The Movies Thread

This thread is dedicated to those who love movies, so we can recomend them, share points of view, etc. And I wannna start it talking about the movie I saw last night... just impressive: The Last Samurai.

I’ve always liked Tom Cruise’s movies, but this could be his best. Actually I didn’t expect too much because I thought it would be just another big battles movie, but it really captivated me. The battles are so cruel that I couldn’t help but crying. All the Japanese actors are great, I really identified whith their characters, and of course Tom Cruise were amazing. I didn’t feel so much in a movie since a long.

So, if you haven’t seen it I recomend it.

I don’t recommend seeing ’Scary Movie 3’. I expected a lot from this movie... I was thoroughly disappointed.
It mimics ’Signs’ and ’The Ring’, which are two of my favourite movies, so was looking forward to seeing what they did with these.
I don’t remember laughing once. It was poor.
Those that have seen the first, the ’Shakaaspear in Love’ woman, killed in the cinema, she’s in this new one... did they forget they bumped her off in the first movie?? Sheesh.

I am going to see ’Peter Pan’ next. Everyone i’ve spoken to that has seen it says it’s fantastic.

I cant wait to see Kill Bill Vol1 - the new Quenton Tarantino, and Party Monster - the new Macauly Culkin movie.

Cheers

What ever happened to Prozac Nation, I heard they turned the book into a film with some top names... it was suppose to be being released last March... but nothing! :(

I saw Scary Movie 3 last week. Surely it isn’t a movie for all tastes. I must admit I liked it, but of course it’s not a good movie at all, and it’s true that senseless part with the girl who was already killed in the first movie. It’s a funny movie if you like stupid jokes and situations like I do :-p

has anyone watched Saving Grace...good, british comedy/crime movie!
@carobon boy: Kill Bill is great, but may not be for everyones taste ;)

I LOVE the first two movies... love love love.
This new one isn’t made by the two brothers. It’s by the ’Airplane’ and ’Naked Gun’ people, so I was expecting BIG things. Fair do’s... it was semi watchable, but not funny. I did crack a smile at the Michael Jackson parts, with the, ’Oh please, she’s a girl’... and the dangling out of the window... ’See how you like it’... but I came out of the cinema disappointed. :(

@denstandigaresan, didn’t anyone tell you not to go to the cinema if there’s a 3 (and upwards) included in the title? ;)

2 Stillfar : lolzzzzzz

StillFar: WHY didn’t you tell me that before???? ;)
Actually as it goes, there is only one pt 3 of a film i’ve ever liked... Poltergeist 3.
LOTR doesn’t count... as i’ve not seen the first 2, so can’t comment on third... before anyone blabs off on how good the third one of that is.

My faves:

-A clockwork orange
-Brazil
-1984
-Amelié
-The last temptation of Christ
-Fargo

I don’t really like popcorn movies...

The English Patient
LOTR Trilogy
Truly, Madly, Deeply
Just about anything Hitchcock, especially Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, Notorious. . .

That’s a start. . .

Schindlers List
LOTR - trilogy
Notting Hill

Forrest Gump : Makes me realize that life is beautiful

Philadelphia : Makes me respect the gay people

Saving Private Ryan : The best war movie ever. the detais is so cool...

You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless In Seatle : makes me believe in long distance love

Cast Away is great too :)

can’t wait to see Polar Exprress and Lady Killer.

I don’t have favourites at all, only movies that I like... or movies that I disliked... In fact i´m not a fan of movies at all, but strangely I´ve never seen so many movies in my life than in these last two years.

But oh well, movies that caught my attention:

Brazil: (Not the American TV version, avoid it at all cost!) - brings up many up-to-date things, specially concerning the American state and war on terrorism, and alienation of a society as a whole.

1984: - State, fascism, Big Brother, everlasting war time, supresion of the “unproductive” human sides (AKA love, sex, etc.).... do I need to add anything else?

Hero (Ying xiong): Some say it’s pro-facist, others say it’s just portraying an historical fact. Giving up personal interests and even life for a common cause... even if it betrays your own personal goals.
It features everything a movie has to have for me to like it, grey zones... and no black and white, bad and good guys like mainstream thickhead Hollywood. Great photography btw.

Dancer in the dark: A musical!.... I couldn’t believe that I was watching a musical, but it had a strong message (some said it was Anti-American!!, I say it was pro-human rights), filmed in swedish landscapes, and with a surprisingly amazing performance by Björk.

As for more “light-hearted” movies, or pop-corn I´ll admit I liked
X-Men II:..... not even for the bad guys you can really say they’re bad.

Then comes the best, martial arts:

Druken Master I: Funny, and great coreography
Drunken Master II: (Fight against the evil english imperialism ;)

Iron Monkey: (robin hood-esque, and 2 good guys fight each other for a while)

and some more you wouldn’t be interested

@ StillFar : Tarantino movies are da bomb! I love everything he’s done - except for the “2nd half” of From Dusk Til Dawn - bleh!

