questions about online communities

Hi Everyone,
As part of my university assessment I am required to write a feature article that’s targeted at a specific type of magazine (I‘m targeting my article at magazines like Rolling Stone). I want to write an article about online communities and the friendships that are formed within them. As such, I need to interview people that visit online communities.
Below are some questions, mainly asking how you feel about online communities and the friendships that are formed in them. So if you’re willing to share a bit about your experiences as a member of an online community please answer the questions below. You can answer them here, or e-mail your answers to me at [email protected]
It would be great if you could include your e-mail address so as my university tutor can verify if need be that my sources are real.
Questions
Please feel free to expand into as much detail as you like in answering these questions.
1. Why do you participate in this online community?
2. What is it about the sense of community that you find here that makes you want to be a part of it?
3. How much time do you spend online as part of this community?
4. Do you consider any people you’ve met in here, as friends?
5. Outside of the main forum topic (Roxette), what sort of things do you share with other people in this community?
6. Do you tend to share more, or less, with people here than you share with your friends offline?
7. Is there a sense of support in this community?
8. Has being part of this community helped you to better understand or accept yourself in any way? How?
9. Do you feel that spending time in online communities makes you withdrawn from ‘real world’ communication? Why/Why Not?
10. Do you feel that friendships that are founded in online communities are any less valuable than friendships founded in the ‘real world’? Why/Why Not?
*edit* Ally77’s answers made me realise, it would also be helpful to my article if I could know peoples ages and where they’re from etc. So here are a couple more questions.
11. Age? (if you are willing to share it)
12. Gender?
13. Location?
14. Have you created an image in your head of what people you are friends with online are like offline?
15. Have you ever met people from the community in an offline environment? How was that experience? Were the people as you had expected etc?
If you have any stories about how online friendships have helped you in any way, or any other stories to do with life in online communities, please feel free to share them with me. I look forward to hearing from you...
Thanks for your time
Brooke

1. Why do you participate in this online community?
- Friendly people, learn new things, help others, and celebrate Roxette. :)
2. What is it about the sense of community that you find here that makes you want to be a part of it?
- We all help each other out when we’re confused. A short while ago I made a webpage on my own site with information concerning questions from the Daily Roxette threads. It helped them a lot.
3. How much time do you spend online as part of this community?
- I come here every day, as if it were my e-mail inbox.
4. Do you consider any people you’ve met in here, as friends?
- I haven’t exchanged e-mails with anyone yet, but a few have joined my MSN group.
5. Outside of the main forum topic (Roxette), what sort of things do you share with other people in this community?
- Mostly stuff I add to my Roxette group on MSN, and random Roxette-related questions and answers.
6. Do you tend to share more, or less, with people here than you share with your friends offline?
- I’m constantly online, so I guess I share more on here than offline.
7. Is there a sense of support in this community?
- Sure is. I’ve learned a few handy things since signing up.
8. Has being part of this community helped you to better understand or accept yourself in any way? How?
- It’s let me know that I can be helpful to people. My recent addition to my Roxette page is one. It felt good knowing others were pleased with it.
9. Do you feel that spending time in online communities makes you withdrawn from ‘real world’ communication? Why/Why Not?
- I don’t spend too long in communities each day, so no.
10. Do you feel that friendships that are founded in online communities are any less valuable than friendships founded in the ‘real world’? Why/Why Not?
- I feel its about equal.
11. Age?
- 22
12. Gender? Male
13. Location?
- Christchurch, New Zealand
14. Have you created an image in your head of what people you are friends with online are like offline?
- Sometimes I have.
15. Have you ever met people from the community in an offline environment? How was that experience? Were the people as you had expected etc?
- Never met anyone from an online community.

Here I answered your questions you posted on THE DAILY ROXETTE........................
http://dailyroxette.com
1. Why do you participate in this online community?
I always am in THE DAILY ROXETTE as I I am a fan and have been for over 12 years, they are a big part of my life and hence I like to chat and talk to others.... I have only been really taking part in it sinice around January 2003 as I finally got internet access at home, before then I only came in now and again..
2. What is it about the sense of community that you find here that makes you want to be a part of it?
We are all friends, or sometimes you get someone who may want to cause trouble in a community and that’s not nice.... we had a spell of that recently, but I missed it....
3. How much time do you spend online as part of this community?
Maybe at least 10 hours a week at THE DAILY ROXETTE
4. Do you consider any people you’ve met in here, as friends?
Yeah some are friends other just people I get to know through there postings... I have also come accross a few people I use to write to years ago with good old fashion pen and paper..
5. Outside of the main forum topic (Roxette), what sort of things do you share with other people in this community?
We have an OFF TOPIC community and everything is talked about there... from being Gay to what TV shows you like.... so many postings from all kinds of people.
6. Do you tend to share more, or less, with people here than you share with your friends offline?
Yeah.... not many friends want to hear about ROXETTE 24/7 + plus I can tell others stuff that I do not want my friends to know about....
7. Is there a sense of support in this community?
Yeah I think so...
8. Has being part of this community helped you to better understand or accept yourself in any way? How?
Not yet but I am working on that.....
9. Do you feel that spending time in online communities makes you withdrawn from ‘real world’ communication? Why/Why Not?
No cause I still see people at work and family everyday and I am always chatting on the phone to my best friend....
10. Do you feel that friendships that are founded in online communities are any less valuable than friendships founded in the ‘real world’? Why/Why Not?
No.... even better when you make plans to meet up and have a holiday!!
