Boca Juniors won their third Intercontinental Cup on Sunday, defeating AC Milan 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout after the teams played to a 1-1 tie.
Alfredo Cascini made the deciding goal in the shootout for the Argentine club. With the score 1-1 in the tiebreaker, AC Milan’s Clarence Seedorf shot over the net and Matias Donnet and Cascini then scored to put Boca ahead by two penalty kicks.
“I thought we played with the right spirit from start to finish but also think it is unfortunate for a match as big as this to be settled on penalties,” Boca coach Carlos Bianchi said.
The Intercontinental Cup, also known as the Toyota Cup, matches the top club teams from South America and Europe. Boca also won the title in 1977 and 2000.
Before a crowd of 67,000 at International Stadium Yokohama, the teams traded first-half goals but failed to score in the second half of regulation and two overtimes.
In the waning minutes of the second overtime, Filippo Inzaghi’s header off Andrea Pirlo’s curling free kick went in but the referee ruled offsides. Substitute Carlos Tevez had a chance to settle the game in injury time but his shot went just over the crossbar.
In the first half, Jon Tomasson scored for the Italian team in the 23rd minute off an excellent pass from Pirlo, rifling the ball between the legs of Boca goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri.
Boca tied the game seven minutes later. Iarley deflected a cross from Guillermo Barros Schelotto that AC Milan goalie Dida got a hand on. The ball went to Donnet, who sent a shot into the net past a lone defender.

Well... Boca Juniors got its colours after the Swedish flag.
Marie is a football fan.
And when Roxette came to Argentina during the Joyride Tour, Marie went to see a Boca vs. River football match.
Anyway... yes, it’s kind of off-topic. But most argentinians are _so_ extremist as regards football ;)