Well, there are a lot of great movies...
Here just some of them:
- Top Gun
- I Know What You Did Last Summer
- Scream
- Independence Day
- Seven Years In Thibet
- Seven
- E.T.
- Final Destination
- Cast Away
- Terminator
- Star Wars

carbon_boy, “Threesome” is a great movie!! It was my favourite movie for years, I really identified with Eddie, the main character interpreted by Josh Charles. Because of that movie I became a fan of Josh, Stephen Baldwin and Lara Flynn Boyle, but in time I’ve lost their latest movies.

Well, this movie is from almost 10 years ago and still my second fave, after “Titanic”. Love the final speech when Eddie says that sometimes you take a turn in your way, you think you’re lost, but that turn might take you to a beautiful place you couldn’t imagine... just like life itself.

I’m looking forward to watch “Brother bear” :)
I love disney!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Oh yeah, even if i expected more of the movie,i really like “Pirates of the Carribean-The curse of the Black Pearl” so great, well, and Johnny Depp looks so handsome in it :)

Ferdan—SO glad to see another fan of Brazil. You’ve got good taste on that one. It’s a film that needs repeated viewing. Everytime I watch it, I discover something more—a line, a reaction, another way it loops in on itself. Brilliant.

I completely agree with you that the US edit sucks. The European release shows what a masterwork that film really is. I dreamed of seeing that cut for fifteen years and when the three disc set was released, I nabbed it. Expensive but well worth it. The third disc is the studio’s “Happily Ever After” cut of the film, an hour shorter than Gilliam’s original. Most all the fantasy sequences were edited out and the film ends with Sam and Jill flying away into the clouds. Gilliam’s own US edit was not that horribly bad, but the original version just pulls it together so much better. A MUST for any fan of his work.

I disagree, however, that Brazil speaks to the US war on terrorism (although I suppose one could read that into it, ESPECIALLY considering today’s climate), but not when it was made at least. (The US fighting terrorism wasn’t even a concern at that time.) It’s 1984 meets The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It’s the oppressive crush of reality versus the salvation of escapist fantasy; accidents, mistakes, and coincidence, and the way taken opportunities can, in the long run, can dearly cost you. Is making the fantasy a reality better than just fantacising? The rest—politics, plastic surgery, beaurocracy, Christmas bombings, class—is just set dressing, a stage on which that battle brilliantly plays out. Great film.

Miracle Man:

I didn’t mean to say that Brazil talked specifically about the US war on terrorism, but there’s a point made in Brazil wich is really important in the current US situation...
“Have you ever seen a real terrorist?” Jill asks

As we can gather from that, Brazil’s state war on terrorists was either a plot from the bourocratic government... or simply stupidity from their part(some people believes that the “bombs” were actually malfunctioning air conditioners and pipes).
The only supposed ’terrorist’ we see on the film is Tuttle.... and it’s obvious that he was no terrorist at all, he was just a worker... “illegal” one, but a worker at last.
Then Lowry makes a terrorist out of himself and Jill when two cops get killed in the chase, you can see in Lowry’s face that he realises that.

And my parallel in the US is, how many Americans have seen real terrorists in the US?(apart from a single attack) to justify the Government’s growth of faculties (like patriot act, etc...)

Movies that have had a special impact on me:

- JURASSIC PARK
- THE RING
- AMERICAN BEAUTY
- HANNIBAL

and most recently

- ELEPHANT (it’s fantastic!)

Oh bloody hell, forgot:

- BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA

@MiracleMan: “The rest—politics, plastic surgery, beaurocracy, Christmas bombings, class—is just set dressing”

Mmmm... Whitney Houston we’ve got a problem...

The movie works on so many levels, there are so many sub-plots in the film: industrialization, terrorism, government control and bureaucracy (from both socialized and capitalist countries), technology gone wrong, plastic surgery as the idealization of youth, love (fear of love), and even modern filmmaking.

In fact, if we had to shrink it to one main topic, that would be the dehumanizing effect of technology and bureaucracy on today’s society – not fantasy vs. reality.

The fact that Lowry imagines this dream world and eventually becomes insane by the end of the film in order to escape from reality is just a consequence of that totalitarian government.

Now, about Ferdan’s connection with the US: I think that he is right, especially when the US government put out a simplistic script of ’good versus evil’ that was taken up by a pliant and intimidated media.

Terry Gilliam (as published in the whole page ad ’Not In Our Name’ in The New York Times): “What kind of world will this become if the US government has a blank cheque to drop commandos, assassins and bombs wherever it wants?”

