Hope you find this interesting:
46664 is a global initiative that has brought together the leading music icons of our time to spread the message “Give 1 Minute of Your Life To Stop AIDS”.
46664 was the prison number of Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, Cape Town where he was held in captivity for 18 years.
Nelson Mandela gave his prison number 46664 to Dave Stewart of Eurythmics in November of last year who then asked the late Joe Strummer to write lyrics for a song that included the 46664 prison number. Stewart then completed the song with Bono earlier this year and the two of them recorded it as the first of a series of co-writes together for this campaign.
Among the artists performing at the 46664 concert are: Eurythmics, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Gabriel, Anastacia, Baaba Maal, Beyonce, U2, The Corrs, Angelique Kidjo, Moloko, Paul Oakenfold featuring Shifty Shell Shock and TC, Queen, Youssou N’Dour, and Zucchero.

well I guess those wannabees aren’t interested in such projects?
DaminehGessle said on November 18, 2003 06:44:
I haven’t even read your thread yet but 46664 is an awesome project which started by Brian May and Roger Taylor. I sent my greetings to them and donations ofcourse. It’s for a good cause and knowing Freddie lost it to AIDS, I am there all the way.
DaminehGessle said on November 18, 2003 06:46:
coyboy: The reason why they are not there hmmm I got no clue. But Brian and Roger united with Mandela and later Bono and the rest of the gang joined. Markuz I wonder why you’d name Queen last in your list!!

The concert was just awesome!!
Eurythmics performed 3 songs:
-Here Comes the Rain Again
-7 Seconds (with Yossou N’Dour)
-Sweet Dreams
You can listen to “7 Seconds” with Annie and Yossou here:

I was wondering if Eurythimics were there when I heard it on the news—was it Friday? They just mentioned Bono and played a clip from him.
And where did 7 Seconds come from? Isn’t that a Neeneh Cherry song?
DaminehGessle said on November 30, 2003 20:21:
I watched it live yesterday on the web. It was an awesome 4 hour show (3hours + intro). Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart sang a few songs plus sweet dreams. The only part I didn’t like was when Brian May played with one of The Corrs girls singing Is This The World We Created. I just cannot imagine someone else singing as Freddie, especially when they don’t do a good job :(.
Anyways, it was great show. Cannot wait to buy the DVD.

According to searching at WinMX, “7 Seconds” is by both Youssou N’dour and Neneh Cherry. When I watched the concert today on MTV, I recognized it once it got to the chorus. I remember the song from years ago - hearing it on the radio here in the USA. Must have been a minor hit here? What year is the original from?

I saw that concert too! they broadcast that on MTV! 7 Seconds was amazing!!

This reminds me of how pissed of I am at North Americans for how big of a deal they made out of Beyonce in 46664. Dude, Dave Steward started the whole things and things happened when Brian May, Roger Taylor and Dave Steward got together with Nelson Mandela, then Bono and then the rest. I don’t get why all they talk about is Bono and Beyonce. That’s just so disrespectful of the other artists who performed even more than these two. How about The Corrs for example? It’s funny how they never even mentioned Brian and Roger in Oprah yesterday. I call it pure stuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Me mad.
Markuz said on December 2, 2003 19:58:
@DaminehGessle: I’m glad you pointed that out. I was really pissed off too (especially bein a huge Stewart/Eurythmics fan) but I didn’t post it here because that would be an anti-american thread according to TDR standars...
Yup, Stewart was the brain behind the 46664 project. I think his frienship with Mr. Mandela started when he and Annie performed at the Free Nelson Mandela concert in the 80’s. Pity he didn’t get proper credit.
What really amazes me is how both Dave and Annie care for such causes. In fact, all proceeds from the peace album AND the peacetour went to Greenpeace and Amnesty International in 2000. I respect them for that.

@MARKUZ—Don’t worry, if there’s anything anti-American that offends me, I’d let you know. ;D
The media seem to just want to report the “it” performers of the moment. Truly a shame.
Huge Eurythmics fan myself—but it doesn’t surprise me at all that they didn’t get the recognition, esp Dave, since most people have written them off long ago as a “What ever happened to?” Peace didn’t do anything here—I never heard a single release on te radio. Annie Lennox fared better with Bare, but as there were no official releases, the mainstream radio seems to have ignored her, as far as I can see. I’ve heard Pavement Cracks once on an alternative station. We’ll see if she gets a metric buttload of Grammy nominations, then there may be more radio love.
And as far as the concert, Stewart wasn’t mentioned in an entertainment show report on it, but Lennox was named as one of the performers. But in a radio spot, Eurythmics was mentioned with Bono & N’Dour, while everyone else got no mention at all. Go figure.
coyboyusa said on December 3, 2003 01:13:
for all the content and message that the concert/benefit was about she didn’t belong there just like her hyper sexual performance at the washington memorial
MiracleMan said on December 3, 2003 01:32:
Oh Beyoncé—for a second I thought you meant Annie Lennox. lol
DaminehGessle said on December 3, 2003 07:44:
Wow cool yey I thought I’d be flamed by my thoughts heehee.
I very much repect Dave Stewart for the whole thing no matter how little they mentioned him. The cool thing is that those behind this event (Dave, Brian and Roger) do not care whether they’re mentioned. Check brianmay.com out. I love this guy. THis event made me miss Freddie sooooooooo much. Brian I bet was about to cry when he was performing Is This The World We Created with Andrea Corr.
Actually he said that the person who knows about this the most is Bob Geldof. I thought I should mention that :).
But yeah sadly, those in charge didn’t get credit for it here. I totally expected Oprah to mention at least the 3 I named above. Nope... not even her. Just Bono and Beyonce. Beyonce sure found her way through. Her songs didn’t even suit the event.

I watched part of the concert this a.m. on the MTV while I was getting ready for work. Not sure, but I think it was edited here. I saw Brian May singing, then Eurythimics performed Sweet Dreams then 7 Seconds, then they moved on to Ms Dynamite, or however she’s spelled. The Coors performed, and Then Queen with Anastacia was not to long after that, but I had to go to work so that was it. I was surprised that I saw Oprah there at first.
It’s the first I’d seen of it on MTV US, and at 7:30 a.m. here in the midwest. If that’s true, they haven’t done the event its proper service.
DaminehGessle said on December 6, 2003 02:24:
MTV Canada showed it the Monday the concert was supposed to be broadcast. Actually, 5 channels showed it simultaneously. Could you have missed watching it on MTV on Monday?
MiracleMan said on December 6, 2003 07:30:
Perhaps. I’m not the watcher of the MTV I was when I was a whippersnapper. But at that time Mozart was in the Top 40.
DaminehGessle said on December 6, 2003 09:26:
lol
I used to love MTV back when I was in Iran. I found MTV Europe amusing. Also Channel [V] which was broadcast from somewhere in Asia was awesome, too much Roxette and European music. I liked it. I don’t like either of MTV Canada or the US.
