The "Anyone" video
TobyNZ said on July 9, 2003 10:32:
Hi all,
I recently read in the notes on The Ballad Hits that this video was banned by MTV due to a controversial scene of Marie nearly drowning.
I was able to see the first minute or so at Aftonbladet, and to me, that first minute did seem very emotional - especially with the ambulance and all that. It made me even cry a little!
So, I want to know, if you have seen this video, and if so:
* Do you like it? Do you think it is much better than many other Roxette videos? Why?
* What do you think about the video being banned due to the “controversial” scene?
* And (as I am a newcomer here) is it highly regarded by Roxette fans as a whole as being a very emotional video? What (if anything) have you observed as a whole in the way Roxette fans react to this video?
Forgive me if this sounds ignorant - I am a newcomer here.
Cheers,
Toby, 20, NZ

Welcome to a mostly friendly forum!
I like the video a lot. MTV banned it because of the “suicide/suicide attempt”, which I personally think is ridiculous. But MTV seems to search out anything in Roxette’s videos lately, so they can either ban or censor them. The song itself is also, like Per says, very underrated.

Actually, “Anyone”, both song and video, is one of my least Roxette favourites. I cant understand how they wanted it to be the first single from “Have A Nice Day”. I think That “You Dont Understand me” is the best video from Roxette. Have you seen it?
Btw, welcome to TDR!

I loved the song when i first heared it . Song full of real emotions and feelings.
The video is a gem , marie is just so brilliant acting in it .

I like it. :) I live by the sea... hasn’t made me want to walk in there yet and try to kill myself!(Wouldn’t be the drowning that killed you here.. would be all the muck floating on the surface! LOL!) I’d understand if it was Robbie Williams or somebody like that, which are known to have young impressionable fans. Oy, oy, oy.
So what about Stars video then? Marie jumps off the wall into the water... fully clothed etc, which kids are taught never to do, as clothes when wet can act like an anchor and pull you under the water!?
Ok... I will now stop blabbing!

Welcome Toby!!
Anyone is one of my favourites videos.
For me it belongs up there with Salvation, You Don´t Understand Me, Vulnerable and Wish I Could Fly.
Rox_Nox2003 said on July 9, 2003 18:32:
MTV was a bit silly to reject the video cause let’s face it kids don’t watch MTV to the point of beng affected by a woman trying to drown on the sea...please...dahhh??? we don’t even get such dramatic scene on the video....it’s all so fictional....and MTV shows more stupid videos that schock a lot of more people BUT since these video belong to newcomers and people who are hiting big in the music...it’s all about the money, let’s face it...
at least they should have been more honest...MTV juts didn’t like the song nor the video...so they banned it....otherwise let’s ban BS for almost being naked on her videos and hip hop videos for having girls nakes as well and sex scenes...doen’t that schock people’s moral? Well does MTV have really moral? Ummm doubt about it...

My fav video “You Don’t Undestand Me”....Marie left alone in the end, the sad feeling of solitude and the magic images of all those theathrical characters it was almost like a mithological movie ...amazing and beautiful...for a a wonderful song...
Then “Queen Of Rain”....it all seems like a paiting in slow motion Per and Marie on a sort of magic romatic and introspective scenes...Marie at her most beautiful...i love the end Per going away in the horizon...
Worst videos: Salvation and Stars...but i don’t mind seeing them...it’s fun sometimes...

If you want to know where “Anyone” is from... try to find “Dionne Warwick - Anyone who had a heart” on MP3 and listen ... Per was inspired on this song... written by Burt Bacharach for Dionne Warwick.
Anyone who ever loved could look at me
And know that I love you
Anyone who ever dreamed could look at me
and know I dream of you
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me,
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
What am I to do
Every time you go away, I always say
This time it’s goodbye , dear
Loving you the way I do
I take you back, without you I’d die dear
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me,
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
What am I to do
Knowing I love you so
Anyone who had a heart
Would take me in his arms and love me, too
You couldn’t really have a heart and hurt me,
Like you hurt me and be so untrue
Anyone who had a heart would love me too
Anyone who had a hear would take me in his arms and love me too
Why won’t you

“Anyone” is one of the saddest song I’ve ever heard. And the video is absolutly perfect for the song. I love both, specially because in the time when it was release I was in a difficult time of my life.

See, I knew that it sounded older than it is. That’s a perfect example. :)

@Rox_nox2003: Ifeel exacly the same way about the “You Dont Understand Me” video. Iis so sad in the end when Marie is left alone...;(

Welcome toby!
well, as you have to learn (*aham*), mtv are not roxette’s best friends...
the look was allready censored, because marie was sitting on a toillett (fully dressed, of course) and playing the guitar, and there are loads of examples!!!
its really nasty of them to forbid the anyone-video but keep on playing celebrity death match....
if it was for me, i’d rather let people commit suicide than cruelly murder each other...
just my oppinion, of course... :-P

it´s umbelievable there´s Jackass and The Osbornes on MTV all the time and then they ban Rox videos.
Rox_Nox2003 said on July 10, 2003 19:31:
Yeah.....crap on MTV sells so they play it....Osbornes, Hip Hop, Brintey and Justin....at least BSB are gone for now...wish they never come back....but i don’t mind anymore about MTV...Roxette is always on VH-1 so....

