Quality of new DVD?
RobS said on November 19, 2003 07:26:
Question for the lucky people who have got the new DVD. How is the quality like compared to the AVEM DVD? The menu screens (from the links in http://www2.dailyroxette.com/smalltalk/thread.php/9310?p=2) seem to look quite nice, definitely better than AVEM. But what about the quality of the video esp. of the older clips, The look -> HDYD?
If the everyone says its great i might just end up getting a copy, if it is ever released in OZ :(

I’ve just received my copy, will check them during the weekend.

And much to my shock and pleasure it came. I can’t compare it to the other, but the quality was very good. There were moments of a little distortion, but I think they were deliberate, especially the Anton Corbijn video for Salvation.
However the sound on the Really Roxette doc is off by a few seconds. The lips move, then the sound comes. Is that a mistake, or has it always been like that. It’s reeeeeeeeally annoying.
roxtexanet said on November 29, 2003 01:01:
@MiracleMan: No, it hasn’t always been that way (the documentary recorded from Swedish TV wasn’t like that, anyway), it’s a manufacturing error... mine does the same thing, we should write to EMI Canada and complain!!
I wish I could compare the quality of the new DVD to the old one for those who keep asking, but I’ve only got the new one... one would have to have both to compare them fairly.

Okies, I just received my copy of the new DVD, and ugh, what a crappy job, especially with the Really Roxette documentary, being out of sync and all. Ugh!!!!! I wonder if it’s just EMI Canada or if it’s like that all over the world...
Here are my likes and dislikes about the new DVD:
- I do like the new menus. Better looking. But why oh why couldn’t they have just done the singles in chronological order?
- I don’t like the fact that the soundtrack songs (Almost Unreal and IMHBL) have clips from the movies. Couldn’t they have included both versions?
- The sound quality is not better than the original DVD. And it goes from loud to soft to loud again– in the same song. As an example, the IMHBL video. It’s so disconcerting!
- The Joyride documentary looks grainy, like it was a VCD. Ugh!
- The Wish I Could Fly video is the censored version, just like in the original DVD. Alas, no female nipple.
- The documentaries on the original DVD had chapter breaks– the new DVD doesn’t.
- The quality of the older videos is still crappy, just like in the original DVD.
So, to sum up, it’s a poorly made DVD. To my fellow North American Roxette fans, if you guys have the original DVD, keep it, and shell out the extra money for a $50 Apex DVD player that can play PAL DVDs. If you still have the original Roxette videotapes, like Look Sharp Live, keep them, because the quality is way better than the DVD. If you have some of their videos from the enhanced CDs, keep them, because you’ll get the uncensored versions (WICF for example). I hate to say it, but never have I been so disappointed in a product!

i’m in agreement with Anarem on many points about this new dvd, the sound, the really roxette documentary and stuff being out of order.
i do have the pal one, but only watch it on the pc at present, so i guess that’s where i’ll continue to watch really roxette, till i get a dvd player that can handle it, i want one that does multi-region too.
it is a good thing to be able to see the vids on my tv though.
i do think emi should give a rebate or make a replacement though, because of the really roxette mess up.

Anarem, thanks for the information. I will officially not be buying this updated DVD after reading what a crap job they did with it. Go figure. Instead of updating and remastering it, they put out the same old grainy product. The least they could have done is put out 2 DVDs - with one DVD including the Ballad Hits videos and one with the Pop Hits videos. That way there would have been room for remastered videos and sound quality.
Perhaps they will re-issue it again next year with the bonus videos this time being the “non-movie” versions of IMHBL and AU. ;)
Congratulations Capitol for a job poorly done again!
Note to Capitol: All it takes is just ONE Roxette fan to aid in putting together a DVD with correct photos to match the videos. ;) And anyone with eyes and ears can see see/hear when a video is out of sync. And I’m sure such a Roxette fan would be willing to do this for free. I would.
MiracleMan said on December 2, 2003 18:49:
Like a pervert, I went in search of a nipple in WICF—and there it is, several times. . .
The other thing I noticed was that the IMHBL and Neverending photos on the insert look to be from another video and not the one included.
NeverendingRoxette said on December 2, 2003 19:02:
they took the pix of the old swedish chart show videos - that’s why they’re different - stupid.
RobS said on December 3, 2003 07:14:
well it looks like i’m not even gonna bother worrying about this being released in OZ, it seems it just isn’t worth it. I’ll just stick to AVEM...
thanks for the info.
Starrox said on December 3, 2003 17:05:
Just wondering: did anyone with the PAL-version of the DVD notice Really Roxette being out of sync? If not, somenone probably did a crappy job when converting it from PAL to NTSC...
thecla said on December 4, 2003 02:40:
i have just been to the emi canada website to fill out a complaint form about the new dvd. it probably won’t do any good, but anyone else who is unhappy with the quality should also complain, at least they won’t think we all just passively accept this.
next stop, to amazon.ca to write a negative review.
LittleGirl78 said on December 5, 2003 21:50:
I´ve the PAL version and mine is perfect. Also the sync on Really Roxette is perfect I hear the sound on the same time like the lips say it. ;-)
And with the meny I agree, the new one is better.
roxtexanet said on December 6, 2003 01:21:
@thecla: Writing a complaint to EMI is an excellent idea. You can even choose “Damaged goods/Quality assurance/Manufacturing” from the drop-down menu on their comments page. Here’s the URL for those of you who want to complain:
http://www.capitolmusic.ca/contact.asp
I would advise people to complain about the synchronisation problem in “Really Roxette” only. Things like not being happy with the content on the DVD or the booklet or whatever are design issues, and really have nothing to do with EMI Canada. If enough of us complain about the synchronisation problem, they might reissue the CD and let us trade our crappy version for one that works properly.
thecla said on December 6, 2003 03:06:
@roxtexanet - that is just where i complained.
at amazon.ca i left a review that only mentioned the sound and synch issues so folks could be warned before buying, because to tell the truth, i would buy it anyway even knowing these things, but it sure would have been nice to know what i was getting.

