...the TV advertisment for some paint company using a roxette song to promote it?
They’ve got The Look playing with the lyrics cleverly changed to ’We’ve got the look.’
As if messing with all those beach boys classics was’t bad enough...

Hi Brad, I’m in Ballarat, Victoria.
How do these companies get the rights to use songs like that?
In Roxette’s case, just by asking Emi?
No less than three butchered beach boys songs in advertisments at the moment:
- Wouldn’t it be nice (cadbury)
- Good Vibrations (good guys)
- Barbara Ann (carpet choice)

Hi Brad, I’m sure the Kresta one is still kicking around somewhere, flogging their Kath and Kimesque style blinds and drapes. Erghhhh. At least they could have hired a decent singer for it.
And as for the Cadbury ads, couldn’t they at least have written a jingle that friggin’ rhymes! I hate those ads!
Hey Zargo, I’m pretty close to you! (on the Western Freeway, at least :)

No, but we have something similar in this region - a gift shop mutilating “The Look” in a similar fashion...
As I understand it, it is borderline legal as long as
a) you don’t use much of the song
b) you use neither the original music nor voices (there is a large chunk of the advertising industry devoted to re-producing songs like this)
in which case you don’t appear to need permission, although I suspect that you would be in trouble if anyone ever got serious about it.
