Roxette has weak vocals??? Yeah, right!
Marie might not hit the highest pitch again, but certainly she (OR Per) is not going weak!
Blah to U!

here in poland we do not have many bands that are recording in english, but you have to check out this one:
myslovitz
they recorded a lot of great songs. some of them were translated into english and recorded again. they play great music, i could compare them to kent or radiohead, but they’ve got their own style.
if you want, i can put some songs of them somewhere in the net. let me know!

All bands in Costa Rica play in Spanish, but there was a band named Unexpected who played in English many years ago. Anyway, in Spanish there are very good bands here, like Evolución, Kadeho and Suite Doble.

http://dailyr.web1000.com/otros.htm
Astor Piazzolla (he made something called “neotango”)
http://www.piazzolla.org/video.html
Wich I’m sure I can find groups from any country in the world playing his music ;)
Rata Blanca (“Classic” metal)
Here’s a low quality sample:

I recommend listening to the guitar solo of that song, it’s my all time favourite.
Then there’s
Divididos
Soda Stereo
Los redonditos de Ricota
Charly García
La Renga
Los piojos

From Norway:
- a-ha (still going strong like Roxette)
- Lene Marlin (melancolic pop)
- Venke Knutson (up and coming, very catchy rockpop)
- Paris (sadly lost/broke her record contract)
- Return (some 80’s band, but their songs keep getting more popular by the years, even tough they havne’t done anything in the last 10 years er so. Kind of like Gyllene Tider, but not that big!)
- Briskeby
- Turbonegro (not quite me)
- Dimmu Borgir (not my type for sure)
- Christine Guldbrandsen (what a voice, can be compared to Celine DIon, Whitney Houston etc)
- Karin Park (actually from Sweden, but fell in love with the Bergen dialect and moved here instantly)
- Maria Mena
- Maria Arredondo
- Kurt Nilsen (world idol winner)
Can’t wait for Kurt Nilsen and Bryan Adams concert on Brann stadium here in Bergen June 1st! And 3 days later, a-ha concert on the city square, profits to charity.
Jackeill said on April 22, 2004 12:44:
you’re heretic. you can’t compare rasmus to kent. they have nothing common at all.
edited:
and yes, ash are from ireland, just like i said. check out www.allmusic.com and search their database.
Kama said on April 22, 2004 14:08:
I agree you cannot compare Kent and The Rasmus.
But both of them are the best in their class. I love Kent but also like The Rasmus, they are not that bad I think. If somebody has to take first places on the charts( when it’s not Roxette) it would be better if at least bands like The Rasmus did it, than shit like B. Spears.
DaminehGessle said on April 22, 2004 18:29:
Jackeill: YOu cannot tell people their opinion is wrong. Music is very subjective and we all love different styles of music, one that better suits our mood. So don’t go around telling people their favourite bands suck!

@Damineh: yes, music is subiective, but there are some borders that cannot be crossed. there is nothing ambitious and new in music performed by the rasmus. besides, they have weak melodies and vocals. i can’t find anything good about them...
roxette belongs to the same group, but per writes better music.
whole this pop-music is crap. i turned into alternative recently. and it occured, that alt-rock is quite a big and deep music-genre with lots of great bands.
pop is weak. believe me. pop is dead. listen to radiohead.
;)
Jud (moderator) said on April 22, 2004 21:15:
I agree with the fact that Rox lyrics are sometimes stupid and many easy poppy lalala melodies... but vocals? :O:O I am not so a big fan of Per voice but Marie :O:O:O I don’t care if she can’t sing that high but hell, THAT is a voice, it is unique.. can’t compare the guy in The Rasmus (I like them, already liked them as supporting act ;)) or any other wannabe pop-band with Marie’s talent.. :O
PS: I have no clue what I can recommend you from Spain. Most stuff I know sucks, well there’s this Inma Serrano and Rosana but.. I never liked Spanish music so much..
Austrian.. eh.. uh.. what a joke :D Frendrich? :D (however you write it)...

The past 3 years I’ve listened to a lot of Belgian Music. I would highly recommend these (and i’m not Belgian):
Sylver
Milk Inc
Ian Van Dahl
Netherlands:
4 Strings
Also this Danish performers:
DJ Encore feat Engelina - Great Commercial Dance/Pop, many Good songs
From Switzerland I liked
Lunik
Also Germany makes some Great Commercial Synth/Dance/Pop (in English) like:
Fragma
Camouflage
Marc Et Claude
De/Vision
Wolfsheim
Boytronic
Culture Beat
X-Perience
ATB - I did NOT like his stuff before, but then he Collaborated with Canadian Pop/Rock group “Wild Strawberries” (some here might know them). So Basically his “Addicted to Music” album came out Very Good, it features Vocals of the Wild Strawberries vocalist on like 6 Great songs :)
In Grid - an Italian lady singing Good Dance/Pop In French. Great stuff, how can one not enjoy “Tu Es Foutu” or whatever :)
Norway - A-Ha is Good, also Ice
From Russia - I know only 2 English speaking bands
Tatu
Plazma - nice Synthy Pop
.....And I was born in Former Soviet Union (for those interested) :)