And Bush saying “You’re either with us or against us” sounds like one of those stupid signs from the Ministry of Information from Brazil.

Does anybody like Jean Claude Van Damme? I saw last Sunday one of his latest movies “In hell”. Typical Van Damme movie, but anyway I liked it.

I really really liked Dogville. I thought it was a great film, original and very interesting. I actually think it has become my favourite film.
Some of my other favourites are Moulin Rouge, Chocolat, Fight Club, Lord of The Rings trilogy, Ocean’s Eleven, Lost souls in Atlantis (I think that’s what it’s called) and so on...

I was really looking forward to see Scary Movie 3. I agree it doesn’t seem that good because I have seen some scenes from the movie. Still, I’ll go, just to see how bad it is for myself

oh and I forgot Cats and Dogs and Finding Nemo :)

Finally have seen Lord Of The Rings 3.
Great movie.
Everybody should see these 3 movies (LOTR 1.2.3)

@ harriej

isn’t the love between the hobbits just adorable? ;)

btw, lennox’s “into the west” is just great!!

I was so upset the day I went to see LOTR 3, because people started to make fun of Frodo and Sam because of their relationship. Frodo and Sam friendship is one of the best love stories I’ve ever seen, it has nothing to do with being gay, is just another expression of love; but ignorant people always make stupid jokes when two males are as expressive as they are.

@Roxlander: You are right. I never looked at as (Sam and Frodo) being 2 gay’s.
They are just the best friends who will do everything for their friend.

I really identified with Sam, for me he’s the real hero in TLOTR. Frodo is amazing too, but he finally falls into temptation.

@animalkingdom: Annie Lennox will be performing “Into the west” LIVE at the Oscars! Woohoo!

talking about Oscar, I made my prediction recently. Check this out :

Best Movies : Mystic River
Best Actrees : Charlize Theron
Best Actor : Sean Penn
Best Supp. Actrees : Renee Zellwegger
Best Supp. Actor : “haven’t decide yet”
Best Director : Clint Eastwood
Best Animated Movie : Finding Nemo

I saw Lost In Translation two days ago. The reason I saw that because it got good review, many awards, etc..

but I’m a bit disapointed when I saw that, because it’s pretty boring to me...

I want to do my predictions too :-)

Best Movie : The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King
Best Actress : Charlize Theron
Best Actor : Sean Penn
Best Supp. Actress : Renee Zellwegger
Best Supp. Actor : Ken Watanabe
Best Director : Peter Jackson
Best Animated Movie : Finding Nemo

Finally... justice for Lord Of The Rings!!!

I don’t know about you but last night Oscar show was one of the best for me. It was so funny, Billy Cristal is a great host. This year all women looked beautiful, very fancy.

Of course, I would like some actor or actress from TLOTR to win also, but anyway, 11 Oscar is quite enough, don’t you think?

BTW, I failed only one of my predictions :-p Well, this year it was easier to guess.

I personally think LOTR got way too many Oscars. The film is good, but not so it deserves 11 Oscars. I heard that a lot of the hardcore LOTR fans also thought it was too much, hihi!

But the most pathetic Oscar it got I think was “best cutting”. This when they cut out Saruman and keeps Arwen!!!!! She has no importance at all in the book so why should she in the film?? Besides that I think she is a lousy actress.

hey guys!
i’ve just read the whole thread, and have some things to say....

animalkingdom and roxlander: i’m with you! LOTR (the whole trilogy) is just amazing, and i can’t get enough of it!!! have LOTR 1 and 2 on dvd (can’t wait for N 3), and see them from time to time. my husband and i are huge fans of the book too and think the 3 movies are just perfect!!! the casting for every character is just incredible, and the dedication to each of the films is WOW!! i mean, i can’t believe how they made it! peter jackson is just a genius!!
and yes, it happens all the time... there’s always those who don’t get it, and can only make fun of what they don’t understand... never mind. sam and “mr. frodo” are amazing!

per_mson: 11 oscars did nothing but justice!!! come on! those are 3 big books!! lot of work to do, don’t you think? on the other hand, i totally agree with you... too much arwen... that’s the only thing i don’t like about the trilogy. anyway, it doesn’t bother me that much...

judith: yeah! chocolat, pirates of the caribbean, and of course! finding nemo! i’m a pixar fan too!

but perhaphs the best movie i’ve seen this year (2004) is BIG FISH... really. it’s a must!!! and tim burton? another genius: nightmare before christmast, sleepy hollow, ed wood, mars attack, batman, edward scissorhands... i can’t get enough of him either!!! who’s with me?!

