I got the following message back from EMI Canada’s quality control department in response to my complaint (which I’ve reproduced below). I hope they mean what they say!
Hello Chris,
We are in receipt of your email and regret that you have experienced a problem with one of our products.
At this time, we would like to inform you that we are looking into the defective Roxette stock and are hoping to replace your copy. We appreciate your patience and thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
Regards,
EMI Music Canada

Although I was very pleased to see that EMI Canada released a DVD compilation of Roxette’s videos (“The Ballad and Pop Hits”), I was disappointed in the quality of the bonus documentary, “Really Roxette.” The sound in the documentary is about one second out of synch with the picture. All people I know who have the Canadian version of the DVD are experiencing this problem, which I take to mean that the entire run is faulty. I understand that this is a problem that arose from converting the video from
PAL to NTSC, and I hope that EMI will correct this problem in subsequent pressings of the DVD. I expect that some measure will be taken to allow customers who purchased the faulty DVD to receive a corrected pressing in its place and I would appreciate it if you would keep me abreast of any
developments to this end.

Hehe. You think they’d take all the bad ones and replace them with new ones? Are they all not defected though? So they’d have to rerelease eh?
ally77 said on December 17, 2003 19:56:
Well done.. someone or somepeople finally decided to do somthing positive in regards to the DVD... I hope you guys get new copies... ;)
roxtexanet said on December 17, 2003 20:18:
@Damineh: Yes, this is correct... they’re all bad. My guess is that they’ll recall the bad ones and ship replacements, and then allow those of us who purchased the bad DVD to exchange it for a good one at Future Shop or wherever. Who knows? I hope they really do something about it, it’s not a trivial defect.
By the way, A&B Sound seems to be the best place to get the DVD... the one in downtown Vancouver had *three* copies, and they were only $24.99 each!

In order for EMI Canada to consider invoking an expensive product recall, they are going to want to see a lot of complaints first.
My advice would be for those concerned to write or email EMI Canada en masse.
coyboyusa said on December 17, 2003 23:25:
welcome to the company form letter we’ll get back to you the next time we release a roxette dvd in the year 2025
RobS said on December 18, 2003 08:13:
if it is the complete run that was affected, and they have to/ will replace all that stock, thats gonna cost them a hell of alot of money.
If only they didn’t skimp on quality control they wouldn’t be in this situation.

judith - what is pathetic and sad? The fault, or the complaints?
DaminehGessle said on December 20, 2003 11:11:
RobS : If each stores has 3 of them, then they’d only have released 100 in Canada I assume?? Hahahah! I couldn’t find any copies here in Victoria. I know my mom has bought me the DVD in Vancouver. So I also assume that only very very big cities carry the DVD in their stores. I mean I couldn’t find it in Victoria. Go figure.
coyboy: well said heehee.
coyboyusa said on December 20, 2003 12:12:
i ordered mine from cdnow/amazon usa it was supposed to come out here the 16th and they dont have it yet i wonder whats up?
silver-blue said on December 22, 2003 00:20:
I ordered mine from Amazon USA and got it two days ago. It too has the sound problem so I emailed emi canada as well. I’ll let you know what happens.
DaminehGessle said on December 23, 2003 19:21:
Could you believe the fact that I went to 2 HMV locations here in Vancouver and 1 in Victoria and they DO NOT carry Roxette’s new DVD??
StillFar said on December 23, 2003 20:24:
@Damineh: same here in Montreal, so I ordered it two weeks ago...still no repsonse :(