LOL! Soz, Yes, Ash is from Ireland (the 1977 producer, Owen Morris is Welsh - bit of a mixup there) - who cares? They’re f*kin BRILLIANT!!! Can’t wait to get the new album!
About The Rasmus vs Kent - does it matter? It’s all about personal taste. It’s all about personal taste, isn’t it. When I compared the 2, i did it in accordance to their sound - f*ck lyrics. If we had to go around listening to lyrics instead of melody we would never listen to Roxette!!! And Radiohead would’ve been bigger than the Beatles! The Rasmus has fabulous catchy songs - they’re a harder version of Roxette (should I rather say). And my god, can the lad sing or what? I love a husky voice. Yum.
@ stunt101sista : how about a list of “unknown” bands/artists. There are tons of them that I adore! The US has some great non-top40 acts.
Cheers

You know what I just realised? That list almost looks like a list I could have written - except in my case it’d be a list with artists I won’t listen to unless I’m forced to... *g*
(Well, that might have to do with the fact I’m not exactly fond of hiphop or rap ;-))
annorlunda said on April 23, 2004 14:30:

although there is som hiphop i like... but only a very special kind (german thomas d. for example)

the Beautiful South are very underated but have always been one of my favourites, although they have a new female vocalist now....
Also spunge if you like ska punk.
Lost prophets new album is great but I think they are Welsh.
I am Kloot are kind of folk/rock.
Elbow are as depressing as f*** (so my house mate says) but worth listening to.
The Flaming Lips we think are English are enteraining.
Give me some time and I’ll think of some more....

Ireland is filled to the brim with delightfully sweet singer/song-writters that don’t get enough recognition worldwide. To lovers of truely beautiful acoustic music...
Damien Rice (solo singer/song-writter)
The Frames (brilliant band, you’d swear they sounded American - but, in a good way!)
... and then, of couse... you have some of the best bands that were ever in existance!
Thin Lizzy...
U2...
The Cranberries...
... The list could go on and on and on...

Here are some of Canada’s best, in my humble opinion:
- Tragically Hip
- Sam Roberts
- Blue Rodeo
- Sloan
- Sarah Harmer
There are a few more internationally known Canadian artists like Céline and Shania, but I wouldn’t exactly call them *the best*.
stunt101sista said on May 1, 2004 16:36:
How can u not call Celine the best? Have you ever listened to how powerful her voice is?

There´s not much...
Alkbottle(rockband, singing in german)
EAV(only interesting for people who understand german)
Falco

As I said, it’s just my opinion. Céline has an awesome voice but she picks crap songs to sing. I liked her much more in the old days when she sang in French and wasn’t so overproduced.

I don’t like Finnish music at all. Here isn’t any good band or artists. I have only 2 Finnish records; Rauli “Badding” Somerjoki - Täs on Rauli, moi and Don Huonot - Hyvää yötä ja huomenta.

@mari: not even finnish music sung in english?? I think there’s a lot of great stuff...
I even own 2 1/2 CDs with guys singing in Finnish without understanding more Finnish than just a few words (Eläkeläiset - Humppa-Akatemia, M.A. Numminen - Dägä däga (this one is in Finnish, German, Swedish and who knows what else .. ;-) - even seen him live - he’s crazy) and Zen Café - Idiootti)... but in my opinion there are more creative people in Finland...

Austrian?
Well I have albums by 2 English-Speaking Austrian bands
80’s
Joy - Very Nice 80’s Pop/Dance/Disco band with Great songs like “Valerie”, “Hello”, “Touch By Touch”, “Darling”, “Classical Love songs”, “I’m in Love” (last one sounds a bit like 80’s Roxette)
90’s
Rimini Project - great Pop/Dance/Synth songs (Must for all ABBA/Ace of Base fans)
“Heartbeat” 2002 - their Best album with Great songs like No More Goodbye, I call the Sun, Scream My Name, I Remeber You Like Yesterday, To Be or not to Be
Songs sound as Good as their titles ;)
“Dance Balance” 2001 - a bit weaker, but has great songs like SOS, Forever, Away, Can I Have this dance, Moving around
This is Enough for me to give a lot of respect to Austrian music. It’s better stuff than Madonna or J Lo or whatever could ever come up with :) :)
carbon_boy said on May 4, 2004 07:39:
@ Xarrr - they both released new albums in the past couple of months. The 2nd single of JJ’s album was quite good. I just cant stand Art, the lead singer. He’s such a prick. The new JJ album is called “The Bootleg Album” - how original. SNK still rules!

So what would u recommed to foregneirs to check out from your own country?
Well, as for now, I would have to say The Rasmus (from Finland) since their “Funeral Song” with that cello-sound & melancholy brilliantism! They’re alright also otherwise..
