Captain Kangaroo

Many may be too young to know who he was—and I’m not sure if it’s just an American thing—but a HUGE part of my childhood years, Captain Kangaroo, has died. I watched him every morning when I was a lad in my single digits. It’s like a member of the family died. Just saddening. Sooooo terribly saddening.

I think he was a big part of many a Canadian kid’s childhood too. Well, those kids who had cable. And a TV.

on one of the records, didn’t per thank “the captain and the kangaroo, it was a pleasure”?!
Denstandigaresan said on January 24, 2004 20:30:
Yep, she’s right... In the ’book’....
The first edition of the Swedish Pearls Of Passion, LP has the following message engraved on the run- off groove:
”T’WAS A PLEASURE – CAPTAIN AND KANGAROO”. The message has a hidden meaning
but Per Gessle wishes it to remain a secret.

Captain Kangaroo was a good kids program.
Now a-days, you’ve got all this Japanamation crap on the air. When I was growing up, sure, Anime was there, but not like this. We had some of the greatest shows:
Romper Room, Polka Dot Door, Sesame Street, Mr. Rodgers Neighbourhood. Laugh all you want, but Mr. Rodgers was DA BOMB. I’d watch him over most of the “new stuff” like Pokemon, Teletubbies, Barney...

Yes very sad that Captain Kangaroo passed away, I used to watch his show too when I was little.
And Spooks, cool mention of our beloved kids shows back in the 70s, but you’re also forgetting Electric Company, Zoom, The Magic Garden, all the Sid + Marty Krofft stuff like HR PufNStuf, Land Of The Lost, Sigmund + The Sea Monsters, The Bugaloos, The Lost Saucer, and much more, that stuff ruled, and is STILL more refreshing than the stuff on nowadays...
I also agree, Mr Roger’s Neighborhood was AWESOME, such a pure soul and a comforting presence, so sad he died too...he truly was our favourite neighbor, with his trademark cardigan sweater and sneakers...and his regular cast of puppets too...
Don’t remmeber Polka Dot Door though....???

Larry: Didn’t say I remembered ALL of em. Just ones that were ones I watched with frequency. Polka Dot Door is kinda hard to explain. There was a man and woman as hosts to the show and a polka-dotted kangaroo, called Polkaroo. The guy would leave for something, and then Polkaroo would appear and help act out the day’s lesson. Kinda like when Mr. Snufflelupagus (check the spelling on THAT) was Big Bird’s imaginary friend, then about 10 years ago, EVERYONE could see him....

For me, it was great Canadian kids shows like Mr. Dressup, The Friendly Giant, and Canada’s version of Sesame Street, where we learned to count to 20 in French instead of Spanish, and we had a dorky bear named Basil. On the American side, it was Square One TV and 3-2-1 Contact. That was a great time for children’s programming.
LittleSpooky said on January 27, 2004 04:10:
How the hell could one forget 3-2-1 Contact? Easy *lol*

Growing up back in the Dark Ages, we only got two channels to choose from. And that was back in the days when kindergarten was only half a day. My tein and I went in the afternoon, so we got to see the Cap’n every a.m. No PBS whatsoever. I didn’t even see Sesame Street until I was in my teens. I did see The Electric Company, though. . .
Does anyone remember a show called Big Blue Marble?

@spooky: Hey, them’s fightin’ words! The Bloodhound Gang was lthe most stylin’ teenage crimebusters around... sniff. I miss Afro-puffs. Especially on white men.
