I had media this morning for 3 hours... we were given a prerelease so I knew what I had to write, but spent hours last night memorising it. Also learnt be schedule by being very sneaky with numbers... heheh
MiracleMan said on May 27, 2004 16:23:
Okay, Zaine: for my American understanding, what are O levels? GCSE? I’ve never gotten the hang of learning the English school level system, like what forms are etc.
ally77 said on May 27, 2004 16:40:
@ MM, GCSE’s you officially leave school at 16, 15 some depending on when your birthday falls
(me!!!), You take the exams around May & June, and get the results in August. Most people have already decided what they are doing after the GCSE’s (or O-Levels as they where called many moons ago!) You can then get a job or go onto further education, 6th form is popular usually staying at the same school and you would take A-Level, again for two years, same things, exams and results. Those that don’t do A-Levels can go to college do a course of there choice, or work, or take some kind of training enterprise!
After A-Levels at usually 18, you would go to University to do a degree or get a job!
Hope that makes sense for you MM!!

(well it was something along them lines anyways)
;)
ally77 said on May 27, 2004 21:40:
lol! and you still have that addiction now, but it’s got 4 wheels... ;)
Olympus said on May 27, 2004 21:42:
Are the ’GCSE’ exams the exams you do when your 15, or when you’re 18? Thankfully, I don’t have to woryy about exams any more - weren’t they terrible?

In Greece, they have a strange education system...
Vixzter said on May 27, 2004 21:51:
@ally77: not sure the Roxette addiction died, it just got shared with the 4 wheels one ;)
Vixzter said on May 27, 2004 21:59:
ah yea but its cool coz I can play all my Rox albums on it ;)
so it kills 2 birds with 1 stone
Olympus said on May 27, 2004 22:25:
We don’t have GCSE’s in Greece, so what are you saying that for? We do plenty of exams here tho.
ally77 said on May 28, 2004 10:27:
No I REALLY do love learning about different people’s education system...
kachina008 said on May 29, 2004 14:47:

Ally—that does clear it up a bit. I think.
The US system is more—not sure what to call it. You start Kindergarten around 5, then progress 1st grade to 5th or 6th (depending on the school) as elementary school. Then (again depending on the school system) middle school (generally 6th through 8th grades) and high school is usually 9th throgh 12th grade. Graduation is arounf 17/18 depending on birthday. (17 for me) From there you can go to college, get a job, etc. . . All this is compulsary unless one is home schooled.
I can’t imagine being told at 15/16 that I was to take exams to determine my further education (although one generally does to get into a college/university.)
In the US, college/university is a tremendous expense. Do other countries require you to pay for your own higher education? Scholarships and grants are a huge part of paying for university over here. I’d assume that placement is dependent on the results of the GCSE/O levels.
zaine said on May 31, 2004 10:31:
hey Zee, thanks man :D
MM, uni is expensive here too and getting more expensive all the time. Though I have no idea how much it is exactly, I understand that it’s a lot. I have no idea if I will go to uni. I always thought I would, but I don’t know what I would study any more. I just hope I get good enough grades to pass to 6th form next year.
But at least I have this week off for half term, though I have to go to school everyday anyway as we are doing a play up there (oh the joys of a technician lol)
MiracleMan said on May 31, 2004 17:30:
Do you get the summers off? Or is school an all year roud thing?
zaine said on May 31, 2004 20:37:
yeah we get summers off, do you guys??
6th form is where we study A-levels, either for one year or 2 depending on the course. depending on subjects/grades etc it allows your courses at uni (I think?!)
kachina008 said on May 31, 2004 20:47:
MM it’s very different from the school system in the states. there, you don’t really choose your major even in Univ, and unless you really want to do graduate work, you dont really “specialize”.
In europe/asia, students “specialize” really early. I had to pick which subjects I wanted to study as early as 14.
zaine said on May 31, 2004 21:03:
same, I was 14 when I chose my GCSE options 2 years ago. though I was nearly 15 at the time due to my crappy birth date lol
MiracleMan said on June 1, 2004 17:43:
Yes we get summers off—late May/early June through late August/Early September.
Specializing so early? How the heck does one EVER choose?
Santi said on June 1, 2004 18:19:
In Spain we used to especialize being 15, 16 and 17, because it was a gradual process. Now they’ve changed the educational plan so many times that I don’t know how it works anymore :D
ally77 said on June 1, 2004 19:15:
In my case copy my friends and thought doing what they where doing was a good idea.... result.. F**k UP your life forever!!!!
zaine said on June 2, 2004 15:45:
well I never had that problem, I’ve never been the person to copy my friends. someways that’s bad cause I stick out in the crowd so much. but y’know, I’m happy ;)
we had to take english math and all 3 sciences plus a technology (either resistant materials, graphics, food tech or textiles) a language and then any 3 others.
I ended up with:
Art, Biology, Chemistry, English, Geography, German, Graphics, Mathematics, Media Studies and physics.
Next year I want to take Art, Geography, Graphics and photography. I really wanted to do english lagnuage aswell but there was a clash in my subjects so I dont think I can do that :(
ally77 said on May 27, 2004 11:10:
Yeah good luck sweetie, thinking of you.... :)
