The best song ever done?

I think is “It must have been love”

never is a long time

Per solo: DYWTBMB
Roxette: June Afternoon, SDLHA, or Jefferson

It must have been love and The look

Love is all

Because it’s so different then all the rest

Impossible to choose.

Waiting For The Rain

Guau! How many songs! Maybe because of that Roxette is so big! I think they have more than 100 songs in an excellent level. That is very difficult to do. There´s no group can do that except the beatles. Most of the common people can´t see that.

Neverending love

Waitin´for the rain? Is this a joke?

Harleys and Indians (Riders In The Sky)
Fireworks

Crash! Boom! Bang!, Almost Unreal or It Must Have Been Love

Waiting for the rain

The Beatles suck!

Don’t think so (-;

It went like this.....
Fireworks!

THE LOOK

Most of the songs are from old albums: CBB, Joyride, Look Sharp

Do U think old albums are better?

Liisten to your heart

Nope, Dcantera, in my opinion, Roxette got better over the years, with RS being their best album yet. Yes, all the older albums are amazing, but they are on a winning streak, and Per’s writing is getting more and more powerpop as time goes on, which is ONLY a good thing...

@powerpoplarry: I‘m just asking...

but sorry, powerpoplarry, I think RS is one of the weakest albums.(Would you like to open a new topic?) I like only “The centre...”, “Bringing me down...” and “It takes you no time...”. It‘s logical: very difficult for an artist do the things better and better and better. I think “Look sharp”, “CBB” , “Joyride” , “Tourism” ... are so wonderfull. Per is the best, I love his songs! He has always a beautifull song in his head: “A thing about you” or “Nox” are examples

For me it’s :Spending my time, you don’t understand me,Breathe and lots of other songs

Definitely without a doubt “Watercolours In the Rain”.

@dcantera :

Not it’s not a joke. “Waiting For The Rain”.

@ s-czopek

sorry, my friend ,I respect your opinion. Definitely you are a Marie´s fan. I think “waiting for the rain” is one of the weakest songs. just take a look to Ballad hits or Pop hits. Does it appear?

Crash! Boom! Bang! / Spending My Time / Beautiful Things / She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore

@dcantera, no it doesn’t appear on TBH or TPH, cause it’s a bit too mature to fit in with all those...extremely radio friendly songs.

is very hard... roxette´s one is... so far away (tourism) and home by sheryl crow

@ StillFar

I couldn’t have said that better... This is precisely what I love about “Waiting For The Rain”, “Watercolours In The Rain”, “Crash! Boom! Bang!” : mature souding pop & quite a nice departure from the usual teen pop hits.

@ Dcantera

Could you explain to me how a song that was never released as a single could possibly be included in either “TPH” or “TBH”.. ? They can’t even include all the singles...!

@ s-czopek and Stillfar

Dear friends: I know what you mean, but you don´t understand something: all those amazing pop & ballad pieces you don´t like very much made Roxette succesfull: songs like “the look” or “dressed for success” and almost all songs from TPH or TBH. It´s extremely more difficult for a songwritter to do songs like “the look” or “dangerous” than songs with deep meaning in the words but with poor music. It´s more complex to do catchy music than big words with poor music. That´s the reason because I love Per so much and his music.

@ s-czopek

Do U think the best Roxette´s song comes from Marie? Per is the songwritter

@ s-czopek and stillfar: thank you both. This is an interesting discussion

(do you get) excited?

DCantera, we agree to disagree then because RS, in my opinion, is the closest thing to a perfect powerpop album that Roxette has ever recorded, aside from CBB, not counting TWATG which is better than ALL of Rox’s records. Per rules, and he understands REAL powerpop better than pretty much every artist out there today. It’s a unique songform, easy to understand, difficult to master, and Per is one of the few masters. On RS, you seem to only like the ones that are the furthest AWAY from powerpop. This is proof you don’t understand it or don’t like it, which is strange as that is Per’s forte, NOT ballads!! TCOTH is upbeat, yes, but really more like new-wave synthpop than real powerpop, and the other two you picked are ballads. True, difficult to improve in their songcraft, but Per is accelerating at a delightful speed. ON is more proof. Can’t WAIT for the next solo album, possible GT album, and next ROX album!! I hope it’s dominated by ON-like powerpop, and Per sings all the songs. True, the older albums are great, but RS surpasses them all, in my opinion, except for maybe CBB. ON might be his best song written yet, just a perfect powerpop gem of a song. I know Per is on a constant mission to write the next powerpop jewel, he always has, and great songwriters never stop reaching for the prize. ATAY was great too, kinda like an Aimee Mann song.