Seeing that these are common defects, I will be altering the DVD’s listing on my site to the following :
“It appears that most of the Canadian printing of this DVD has defects. If you intended to purchase this DVD, please click here to send the following message to EMI Canada’s Quality Control : “I have just been informed that Roxette’s Ballad and Pop Hits DVD may be defective. Please inform me when corrected copies are made available so that I may purchase it. Thank you.”
I’ll be changing it on my next update, on new years eve. Here’s the HTML source for Canadians that wants to add it to their site :
It appears that most of the Canadian printing of this DVD has defects. If you intended to purchase this DVD, please click here to send the following message to EMI Canada’s Quality Control : “I have just been informed that Roxette’s Ballad and Pop Hits DVD may be defective. I´m glad to see how loyal fans Rox has around the world...
can you get Abba dvd in Canada btw? -> off-topic.
robmc said on December 24, 2003 03:11:
Hi Stormkeeper. Yes, there are several Abba DVDs that are available in Canada :
“The Definitive Collection” - all videos minus “I Have A Dream”
“Abba Gold” - all of the videos for the tracks featured on that compilation + a documentary and a 1992 version of “Dancing Queen”
“The Winner Takes It All” - A documentary on Abba that aired on television + extra footage
Anarem said on December 24, 2003 04:05:
And in the A & B Sound in downtown Winnipeg you can find an A-ha DVD. How messed up is that? EMI doesn’t support its artists at all...
robmc said on December 24, 2003 18:40:
Hi Anarem.
Unfortunately the A-ha DVD isn’t their “Headlines & Deadlines” video compilation.
DaminehGessle said on December 25, 2003 08:58:
StillFar: This is rediculous. I thought EMI Canada was the first to announce that this DVD was being released! THere we go: 3 major cities do not carry this DVD. How stupid really!! I totally do not get it. I mean they seem to have DVDs from almost any crappy bound out there but this one? It’s very very stupid.
robmc: Do you represent EMI or what? If you do, please answer why there are no Roxette DVDs in major stores in major cities here in Canada!!!!
coyboyusa said on December 25, 2003 11:55:
why spend mone on prooting a banmd that has no market in a specific country..i wouldn’t encourage emi to spend 10k on promotion in usa if all its gonna sell there here is maybe 100dvds when if they spents the same in germany it would sell them a couple thousand more dvd’s the music industry has changed and alot of you people need to come to terms with that
Anarem said on December 25, 2003 14:25:
@coy: we’re talking about Canada here, sweetie, not the States. Up here there’s *still* a market for Roxette (unlike in your neck of the woods), it’s just that they’re not marketed well.
robmc said on December 25, 2003 19:28:
Hi DaminehGessle - Nope. Not an EMI rep but a consumer.
I haven’t had the chance to check my local stores but if the DVD isn’t in the major chains like HMV or Future Shop then it was likely recalled because of the defects. The DVD hasn’t popped up on any of my local flyers so perhaps some of the chains didn’t even get theirs yet. It’s still listed on several retailer web sites and EMI’s shopping site though.
DaminehGessle said on December 26, 2003 06:47:
How weird!! I don’t think many people would go to HMV website and search artist by artist if they dunno who they are looking for, but they’d sure do in stores!!!
coyboy: I watched World Idol tonight and got to believe Americans are very selfish and self-centred and think they are the only ones. This is a thread on the release of the Canadian DVD so please do not compare Canada to the US cause they ain’t the same. I do not want to make this a war thread but am sick and tired of you people.
Anarem said on December 26, 2003 07:26:
Okay, before this turns nasty I want to say that Damineh does not represent all Canadians when she makes comments like that. I was just talking about the DVD, how poorly EMI markets their artists, and how there’s still a market here for Roxette, just not in the States.
@Damineh:
What, you watched World Idol last night and decided to use it as an excuse to do some American bashing? I don’t see your logic. All I saw were people cheering their Idols on, and everybody was well represented. Sure, you can express your opinion, but you don’t have to come off like a twit.
robmc said on December 26, 2003 20:31:
