well as far as I know, there will be free trafic of stuff, stocks etc.. but not of people. It will still take some 8 years until citizens from these 10 countries will b able to move through Europe as the citizens of other EU countries do.
Lets see if I remember them all!
Poland - Polen (DE)
Czech republic - Tschechien
Slovakia - Slowakei
Slovenia - Slowenien
Estonia - Estland
Letonia - Lettland
Lituania - Litauen
Hungary - Ungarn
Malta - Malta
Chipre - Zypern
??

Well, guess it’s not nice, but it’s a way to avoid a mass migrations.
More to come, Bulgaria, Romania and Croatia could join us in 2007 ;)
@Judith: the list is right, except for the fact that you wrote the names of some in Spanish :D The are Latvia (Letonia), Lithuania, (Lituania) and Cyprus (Chipre) ;)

Poland is coming into EU. Generally people are happy ( I am). We know pluses and minuses of EU, we know that there would be better conditions for our start in EU. And we know that we still have a lot of things to do.
But let’s not complain too much! We’ll see what future brings to us. Hope it will be o.k.
And tonight I think most of polish towns, people are gonna celebrate at midnight with fireworks etc. It’s party night :-)
Let’s celebrate, it’s a big day in polish history! I remember how happy days were in Poland when the comunism fell, and I’m happy that now 14 years later I can be “witness” of next important and historic moment when Poland joins EU! :)

That’s cool! Italy has always been in the EU (or whatever it was called before) so I didn’t really have the chance to party about it. I belive the very first three countries were Belgium, Holland and Luxemburg (BENELUX).
It must be great to party for such a change and I will join too because I am happy for the other countries. I really support the EU, even though we all know there is a lot to do and many things are still bad, the principles of the Union are great and I hope it will get better and better.
About the new 10 countries who will join tomorrow, I didn’t know these citizens will not be able to move freely within the EU.
Would you really migrate if you had the chance?

We can move, but not to every country right from the first day. For example Great Britain or Irealnd are open since tommorow for for example polish workers. Germany or Austria are closed for now, we can’t work in there for next 7 years.
The limits are done becouse some countries are afraid. But I think they don’t have to. Sure there are some people who want to leave Poland, but I’m sure that it won’t be that much that it can be dangerous for for examle german job market. it’s all populism.
The same situationis here, people here in Poland are afraid about forigners who want to buy polish land. And also polish side made limits in this case. But it’s all stupid fear. I don’t believe that in one moment a lots of french or german farmers would come here and buy our land. It’s all stupid fear which grows in societies becouse of stupid politicians - populists.
If you asked me. If I had some really great opportunity of work abroad maybe I would go. But not forever! Maybe for 2 years? But not for whole life. But I know that this would be very hard for me to get very good job in Belgium for example. First I want to stay and work in my own country. And I think there are still a lot of people who think this way.
Maybe some young people from Poland would leave and work abroad. But it’s not that much how some people in “old” EU countries think.

The first countries to form EU (EEC by then) were 6, not 3, and they were Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, France, The Netherlands and Italy, back in 1957. Italy obviously among the first members because the EU was formed with the “Rome’s Treaty”... so...
Tomorrow is a big day not only in Poland’s History, but in the whole Europe’s History. Finally East and West meet, so let’s celebrate we’re one!!!!!!!! ;)

you can come to Austria or Germany (and I guess any other of the EU) as long as you have your visa/passport stamped every 3 months and no, you won’t get workpermit, at least not that easy.
Actually I tell you, me going from Spain to AUstria.. fine I didn’t have to go back to Spain every 3 months to get my passport stamped but it hasn’t made things easier regarding work, unless of course, I do as the (many) slovakian or polish ppl that get *any* job, at any salary and even black :S

@ Santi..I wonder what this was .... Chipre thanx for clearing that up.. thought a knew country have been invented that I ain’t heard of... ;)
@ Roxlad... I have heard stuff like that... but mainly a lot of old people worrying all the time about people coming to claim benefits and stuff, they would prefer us not to be in the EU... but they are just old! ;)
Jud (moderator) said on April 30, 2004 19:46:
hej, give me a break :D
I just slept 4 hours tonite and I have a whole mess in my mind between English, German and Spanish :P
Besides Chipre and Cyprus doesn’t differ so much.. just a bit of imagination and knowledge ;)

Hej! I’m from Hungary and yes,we going to EU!
Just 2 hours. Here are and will very many celebrations and party in all over country.

@Judith: I guessed Cyprus from “Zypern” but you totally stumped me with “Letonia”! “Latvia” never even occurred to me, even though you listed it right beside Lithuania and Estonia. Thanks for the puzzle (-:

@judith, you are correct I think. the ’free movement of goods’ provisions take effect immediately. however, free movement of workers/citizens may to some extent be restricted.
Anyways, here’s to enlargement.
HAPPY MAY 1ST 2004!!!
roxlad said on May 1, 2004 15:52:
@Santi, that’s right, I wasn’t born at that time. I believe Benelux was a previous form of agreement between those three countries, anyway it’s nice to live in the EU!
@Ally, thank God for that! I love England and I wish it had the Euro too so that I could come and visit without changing money all the time. Eventually...
lonely_girl said on May 2, 2004 20:24:
We won’t! Probably not for the next 200 years! I’m really jealous about those who finally made it... *frustration* >:-(

@Ally,
I live in Italy so I am in the EU already but my question is about UK.
I was in London a week ago and I was watching the news. The report was nearly finished so I didn’t understand very well what the problem was but I had the impression somebody in UK wants to unjoin the EU. Do you know anything about it?
