:
hmmm... ya, i would have also preferred another dsr... but then, dsr, I believe, although it seems more personal, is much more of an artistic concept, rather than songs about Marie’s real life. I think you have to be very careful about the so-called lyrical ’I’... where it suggests the artist behind it, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it IS the real person who produces the art. Artistic and artificial are term-related. So, where dsr as a piece of art seems more appealing or even precious, The Change could actually be the more personal or intimate album for Marie. dsr was probably inspired by events and circumstances in Marie’s life... but The Change is capturing a part of Marie’s real life, which was going to the studio and singing, instead of giving in the horrible illness...
as I said previously, when I listen to the album I think of it as a ’live document’ (singing/recording sessions) of ’real’ Marie fighting for her life... so, the paradoxy could be that although as an artistic concept the album may be a little disappointing (for us dsr fans), it is much more about the real Marie and her fight than we think...
oh god, does this make any sense!?!?! :)”“”“”!!!
also, I don’t think she cared about not making a dark album in English. I believe that if you have to face something so horrendous as she did, you can’t survive with all darkness around you... she needed some light and energy and I guess that was also her friends’ and husband’s intention in recording some of the tunes... maybe we find out more in the documentary...
hope my long posts don’t get too boring or repetitive... but it’s so inspiring to discuss with you...
ncurran said on November 9, 2004 18:59:
ljus...i never thought about it that way....that does make a lot of sense :)
Sparvogamarie said on November 9, 2004 19:28:
Don’t worry, you make sense :)
Though in the case of DSR, it was a personal album about her relationship with Johan Kinde (who is a gigantic a**hole if I may say so). So if you listen, in the beginning she’s saying stuff like “I don’t know if there’s an ’us’ or just me”, she’s like uncertain about the relationship and then you have all these songs about her searching for answers. Finally she gets pissed off at him in Vem Tror and gets rid of the jerk (yay Marie), gets pretty depressed about it in Novemberdan and finishes with meeting Micke in Till Sist. So I love that, it’s a story and it’s a true story, and she said herself it was like writing a diary for her. But maybe she feels like “been there, done that” so she did something different with Change.
ljus said on November 9, 2004 19:52:
you make sense too :)
though writing diary I regard as an intellectual dramatisation of feelings and thoughts... it’s abstract (no matter how real it feels for any reader)
her being in the studio singing is her being in the studio singing
but this is going too far :o)!!! and i think we both made our points pretty clear... but it’s an interesting (philosophical) question to talk about reality and reality in art especially.
i think art and artistic concept has to offer more than a 1:1 copy of ’reality’... it needs to bring in different levels, symbolism and abstraction... the magical stuff!!! and thats why dsr is so powerful i think. cause it’s a highly artistic concept album. of course it is also about aesthetics. while you and I probably love the poetry of dsr and the slightly ethereal (i mean it in a nice way) musical atmosphere, other people prefer something totally different.
p.s.: there you go! your initial topic returned to another wonderful discussion (though we’re slightly using track and writing similar stuff in both topics)

Marie: you can order at ginza.se, they claim they will send signed CD... but I need somebody to get the signed CD and tell me if it’s the real signature, that picture looks WEIRD ;)
Anyway, I prefer to have her sign any CD in front of me and to me, it’s more special ;)

Hmm I’d be suspicious about that Ginza thing too. At least I know the fc autographs are genuine, unless Marie gets the nanny to sign for her.
I prefer personal autographs too but then again I hate shoving something in Marie’s face and treating her like a signing machine! Then she doesn’t talk because she’s busy writing (have you ever seen Marie try to write and talk at the same time? She forgets how to talk, or worse she forgets how to write and she spells her name Maire!)
Jud (moderator) said on November 10, 2004 19:09:
LOL!! I had to tell her Connie’s and my name at least 3 times before she got it right AND wrote it right.. she kept on talking and not concentrating on the signing :D
Sparvogamarie said on November 10, 2004 19:12:
Oh spelling names is the worst. Even if she’s concentrating, she can’t do it. Once I was asking her to spell Cisca, and after every letter she would show it to me and say “C, like this, is that right? Ok...I, is that right, S...is that ok?” She’s so cute, and if she makes a mistake she’s really upset and like “Oh I’m SOOOO sorry” and we don’t even care so long as she’s talking to us haha!
Oops off topic...ahh best song from the change today is All you gotta do is feel. Oooh this is on topic...well sort of, my Swedish teacher has asked me to bring in The Change for the class to listen to a Swedish singer. I said it’s in English so they won’t learn anything, but my teacher is a big Marie fan and she wants to hear it haha!
Jud (moderator) said on November 10, 2004 19:20:
LOL! but she has swedish albums :P maybe you should take TC + IETSV or DSR ;) and then u can play a couple of songs “in english” and “på svenska” ;)

I didn’t bring my MF cds to Sweden with me, they’re all on mini disc! But I do have Äntligen so maybe they can listen to that!

My fave:
BAD MOON
A TABLE IN THE SUN
MOTHER
THE CHANGE/THE GOOD LIFE
For me this is the best album from Marie!!! It contains a lot of little masterpieces. Can’t stop to hear it everyday...
Anyway, I think Marie’s voice is extremely powerful and full of feelings in every single song and so I think there aren’t filler songs.
Especially some lyrics are very meaningful like ATITS, The Change and Mother...they give me goose-flesh everytime I hear them.
The Good Life is full of passion for life, excellent the way she sings this song...
Bad Moon sounds very Roxettish and maybe this is the reason I love it!
And some Bolyos’ songs like All About You, AYGDIF and Many Times are very good too.
I really enjoy this album! =)))
Good work Marie!!!

I’ve had this album for a few days now and I’m definitely preferring Marie’s songs to Micke’s, with the exception of “Mother,” which is fantastic (and should be the next single, if there is one). My faves:
1) Bad Moon - by far and away the best on the album
2) Mother
3) 2nd Chance
4) The Good Life
5) The Change - a hard song to listen to, but so powerful...

I’ve listened to it once all the way thru and i just don’t know what to say. I think its just very different to the stuff that i’m used to. Maybe after a few listens i’ll enjoy it more.
But i really do like Bad Moon, AYGDIF, love 2 live and many times. And Marie sounds great :-D
