Goodbye, Cranberries

The Cranberries have broken up. While they were never my favourite band, I thought they were a cut above most of what’s out there. A real shame. From an Italian press conference with Dolores O’Riordan:
In a press conference in Sanremo, Italy, today at 17:30 local time, singer Dolores O’Riordan confirmed that The Cranberries have split for the foreseeable future.
When asked if The Cranberries will get back together, her frank response was, “I don’t think so, perhaps in ten years.”
She continued, “We have worked together for 13 years and now we have closed a circle. Maybe a new Cranberries album will never come out. Maybe we’ll return together in 10 years, who knows? Nothing lasts forever. The reason of this decision is that my main priority are my children. The band used to take away too much time from my life. The Cranberries were becoming only a routine. I need new things like a solo album. The album will come out in 2005 0r 2006.”
“It was all becoming a routine and I think a solo record is the only way for me to release something. At first, the boys were unhappy [with the decision]. Then I spoke to Noel Hogan and he told me that was happy, because now he has a way to discover new musical paths. We were always saying that if a day comes when it was no longer exciting or fun, we would stop. And so we have.”

Now I really thought they had split up years ago!
I didn’t mind them actually. Well, all things must come to an end.

It’s very sad to read the fans’ comments... they feel betrayed because they feel that the band made this decision a long time ago and couldn’t be bothered to tell them (their official website hasn’t been updated since September, and it says “The band is quietly working away...” which obviously isn’t the case now). It’s sad because it’s easy to imagine how I would feel if it were Roxette... I don’t imagine they’d ever make some official statement saying that they were breaking up, I’ve always guessed they’d just stop recording together one day and leave us to wonder if they’d ever work together again. And of course, they’ve already given us so many great years, and their priorities might have changed now in light of Marie’s health, so it wouldn’t be as devestating as it would be if they’d quit after the “C!B!B!” tour or something, but it would still come as very sad news nevertheless. It would be like having a piece of my world ripped away from me... it’s fun to have new music from your favourite band to look forward to, it takes away from the boredom of day-to-day life, knowing that there are great Roxette songs yet to be heard.
Wow, this is a depressing post! For the record, I *don’t* believe that Roxette are over, I believe Per and Marie when they say that Roxette will be back, and I think they’ve given us lots of reasons to believe that they will be. But this whole Cranberries thing has gotten me thinking about that sad day, whenever it is, that Roxette will be a part of the past... )-: Let’s hope it’s not for years to come!

alot of peopel saw thsi coming their last album sucked and she is recording solo material now for like 3 yrs

@coyboy: You’re right that a lot of people saw it coming, but besides Dolores’ solo pursuits, the band talked a lot about their next (sixth) album in interviews, etc. saying it was going to be a lot more experimental than previous work, etc. (ANY change to the formula would be an experiment for them!). So now it looks like none of that “experimental” material will be heard.
I didn’t think that “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” sucked, exactly... there were some excellent tracks like “Analyse,” “This is the Day,” the title track, “Never Grow Old”... but there was also some horrifyingly bad songs like the awful “Time Is Ticking Out” (with the unforgettable lyric, “What about our children then? Is there nothing left for them?” - gag me with a spoon!) and “Dying Inside,” which unfortunately got stuck in my head one day and didn’t leave for three days, and now I will NEVER listen to that song again at the risk of it happening again! I think most of the Cranberries’ albums were like that. I didn’t like the first one at all, but every one that followed had really great songs and then one that was literally unbearable (“Dying in the Sun” springs to mind...). But still... when they were good, they were good... their greatest hits album has exactly the songs I would want on it, no more and no less, and that’s the only GH I can say that’s like that for me!
Fare thee well, Cranberries... I enjoyed your bittersweet treats while they lasted... (-:

Bad news for me, I liked them a lot. Sometimes Dolores’ voice bored me, but in general I like them a lot. I’ m gonna miss them.
Things like this make think about this happening to Rox. Artists use their families as a reason to give up music, I hope it never happen to Rox, specially because of Marie’s health. I hope she won’t decide to give up and dedicate only to her family, or to solo stuff.

I think I’m jinxed! As soon as I start to like something - the artist/group either splits up or their sales go down! I have just bought their No Need To Argue album (on tape) and Stars (best of).
Shame... I was just beginning to get into them!
BTW, do you know a Website where I can listen to some of the No Need To Argue album tracks? I have it on tape, but it’s killing me not to have it on CD!

This is a sad news, I can say that they are my second fav band after Rox.
but anyway, I still think that Dolores still can make great music, since she was the writer or almost all the cranberries’s songs

buy the no need to argue full recording session edition on cd its awesome

@Small-talker: Me too! I had just discovered K’s Choice (they’re not well known in Canada, but their profile increased when they opened for the Indigo Girls) and then a year later they broke up! Of course, they’d been together for 10 years, but I only knew them for one of those )-: The good news is that they’ll almost certainly reunite in the future... they are brother and sister, after all!

OMG! Just saw this!! I knew nothing about it... I am kind of shocked... Have all their albums, always liked them... But their popularity really went down hill ever since they released their greatest hits package...It was a total flop, let alone their last studio album (which, however, featured some of their best songs ever, eg “Never Grow Old”) ...

awful news, its a great band Dolores is so good,
what happens the best groups are dissapearing whos next NO DOUBT
roxtexanet said on March 26, 2004 08:49:
Good grief! After all this time, the band suddenly updated their website (March 17th) with the “news” that the band are “taking a break” to pursue solo projects. “Taking a break” and “have broken up” are not the same thing. Now the fans don’t know what to think. Why can’t they just make an official statement one way or another and clear up this mess?!
harriej said on March 12, 2004 22:26:
A real pity, since it was a good band.
You never know if the solo-projects will become as good as the Cranberries.