DVD REVIEW
Hey every1, finally Somlivre.com delivered my DVD (here in Brazil / NTSC version).
I’ll put my considerations here...on topics. Hope we can discuss them and compare to other countries versions and the ATVEM release...
OUTSIDE-LOOK: Nice! At least they fixed the “pop-hits-missing” problem. The inlay with pics looks almost the same as the ATVEM. But u knew that already :)
THE MENUS: The presentation of the logos & menus is ok, but I just can’t understand all that screaming-and-beat noise that they used as a background music... what is that? some remix of a rox-track with screaming??
THE VIDEOS: Alright...now I’ll split this topic a little...
*Best picture quality: MILK AND TOAST AND HONEY
*Worse picture quality: ALL THE VIDEOS FROM PEARLS OF PASSION and LOOK SHARP! Oh my God..just take a look at “listen to your heart”.
Looks like an old VHS tape from 1988!!!
*Worse source-tape quality:
Ok, now this thing makes me reallyyyy mad: in some videos, like SPENDING MY TIME and FIREWORKS you can see some “old-tape-artifacts” (like when u watch a tape over and over...).
Man, this is ANNOYING!!! I mean, what a shame!! They probably used the same source-tapes from the ATVEM, cause I found out these mistakes on that release too! (and was hoping they got better sources...)
My VHS tapes still look very nice...and now I have a DVD actually WORSE than my tapes on some videos...
*The tragedy:
Alright, maybe I could excuse them for the quality of some videos, after all, there are more than 30...
but I will NEVER EVER excuse them for the
AUDIO SYNCH problem IN REALLY ROXETTE!!
C’MON!!!!!!!!! what is that?? I have over 40 DVDs and had never seen something like that! God, it’s totally out of synch, BEGINNING TO END!!!
Sorry folks, this is NOT a professional work! It looks amateur and I don’t think it’s fair to sell something defective.
Let´s do something!! They got my money u know...I payed for a QUALITY DVD and I want to have it. Let’s write, complain, ask for a correction...
*FINAL VEREDICT:
Keep your tapes. If u got ATVEM, KEEP IT!!!! It’s a bad release but its better than this one anyway!!
God, when will them release something under the MINIMAL quality-standard??
Sorry folks...I’m really disappointed here... I would
keep my mouth shut if there were 1 or 2 mistakes...but it has A LOT of them...
Just to let u know. I don’t hold the truth, so I’d like to hear what u all has to say about that and what could we do to make EMI repair the thing for us...
best wishes!
Zargo said on December 7, 2003 04:04:
Well, clearly EMI has seen roxette fans as nothing but a joke for years now...
Idiot fans that’l pay for any old shit they dish up.
There was certainly nothing wrong with purchasing the ’all the videos and more’ dvd but to buy this one after you’ve heard how awful it is is just proving EMI’s point.
RobS said on December 7, 2003 10:32:
it seems there just isn’t anything good to say about this release :(
@Roxbang2003 - what exactly do the artefacts look like on SMT and Fireworks, coz i had the some troubles on ATVEM?!
Roxbang2003 said on December 7, 2003 14:29:
Well, as far as I remember (didn’t watch it again cause I’m so mad about it...):
In SMT u can clearly see the artifact (like on old tapes) just on the beginning, when the marie on the window fades...then u see a “line” that disappears really fast. but u can still see it.
(this im sure happened in AVEM...in Fading there was a similar thing)
In FIREWORS AND FADING LIKE A FLOWER pay special attention, cause on the first, when they are near to the part “they made a lot of money playing folk guitar” (they show mcdonalds, etc)
the screen BLINKS in black!! oh its so annoying.
In FADING LIKE A FLOWER the same things happens, I think its a little before the rose breaks.
Don’t worry folks, I’ll try to watch it really carefully to report ALL the mistakes...but even if there were JUST these i’m typing about....it would ALREADY be
a shame....
man, and thats because we’re fans...
but imagine a guy that knows 5 or 6 songs.... he is excited to watch the videos...come home and see the tragedy EMI made on the DVD..
he’ll laugh and say:
“oh well, I knew they were not famous anymore, but they must be really out of money too. what a crappy job...”
it’s a shame people. as someone reported here,
I have to agree: I have NEVER been so disappointed with a product! and I’m speaking as a regular consumer, not as a fan...
the worst part? EMI just doesn’t care, and will keep the release the way it it. And us? Well, maybe on the next “DVD update” we are going to have some more complains to share.
I leave a question: doesn’t Roxette management (or something like it) CHECK the quality of the thing before it goes to the stores?? I know EMI doesn’t, but at least Roxette people should, cause now (more than ever) their image is becoming a joke with this kind of release... :(
take care...

Apparently, nobody really knows. LOL. There’s very little news or updates about the quality. In a few posts, some people are saying that the audio is a bit better. As for the picture? No idea. Perhaps it’s just nothing that striking to brag about. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll buy the new version until I see a more complete review.