Hej TobyNZ
Answering your questions :
* I really think that “Anyone” (both song and video) is boring as hell !! I really don’t like it and I think it was a terrible choice to be 2nd single of Have A Nice Day album.
* I like the suicide idea, it’s at least different into Roxette’s world
* Best videos ever, look for it : Wish I Could Fly (sexy, dark and very cool), Crash! Boom! Bang! (Pure poetry) and A Thing About You (I cry everytime I watch it).
Welcome man !! :) Have fun !! :)
All the best

’Anyone’ is one of my top favourite Rox songs ..... very touching and emotional.... Great video too...I wish Marie would do more acting in their videos.

“Anyone” is my best-ever Roxette recording. I was towards to be dismissed from the Greek army when I saw in the newspaper that Roxette had a new single in the charts called “Wish I could fly”. I could not believe my eyes because at that point I thought that Roxette was history. Then came “that” song. I remember leaning on my bed watching the video, highly rotated on one of our music channels here in Greece. And then the summer of 1999. Wow, what great memories I have of this song and video...
P.S. Did you know that its release was cancelled in England because they thought it was uncommercial? Whaaaaaaaat???? Silly people.

Welcome Toby!
I must say that Anyone is one of my favourite Rox ballads. I like it! Yes, it is very sad and beautiful. I like songs with lot of emotions. It describes the feelings of a broken heart very well. I felt this way many times.
The video? I don’t like it. My favourite video is Fireworks since I’ve seen it. (It was on Friday...)

Hey Toby,
I didnt like this song at first, but now it has sort of grown on me. I think the song sounds better when you are watching the video. I realy like the imagery and colours and Marie is really good at acting depressed! I do not like the suicide/ambulance bit, its too much, and not neccesary.
TobyNZ said on July 14, 2003 01:43:
Thanks all for your messages so far :) - a very productive topic!
Hi Chris - and all others who know me from the ABBAsite (as some may know - I’m a big ABBA fan for past 3/4 years and now only just getting into Roxette). Nice to see you here!
Thanks also for all your welcomes :)
That’s a point also I picked up - does anyone else feel that the suicide/ambulance bit of the video is going a bit too far? I am not sure - I think it is VERY emotional - but is it almost too emotional to bear? Though I love the general mood of it and most of the way Marie acts - sums up my feelings over broken loves I’ve had in the past.
Hmm...just pondering I guess...have a good day. :)

It’s a Beautifully shot video and maire looks fantastic, and I love the intro to the song but it;s not one of my favs.

Grizabella said on July 14, 2003 09:55:
Don’t think the suicide scene is somewhat “going too far”. The lyrics really justify that... and make it a different video. I really like the song and the video (though is not one of my favs), Marie acts amazingly in it.. And i believe the suicide thing isn’t shocking... The treatment is not a bad taste one... Very emotional and poetical, i think.

i LOVE marie’s dress in anyone!!!!!!!
green rules!
@ LoneGunman: what’s so sad about ATAY?
i mean this q seriously, since i maybe just can’t remember it properly...
(i have the dvd but no player....)
coyboyusa said on July 17, 2003 12:01:
as good as the anyone video was i had a different idea for it. t has such a 50’s big band souns with the strings...
i could see it as a love story set in a diner in the 50’s marie in costume where a guy she had a crush on walks away with another but in the end winds up with marie ..
also i like the video inro to the song better with the repeated piano chords
as for the suicide attempt...well i think it was their bid to show peopel hey we’ve grown up...we don’t just make bubblegum music and the whole tone of anyone is very serious
Majdy said on July 17, 2003 14:21:
to me, the video ATAY wasn’t sad at all, but hearing the song still makes me almost cry, the part “lately that’s been very hard to do/you’ve been painting my heart blue was the saddest lyrics ever *sob*sob*

My ’favourite’ Roxette tracks change on a week to week basis, depending what mood i’m in and what i enjoy listening too. However, since 1999, ’Anyone’ has been placed firmly at No.1, there because it is a truly amazing song. The video happens also to be my favourite - WICF is also excellent.
As for the ’Non release’ in the U.K, yes it was a crazy idea...... As i remember, it was song of the week on BBC Radio 2 and was certainly no less commercial than Queen Of Rain, Church Of Your Heart etc etc.
I’m under no illusion - i know it wouldn’t have made top 10, maybe even not top 20 but it would have charted.
Still, we can just put it with that long list of Rox mistakes!!
Lars-Erik_Olson (moderator) said on July 20, 2003 18:26:
I just have to reply to this one... as I have such a strong opinion about this song and the video.
“Anyone” is one of the best Roxette ballads ever... had Roxette been active in the U.S. at the time, I’m certain it could have been a #1 hit (with the promo $ it takes to accomplish that these days). When I first listened to the song... all sorts of beautiful imagery appeared in the music video I created in my head. I envisioned a video that would make the song even MORE appealing.... a video that would resonate with the viewer.
But what we got was a video with a suicide theme. Hardly the kind of theme/video that makes people want to run out to their local record store and buy the album! It was simply awful... Marie contemplating suicide throughout the entire video: jumping of a balcony, getting hit by traffic, drowning. It was a bad concept that should never have been approved, let alone produced.
If you’re still reading responses to this thread you started... let me join the others by saying welcome to TDR.
LittleSpooky said on July 20, 2003 19:52:
Since “Anyone” isn’t exactly the tops of my play lists right now (too painful of a reminder about a good relationship that ended badly), I’ll just join the crew and say: “Hello, welcome to TDR. Check your sanity with your luggage at the gate and Join the Joyride”.
