The Indigo Girls thread

Well, we’ve got Judith and me... that’s two Indigo Girls/Roxette fans... any others? I just picked up the new CD “All That We Let In” and, as usual, it’s brilliant. And, as usual, it’s Amy’s songs that have sucked me in first, and Emily’s that keep me coming back to discover new hidden treats... Judith, you’re going to love “Tether”... the title track is gorgeous (an Emily ballad with a great hook that reminds me of Sting’s “Fields of Gold” for some reason). “Perfect World” is still my favourite, but “Tether” is creeping up quickly... “Heartache for Everyone” is also fantastic, just another great IG CD in a long line of great IG CDs (-: The bonus DVD that comes with it is pretty cool too... six live tracks, four are songs from the new album + two classics... very nice bonus for a CD a line-up of armed guards couldn’t have kept me from buying (-:

I have a question. I want to know if these Indigo girls are twins, because in my country there has been a band called Indigo who released albums abroad, so I’m just wondering if it’s the same band....
Jud (moderator) said on February 20, 2004 16:48:
indeed no twins either :P

Now I see your face before me
I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island
As the sand beneath me slips
As I burn up in your pressence
And I know now how it feels
To be weaked like achilles
With you always at my heels
This bitter pill I swallow
Is the silence that I keep
It poisons me, I can’t swim free
The river is too deep
Though I am baptized by your touch
I’m no worst than most
In love withyour ghost
Just thought, I would share these beautiful lyrics. I just got the album Retrospective (after listening to some MP3s) now I am a fan.

@antz: That lyric is gorgeous, so many references to mythology and legends, just wonderful!
These are the lyrics to the saddest song I’ve ever heard and the only one that’s ever made me choke up:
“Point Hope F.O.I.A.” - A. Ray
hey little darling
there’s something that you should know
this thing is gonna outlive us all
this thing it won’t let us go
gonna take us down to nothing
gonna eat us from the inside out
and hey little darling
i don’t want you feeling the fallout
when the cancer finally took him
i was watching the trucks pull in
me and your daddy we had a job
under the ground mining uranium
some things your daddy leaves you
and there’s some things he don’t
some things are gonna be here anyhow
and some things just won’t
one thing i want you to understand
is you ain’t gotta be no mining man
i curse the day that i went down
and i pulled that shit out of the ground
ah
ah
now we were living over in nevada
that’s where your people come from
your grandma would take me and your daddy
on down to the gunnery range
we’d sit and watch the bombs blow
and when the sun goes down
all them colors running like the painted desert
and you get to see it now
them government boys had something so damn secret
they had to hide it in the desert sand
out there the skies so big
and there ain’t no mistaking it
whose got the winning hand
ah
ah
now i’ve been all the way to alaska
to a town they call point hope
where they took some of what we got down here
just to see how it would grow
i hear the lichen bought it
now it’s running through the caribou
i said soon little darling
ah you get to feel it too
you get to feel it too
ah now soon little darling
you get to feel it too
***********
Download it if you can... it was released to raise money for a charity and was only available for a short time as an MP3, so it’s a bit tricky to find, but my God, if this song doesn’t move you, nothing will. Here’s what Amy has to say about it:
amy ray from fall 2000, the official indigo girls web site:
“i wrote pt. hope over the last few years as i was thinking about the victims of the nuclear industry cycle. on our 1995 honor tour we visited alaska and supported an effort to bring more light to the situation at a place called pt. hope. this is a place where our government buried fallout material from a bomb testing site in nevada in hopes of studying its effects on the lichen-caribou-man foodchain. this secret experiment was uncovered after the freedom of information act forced the release of the records of this crime.
“i thought about where the poisonous material originated and all that had gone into bringing it to alaska and its viscious man made journey which sickened all who were touched by it. i read a haunting article about an old indian woman who remembered watching the nevada atomic bomb test as sort of an intriguing family activity, unaware of the danger and destruction to her land. i also read many testimonials of cancer ridden miners who had brought the stuff up from the earth. the nuclear industry has depended on a lack of information and the exploitation of those that have less money and power.
“now after years of sickness and environmental catastrophies, the dangers of the uranium cycle are becoming public knowledge. information is the power we hold and we must not be intimidated by an industry that has never held our health as a priority.
“we recorded this track live in august 2000. it was a very moving experience because i think all of the players got it. hope you enjoy the song.
a ray”

Just had to add that *I LOVE THE NEW ALBUM AND CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO IT* !!! I hope your birthdays are soon, Jud and coyboy!
Favourite lyric from new album:
I kicked up the dirt
And I said to my neighbour:
“We keep making it worse, we keep getting it wrong”
He tucked in his shirt
He stood a little bit straighter
“We need a few less words dear, we need a few more guns”
But will it bring us together?
Can we call from the mountain to the valley below?
Can we make it better?
Do we tether the hawk? Or do we tether the dove?
“Tether” - A. Ray
*****
God, that’s brilliant! What a beautiful way to capture the conflict I’m sure a lot of Americans struggle with... do we tether the hawk (give peace a chance) or do we tether the dove (accept the reality of a world of unrest and do what it takes to preserve [our] ideals)?