@sabrina59: I agree, the books are amazing. Maybe that’s why I’m not completely sold on the films?! ;-) Why invent so much when you have such a complex script? I understand they have to leave things out, but adding useless love scenes (especially when there already is a love scene in the book they hardly mention in the film(Eowyn+Faramir)) is in my opinion not good. That’s why I think “best cutting” was a bit wrong on this third film. The second Oscar they didn’t deserve in my opinion was the “best song”. I think Enya deserved that one much more in the first film. But she wasn’t even nominated if I remember correctly.

@per_mson: I’m sure the scenes with Saruman will be part of a extended version on DVD. Besides, the 11 Oscar are just enough because the three movies deserved the “Best Movie” Oscar, and the Academy make us all wait, wich wasn’t fair. BTW, I think Enya did win that Oscar in 2002.

@sabrina59: I didn’t like the first Tim Burton’s Batman, so weird for me, but the second one was great. I loved Catwoman! :-) Sleepy Hollow was a good movie too. You’re right, Tim Burton makes great movies, strange ones, but mostly good ones. I would like him to do another super heroes movie.

Talking about strange movies, yesterday I saw “21 Grams”. I’ve seen Iñarritu’s “Amores Perros”, and it was another strange movie, hard to understand. But they both are excelent. In 21G Sean Penn was great, and the whole story made me think a lot. “When we die we lose 21 grams, but what else we lose?... and what we gain?”

@Roxlander: My girlfriend, “the Oscar-freak”, just informed me that Enya was nominated, but that she never got the Oscar. That one went to (naturally) a Disney film, Monsters Inc.

I’m sure that Saruman will be in the extended version, but I still think it is a pity that the cinema audience never could enjoy him! ;-)

Ah, Ok, sorry, my mistake :-) And sorry for Enya, that’s a beautiful song :-(

hey, nice guess, Roxlander :)

congratulation to LOTR fans out there!

Madjy, you were close too :-)

I know you’re a Nemo’s fan, so congratulations to you too ;-)

I am more to Dory fan :)

Majdy, sorry I didn’t reply this week, I had a lot of work, I will next week, promise :-)

I want to see Monster and Big Fish too. And I’ve heard Gothika is a good movie, it seens to be interesting.

Today is “The Passion” premiere here in Costa Rica, can’t wait to see it!

hey!!! take your time :D I CAN wait :)

Have you people seen “The Passion of Christ”? What an impressive movie! I saw it last night and I had a lot of different feelings, I was scared, I was sad and crying, I was tired of that lot of blood, I felt tenderness, I was happy, and more.

I’ve always liked Jesus movies, and this is one of the best. The only complaint I have is that I wanted to see more, I would like the movie began when Jesus started his ministry.

I want to see Ladykillers!! anyone saw that?? I miss Tom hanks :)

Majdy, have you notice you and I are the only ones who replied last times? Maybe we should call this “The Majdy and Roxlander Thread” :-p

I noticed :) but who cares? I like movies, so let’s keep this thread alive...

talking about “passion”. I have promised Adam that I will only see that with him :)

I saw Along Came Polly last saturday, it sucks!!!

Really? It sucks? I thought it was funny, I saw the trailer and I liked it. Anyway I’m gonna rent it and then I’ll tell you.

so, what do u think about that movie? do u like it?

anyway, just got another sweet email from you :) thanks!

I went today to watch “brother bear” with my nephew (he’s a good excuse,i love disney-movies!!)
Wow,he’s 10000 times better as “the lion king” he’s beautiful,rich story,really wonderfull,after 10 minutes i was already crying :) :p :(

I haven’t seen “Brother Bear” yet, actually I haven’t seen last Disney’s movies :-(

I must get update one of these days, I’m about 4 years late :-p

@Majdy, I haven’t seen it yet, but as soon as I can I’ll see it. So many movies to see... so little time ;-)

Last night I saw “Cold Mountain”... beautiful movie, even more beautiful Nicole Kidman, and the most beautiful thing in the movie... Jude Law ;-) Wow!!!

haven’t seen Brother Bear too. I was broke when it comes on theatre, but I am sure my fav Nemo is still better :)

Cold Mountain is so beautiful. probably one of the best movie I saw this year...

I adore Renee :) she’s amazing.

Today I was watching this sci fi movie from 1999 called “The Thirteenth Floor”. I don’t think it was commercially very Popular, but it’s a very enjoyable flick :)
And I was pleasantly surprised to hear Cardigans “Erase Rewind” at the end when the credits were rolling :)

I wanted to see that movie, but in time I forgot it. “Erase and rewind”? Great song, I didn’t know it was a soundtrack. I’ll try to see it one of these days.

VAN HELSING!!! What a great movie!!!

I hope you have the chance to see it. If you like adventure, action, terror, and even comedy, this is the movie. Just spectacular!

Hugh Jackman is wonderful again as a hero, of course he always does ;-) And Kate Beckinsale surprised me with such an amazing beauty.

just seen harry Potter and the prizoner of azkaban :D can;t wait!!!