Yes I tend to prefer Marie’s songwriting but “C!B!B!” is classy.
I don’t think Marie’s “WCITR” or “WFTR” are deep lyrics with uninspired music. In fact, it’s nearly just the opposite.
Finally, I can admit that it’s “hard” to write songs like “The Look” or other catchy numbers. But seriously “Dressed For Success” ? A hard one to write ?? You take “Wild thing”’s guitar riff, add a slightly different melody and there you go...

oportunity nox, real sugar, HOTBLODED, I REMEMBER YOU

Sleeping in my car

salvation from h.a.n.d. no question about it

Difficult question..... but i think...
Pearls : Soul deep
Looksharp! : LTYH
joyride : FLAF & HOTBLOODED
Tourism : Cinnamon Street
CBB : CBB, PYL & Fireworks
Greatest : June Afternoon
HAND : ITALLT & PTP
RS : TCOTH & ITYNTTGH
TBH : ATAY
TPH : ON & MLTY

@Powerpoplarry.

I see your point. I can realize you‘re closer to classic powerpop from GT or TWATG. I like many songs in there: ” D U wanna be my baby? ” or “Stupid”, I love them, or songs like “Ljudet av ett annat...” “Tuff tuff..”, perfect power pop. Honestly, I didn‘t like very much what I heard in RS because I didn‘t found strong powerpop songs: “Real sugar” , “Jefferson”, “Make my head ...” . I always turn off the player in the middle of the song. In my opinion, They‘re not as good as “Joyride”, or “the look”, or “dressed for success”.

I think you‘re wrong about the ballads. I think Per write ballads as well as pop tunes. But I think ballads are not you‘re style, you‘re powerpoplarry!
But I agree with ON . It‘s a master piece

IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE

@ s-czopek

It‘s no so easy!!! “Dressed for success” is wonderfull, one of the best I heard.

It‘s very difficult for fans to get agree because there‘s marie‘s fans, per‘s fans, roxette‘s fans, GT‘s fans, etc. I respect your opinion, but I think that WCITR or WFTR match perfectly in a Marie‘s solo album

so dificult to choose...

secrets that she keeps / from one heart to another / the look / listen to your heart / dressed for success / it must have been love / spending my time / the rain / crash!boom!bang! / sleeping in my car / it takes you no time / stars / looking for jane /a thing about you ... ETC, ETC...

Certainly, i also think RS was a great album.. one of the best ones.

Hey, Dcantera, cool at least we see on common ground and that you see where I am coming from. Yes, TWATG is possibly THE greatest powerpop album I have ever heard in my life, and actually, I have not heard any GT songs, but cuz it IS Per, I know GT’s tunes are probably genius, as SDLHA is basically GT of the 90s, and I love that song, tis killer!! When I first heard RS, I thought wow, it follows the same path that TWATG did, espesh the songs “Jefferson”, “Fool”, “Looking For Jane”, “Real Sugar”, “Make My Head Go Pop”, and all the songs aimed and hit the pleasure centers in my brain everytime. I find this is the case with RS more than the bigger hits, maybe I find them fresher?? And ON is a continuation down this path, it’s like “Real Sugar” meets DYWTBMB. Don’t get me wrong, the older songs are great, but I feel Per has evolved past that as a songwriter/powerpop tunesmith.

I agree with you about his ballads though, they are well-written too, kinda like an ABBA/Cardigans mixture, very Euro, classy and sophisticated, but yes, I prefer powerpop more, as per my name, LOL!! And maybe it’s a knee jerk reaction to the ballads being bigger hits than Per’s powerpop tunes, maybe that’s it, but Per is in the top echelon of tunesmiths these days, very VERY few have ever gotten close.

@ Powerpoplarry

Yes, I agree. I think Per is the best pop/ballad composer in the history. I love him! Well, I recommend you very strongly to get some GT´s material. I not have all of them, because here, in Argentina is kind of difficult to get it, but there´s an excellent compilation called Hamstad´s parlor 95. You won´t be dissapointed. listen to it and write me your opinion !

SLEEPING IN MY CAR and HOTBLOODED!

Um, Dcantera, I would give you my opinion, but GT’s stuff is not available in the US, and practically all import stores don’t stock GT titles either!! The only solution I have is this one store, Record Runner, they might be able to order all of GT’s stuff, the box set, as they have Marie’s “Antligen” collection, and have lots of Rox stuff, out of print CD singles, etc.

ok guys, who’s singing? Who’s got a goddess voice?
ok, per gessle is the greatest song writer, but Roxette are per, writing songs, for Marie, singing them marvellously, that’s all!
How can you compare their songs??? “Watercolours in the rain”, is “watercolours in the rain”, and “the look” is “the look”!!! every song has his beauty!!

I actually prefer Per’s singing over Marie’s!! It comes down to the songwriting. I prefer the songwriter, aka Per, to sing his own songs, rather than someone else interpret them. Marie is a wonderful singer, but Per’s style is more to my liking. See, Rox is a combo of 2 things: Per performing his own songs and being a songwriter for others, aka Marie, all in the same group!!