I happened to find the DVD at a local independent store here in Ottawa. Haven’t seen it at the local Future Shop but their copies could have been sold - Boxing Day sales.
Isn’t it odd that they didn’t use the master that was provided for “Roxette - The Videos”, which included the documentary ?
DaminehGessle said on December 27, 2003 05:52:
Yeah sorry anarem I myself have american friends so yeah I apologize.
Don’t think that simon came off too harsh though?
coyboyusa said on December 31, 2003 16:39:
anarem lol when is the last time canada had a successfully promoted roxette single and i don’t mean the 1 time they showed stars on much music...lets be realistic, in parts of europe and a huge part of latin america they rule, but their time in NA/canada is well over
Anarem said on January 1, 2004 03:17:
@coyboy: I’m looking at the last few CDs Roxette released – HAND, Room Service, Ballad Hits, Pop Hits... and oh, whaddya know, they were manufactured up here in Canada by EMI *Canada*. Were they ever released domestically in the United States? Nope, I don’t think so. If I’m wrong, feel free to correct me. Now look at the Roxette DVD in your hands. Where did you get it from? EMI *Canada*. There is still a market up here, otherwise EMI Canada wouldn’t have wasted their time and what little budget they have releasing anything from Roxette.
DaminehGessle said on January 1, 2004 20:49:
Ok guys I got my answer to why HMV does not carry the new DVD. After the frustration caused by not being able to find the DVD anywhere in Victoria and Vancouver, I finally asked the guy at the counter at HMV West Vancouver location. He first told me that they do not carry Roxette anymore since they are out-of-date and that there is no way they’d bring in the DVD. Then he checked his computer and after scrolling up and down, he finally found something and I was like yeah there it is. He said well this is a very expensive DVD for an old band. First we only carry popular music that’s wanted by people and second, we need sales. So we would not carry this item. You can order it through us which would take 4 to 6 weeks. Hahaha. I said no thanks and got the hell out of there. Weird feeling!
robmc said on January 2, 2004 20:00:
DaminehGessle - That’s odd. My local HMVs have stocked more obscure titles, including a recent DVD from a french pop band from the 90’s that I like, named “Niagara”. They stocked the new Tears For Fears DVD so why wouldn’t they stock Roxette’s ?
Anarem said on January 3, 2004 00:36:
One of the HMVs in North Winnipeg carries the Roxette DVD... at full price, of course. Of course they only have two copies. Ugh.
RoxFanUSA said on January 3, 2004 03:07:
I was so happy when I found this DVD at a Virgin store in the US. Than I watched the extra specials and I’m like ok this is weird. Luckily the videos look OK. But it makes watching the specials hard.
I wonder what will happen if EMI recalls the DVDs when you bought it in the US.
Roxette are so much better than most of the “music” on today’s radio (as are ABBA.)
DaminehGessle said on January 3, 2004 07:18:
Rob: I was shocked when the guy told me all I said above. It was sort of insulting to hear they do not carry old bands. I indeed asked him in return why they’d carry The Rolling Stones, Queen and The Doors?! She did not answer.
Anarem: I find it odd not to be able to find Roxette on any HMV. I checked Music World today and they didn’t have it either. I shall check Virgin next time I go downtown. I’m sure they wouldn’t carry it in Victoria but not being able to find it in Vancouver is kinda weird!
RoxFan: We always hear things are not released in the US. When I was down there, I found so many QUeen albums that were only released in the US and were considered rare. They were very expensive though but still. YOu got some very good music stores down there. I have forgotten the name but there is this HUGE one in California again I do not recall the name. It was the most awesome music store I have ever been to.
robmc said on January 4, 2004 19:09:
DaminehGessle : You’d think a band that had three #1 singles and five top five singles (not including the #1s) in Canada would be able to get a DVD on their shelves.
BTW, I think HMV is still boycotting Rolling Stones material - Exclusivity dispute.
roxtexanet said on January 4, 2004 21:31:
@Damineh: A&B Sound on Seymour, downtown Vancouver, had three copies of the new DVD last time I was there (3 weeks ago), at $24.99 each.
Anarem said on December 17, 2003 11:54:
Oy, I got the exact reply. But let’s hope they really do something about it...
